Father's Day Traditions

Fatherday

Happy Friday & thanks for all the supportive + celebratory comments yesterday.

This Sunday is Father's Day. We don't have any specific plans yet so I was wondering if anyone was interested in sharing their favorite Father's Day traditions? Maybe it is something you do every year or something special you are planning for this Sunday specifically.

I asked Chris what he wanted to do for Father's Day and he said work :) and read.

Don't forget that my first round of Designer Digitals templates and brushes will be released this Sunday (they release new products every Sunday).

We are having breakfast with my parents, taking him to see Kung Fu Panda and then a bbq with his dad. We are lucky that we get to see all of our father's in one day. WE just relax, play video games and eat. I can't think of anything better.

Father's Day is one of those tricky holidays for me because I go to my Mom's to see my stepfather, and I don't usually see my father unless I run around like a crazy person to see them both. So it's always a reminder of the complications of divorce, unfortunately, even as an adult. Thankfully my neice and nephew will take my mind off that when I get to my Mom's. My mom lives on a lake, so we have an early dinner and spend time swimming or boating.
I'm not married and don't have kids, so I don't have to worry about husbands or in-laws, although that might be a perfect excuse to stay home! lol
I can't wait to see the digital stuff you came up with! I'll definitely check the DD website before I leave on Sunday! :)

The last couple of years we have gone to Jamestown Railroad State Park for Father's Day. If you go with your dad, you and your dad ride the train for free. After the ride we get a root beer float. Lots of fun for everyone.

we don't really have any traditions except on mom's day and dad's day we get breakfast in bed and can be lazy all day. this year will be special...my oldest daughter was asked to sing a duet at church. i heard her practice the other night and could not hold back the tears. dad has no idea. so it is going to be a special dad's day for him!

I will make my husband's choice for breakfast (this year he has requested french toast made on homemade cappuccino-carmel bread) with turkey sausage and coffee. Then our son will give him his present ( a Lego for them to build together and play with because they both LOVE Legos- this has become a tradition), followed by time to relax and a BBQ at our house in the evening with my mom, dad and brother(the menu has become a tradition- Rachael Ray honey-lime-cilantro chicken sandwiches served with potato salad, cucumbers and vinegar salad, and a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting that our 6 year old helps me make. OK, so as I look at this our Father's Day tradition centers around food but I don't think my husband or my dad will mind... but most of all it is about spending time together laughing and having fun.

We are heading up our local canyon in the morning for a fire and breakfast... huckleberry pancakes, sausage, and cantaloupe. The kids want to know if we can have s'mores for breakfast too. I'm not so sure :) Afterwards we'll go on a hike. Knock on wood the weather looks perfect here in Utah!

my father-in-law is an amazing man. i had to wait 27 years to get a dad, but i think i've got the best one on the planet! all he ever wants for father's day and his birthday (which are often on the same day) is for his family to be together (i married his oldest of 4). so every year, weather permitting, we have a family outing at a nearby park or beach. he likes to simply roast hot dogs on a stick and eat chips and drink pop (my mother-in-law keeps a pretty close eye on his food intake b/c he has a higher cholesterol number). my father-in-law is truly a blessing to all who know him. oh yeah - and one of his favorite desserts is oreo cookie crumb crust, mint chocolate chip ice cream and then a layer of chocolate fudge sauce, cool whip and chocolate shavings or more crushed oreo cookie crumbs!

Gosh, we usually have girls' time while DH plays soccer in the morning. Then we hang around doing not much of anything (by his choice) then go out to dinner where he wants.
But since he just tore his ACL soccer will NOT be on the agenda this year. I'm planning to make a quiche since he's recently reconciled eating it & being a real man (thank you Paula Dean for the rockin' recipe). Then we'll probably go out to eat and "walk it off" at Best Buy. Sometimes I wish we'd do something more meaningful that we'll all remember years from now but it's how he wants to spend his day. I guess it's pretty nice that our 'everyday' is so good that he choses to spend his own day this way!

The last couple years we've been going to the Cleveland Indians game on Father's Day and play catch on the field afterwards. It's a lot of fun, it's relaxing and we all enjoy a great day together!

We're having a picnic this year--and since it's a billion degrees by about 10 am lately, we're going to have a breakfast picnic. On the National Mall! How's that for a fun idea? : )

Our Father's Day tradition revolves around food. We live in Maryland where crabs are a speciality. My husband loves them. So we usual order a bushel of steamed crabs with Old Bay seasoning on Father's Day. We pick and eat them, have a beer or two, and socialize. It's great fun and yummy too!

Dads try to act like Father's Day is no big deal. Our kids are grown - and it means everything to my husband when they call him. He's their adopted dad but they mean the world to him. I'll be reading the comments because we really should have some traditions around this day. I was working full-time and a full-time college student when my kids were at the age where these traditions should have been gelling for us.

Usually we like to go to a local park or playground, grill out as a family and then play a little softball. Just chill as a family. One year we went to the strawberry patch in the morning and picked some fresh strawberries for angel food cake. They were tasty. Oh so tasty.

I just wanted to share my favorite Father's Day memory with you. My husband and I were married on Father's Day in 1999. My Grandfather walked me down the aisle and gave me away. He was my best friend from the moment I was born and it was such a treat to have him there that day. He passed away exactly six months later. I feel so blessed to have been with him on that Father's Day. It came to mind as I was typing and I just thought I would share it with you.

I feel so blessed to be part of such a cool community here in Virginia Beach - every Father's Day weekend the Dads host an Annual Father's Day Camping Extravaganza in a friend's large backyard. Just kids and Dads - Moms not allowed (we all get together and have dinner at one of our houses). The campout is at a friend's large backyard and it's a veritable tent city!! This year they have 62 Dads and kids pitching tents as we speak -- the Dads set up games to play with kids, build a bonfire and then make breakfast for the kids in the morning. I HIGHLY recommend it as a great way for the kids and Dads to make lifelong memories over Father's Day!

We take Daddy to lunch wherever he wants & he usually gets to choose between a museum visit or the movies. This year my husband has chosen the movies. We will go to lunch & then to see the new "Indy" movie.
My kids & I just finished his present. We have been working on a little 6x6 post bound album. The kids (7 & 10 years) did their own pages & I did some myself. My son chose to draw on his & write little cartoons & stories. My daughter is more the traditional scrapbooker!! I know he'll love it.

The boys and I usually make him breakfast in bed. While he is eating breakfast, they like to hand him the presents and cards. My husband loves to be fussed over and for a month before Father's Day, he starts hinting around about what are the plans for him.
My husband is a huge baseball fan. I found out that the Orioles were playing the Pirates (his favorite team) on Father's Day. So I bought tickets for all of us to go. He will be shocked that I bought a ticket for myself. I hate to go to pro baseball games (too low for me). But it will mean everything to him that we will be going as a family. He loves his family and his children. When I was pregnant, the day we found out that I was expecting twins, he said "I want a pitcher and a catcher". It didn't matter if they were boys or girls, he was determined he was getting from God, a pitcher and a catcher. The boys are now, twelve and he got what he wished for.
I enjoyed reading everyone's comments. Tamara's comment about her father-in-law brought tears to my eyes. Thanks so much for asking us to share our plans.

I miss my father very much, so this is always a hard time of year for me. (he passed away 6 years ago when I was 22). I know he wouldn't want us to dwell though, so we will drop of some flowers at the cemetary and then go about our business.

Usually every year we make a special breakfast (and this year my DS who's 5 can help!) and give him his cards and/or gifts that we made or bought him.
He gets to pick how he spends the day, it's usually spent with just the three of us hanging around the house or taking the boat out and spending it out on the water.
This year he didn't really want anything, so i am "forcing" him to head over to his poppy's house who he hasn't seen since Easter and he's been meaning to get out there but with his job being hectic lately he hasn't had any time. I've got his dad and mom meeting us there, so we'll all spend a nice afternoon eating some hotdogs and burgers with the 4 generations!
When he found out my plan he couldn't have been more happier!

We'll be planning our Father's day traditions this year and will be able to truly celebrate, without regrets, for the first time. After ten years of waiting we finally have pictures of our daughter and hope to head to China next month to meet her!
May I also just comment at this time that the worst quote ever is:
'Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a daddy....'
    Not always true unfortunately...
