Kansas City, MO

This place, this Kansas City place, is pretty darn cool. Love having CKU's in downtown locations. Love being able to step outside and see something about the city. Love looking out my hotel window and seeing tall buildings and old buildings and the hustle and bustle of urban life.

Speaking of urban, there is a gem store here. Not too far from the hotel - close enough that I have been there twice in the last 24 hours. Urban Arts & Crafts. This store is a must visit. A little bit of scrapbooking, a little bit of paper arts, a little bit fabric (mainly Amy Butler fabric), a little bit beads, and a little bit yarn. Cool stuff that you don't see everywhere. I bought yarn, needles and a book to get me on my way of fulfilling one of my intentions for 2005 (of course I need another hobby). This store is also home of Stephanie McAtee - a super fabulous designer with a very hip, artsy style. Got to pick up some of her cool collage-style papers. Wish I lived here so I could take a class or two from her.

Hanging out today with Elsie and Marianne Madsen who is the Managing Editor at CK. Both have been taking photos for the final night slide show. Both are people I totally enjoy spending time with...

Classes start tomorrow - today people are doing make & takes and attending a mini-class. Lots of happy, friendly faces.

In other news, Sabrina Ward Harrsion updated her website. Lots of inspiration there...and it looks like she has a new book coming out this fall. Love her stuff.

I've been reading your blog for awhile now, but this is the first time I've posted. If you love Urban Arts & Crafts (thanks for pointing out another place I must find in this city! :), you would probably love Florilegium (http://www.florilegium.com/index.htm) in Parkville - it's located between downtown and the airport. And I agree with Chasity, if you like BBQ, you must try some before you leave!
    Hope you enjoy KC...

Great minds think alike -- on Tuesday (first day of school here) I picked up the SAME book, some yarn and some cool wooden needles. I am making the garter stitch scarf -- but I'm using smaller needles and a really cool multi-color fibery yarn. It's so much fun! I'm looking forward to hearing all about your knitting adventures!

Hi, Ali! I just bought Sabrina's book, "Messy Thrilling Life" last night. Can't wait to get that new one! Funny that you posted her link here. I decided I need to break loose a bit with my art, and decided to use Sabrina as my muse.

Welcome to KC...we are thrilled to have you! I am *still* so excited to be a TA on Saturday and cannot imagine how the actual attendees must be feeling! If you like Mexican, there is a place up the street called Los Corales or further up the road, ask at the hotel about Jose Pepper's!

    Hi Ali,
I taught myself how to knit a few weeks ago, I am 31. I always remember my Grandmother sitting with knitting needles and it just looked like she twisted the needles around and around but some how managed to create something.
Anyhow, I LOVE it!! To me it is very relaxing. I have now completed my 5th , yes 5th full scarf! It's crazy, but fun, creative, and relaxing!
    Enjoy!

Wanted to go to CKU-KC so bad, but just not in the budget this year. Probably that it will ever get to me in St. Louis.
    Have fun!!!

How cool you are learning to knit. I taught myself last year and while I enjoyed it, I am a diehard crochet woman. I crochet ten times faster than I knit, but I am not giving up on it entirely. Enjoy KS.

Welcome to Kansas City! I'm glad you found Urban Arts and Crafts. It is truly a wonderful store. If you get back by there, you might check out a book that I bought there several weeks ago. I don't have the name of it here with me at work. But it was written by Stephanie McAtee and another artist. It is wonderful!!!! I can get you the name if you would like if you don't get back there. I assume you could get it on Amazon.com.
Enjoy the rest of your visit! Hopefully you will also have some time to visit some of our local scrapbook stores. We are getting spoiled in KC.
