Coburg Antique Fair

A great group of ladies gathered in the wee dark hours of the morning yesterday to scope out the best finds at the annual Coburg Antique Fair. It was literally still dark when we all met (6am) and started out on our adventure (good thing many of the booths had lamps). This is one of my favorite events of the year - tons of tons of crazy booths with treasures just waiting to be found.

Here we are about 9:30am, as it was starting to get hot, sharing our finds:

Group

I definitely gathered a few things that just had to come home with me:

Desktop1

A yellow baby scale, a small globe with the planets listed on the base, an Oregon Statesman paper tin for Chris' office, a small white cup...

Find2

A group of chenille blankets to add some texture to the baby's room, a great little brown sweater for the little one, and my most favorite find of the day:

Find3

A bay of lockers that I am going to repaint and use in my new office space. I love this. Thanks Jill for hauling this one home for me. Anyone have any tips for what kind of paint/the best way to paint metal? Edited: just to clarify I am not painting these myself while I am pregnant.

Following an afternoon nap Chris and I took a couple more steps in moving things around in the house. The shelves were unmounted from the wall in his office and moved out into the living room (and remounted). It was a ton of books to move but needed to be done it order for other things to start switching rooms. One step at a time.

take it to a place near you that does powder coating. it will give you the longest lasting results. they may even come pick it up so you don't have to haul it again.
if you tell them you don't mind if it has imperfections (because I think that would give it more of a unique look), they may give you a better deal!

Ali, Love the Lockers, thats going to look awesome in your new office. What colour are you going to paint them? Red/Apple Green? I have a metal file draws to paint as well. I've had it for 3 years now and still haven't painted yet. Maybe I should get to that before winter. Let me know what paint works the best :)

The best way I know to deal with metal is to take it to a local body shop and have them sand blast it to get it down to the metal. You can usually get them to paint it too, and a good coat of auto paint is more durable than anything you can do at home.

I used Rustoleum spray paint on a tall metal filing cabinet I purchased and have had no problems with chipping or flaking. It did take a lot of cans though (3 cans for a 4 drawer cabinet). I wish I had known they offered roll-on paint at the time, it would have been easier to get even coverage.

I would use Valspar anti rust or Rustoleum, I have used both and have had no problems. I love the newspaper tin, those are so cool (especially when you find one with a fitting name).

So jealous of your cool lockers. Here's how you can paint that bad boy.
Remove general soil and grit with detergent and water. With steel wool, or sandpaper, or wire brush, remove all loose, peeled paint and rust. Wipe surface using cloth dampened with white vinegar.
First coat should be a "metal primer" or "rust retardant" type paint. Second coat can be of enamel. When painted surface is completely dry apply protective finish. I used a spray can of sealant found in any hardware store and it works great.
    HOPE THAT HELPS!

Awesome finds. I just love fleamarkets too. As for painting the lockers. I would suggest an autobody shop. I got an old safe some years back and took it to one. They sand blasted it and then painted. It turned out so nice and the paint it so durable as aposed to just the regular spray paints etc. you get at the do it yourself type stores. Hope this helps.

Great finds! I have a scale like that just for my little one on the way, my husband was weighed in it and I can't wait to use it on my little babe. Oh I like the idea above me to take it to an autobody shop, since you can't do much spray painting anyway that might be just the thing!

I have no idea why I had bookmarked this tutorial since the odds of me ever painting a metal file cabinet were slim to none, but I must have been saving it for you! Here's how to do it: http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com/2008/01/how-to-paint-file-cabinet.html
Glad you had such a fun time with your friends. Is it wrong that I tried to see if you had a baby-bump in your photo? :) Hope you're feeling well.

Congrats on the great find! I've been using metal lockers in my office/scraproom for years now. I love them! They were a great way to keep the room open while keeping little fingers away from my stuff!

Great haul! and what a fun day!
I was going to suggest taking to a body shop and having them powder paint it.....it will last forever and the surface will not scratch like some spray paints do.
Cannot wait to see it finished!!!

love the lockers, we have the real full size ones in our mud room for each of our gang; less than I thought at lockers.com PLUS I got to order name plates for each one that go where the numbers go! See if you can get them for yours to mark what goes inside each one. They were like $2 each? cheap!
Go with the auto body shop to paint these, not something you want to do more than once!

I would sure inquire about whether or not it would be safe to paint while you are pregnant. Those paints may have toxins. Love your finds.

    GREAT finds!!!
I'd use rustoleum for the metal - but agree that the fumes may not be healthy. perhaps a friend could do it for you? TFS!!
