Cave

We spent some time this past weekend in central Oregon.

On Saturday Chris & Simon did some serious adventuring down into a lava cave (Boyd Cave - they are actually lava tubes). Not being a fan of dark, cold enclosed spaces I decided to pass on this one and sent them on their way.

They had a great time. Simon loved it (he also loved that he got to pick out a new flashlight to bring home). Chris loved it because Simon loved it. I think they would have even spent more time down there if they would have had more gear (helmets, gloves, etc.).

Cave2
I'm thinking this shot underground would be a perfect home for writing the story of their adventure.

Above

And I'm looking forward to doing a layout that juxtaposes an above ground shot and a below ground shot. I love how Chris captured the scene (vs. just a close up of Simon's face) in all three of these photos.

We went there as a family about 3 years ago, brings back some great memories. Such fun! We hiked about a mile in. Glad they enjoyed, and fun pics for momma to scrap!

Great idea with the journaling on the photo! I have a bunch of these photos from our lava tube adventures in Central Oregon this summer! Hadn't thought of that! Thanks!

My husband and son love going through the uncharted caves in Missouri. They sometimes have to lay down and wiggle through tight spots. Thanks very much, but I will pass! Our son is 13 now and it is still something he loves to do with his dad. I have them both trained to take pics and they do a great job.

Oh wow! What a fun adventure! I would definitely be passing too though, have you seen "The Descent?" LOL! I am way too freaked out to go into any cavernous space anymore!

Lately it seems very popular to get the super tight, close-up shots of kids faces, forgetting that the surroundings can make for an equally impressive photo. I appreciate that you continue to remind us that gettng the close-ups AND the landscape photoshelp to tell the most complete story. Thanks!!! p.s. Your Y&T class continues to be exciting and interesting every single week. Good work!

I think Chris has a new calling! I LOVE the "flashlight" shot. Such a great picture. Looks like a fun trip, but I am with you Ali! Above ground is best :)

Lava tubes are not a favorite of mine. We visited these very tubes and while my husband was amazed I was not. This is a spur of the moment stop as we were passing through the area and we only had a little Mag lite. My husband wanted to follow a bunch of school kids touring so he could listen to the teacher and walk in the glow of their lights!

Oooh fun fun fun! I want to go now---such a cool adventure, and so do-able! A good reason to travel east, out of the Willamette valley... might have to try this soon! Great series of pics Chris captured---you'll have fun scrapping these it sounds like with your ideas already pouring out!

I ventured into the lava tubes in Flagstaff, AZ and it was one of the scariest, hardest things I've ever had to do! I'm with you, Ali - I'm not a big fan of the dark enclosed spaces. Plus in Flagstaff there are no stairs to get in and out of it - just HUGE boulders! I shiver just thinking about it! lol

I'm always amazed at how cold it is down there! Last caves I visted were those in Southern Oregon and also in Idaho on the way to Craters of the Moon.

Glad they had a good adventure--but I am with you--always stay above ground if at all possible!! My girls loved going into the caves with Dad--it just perfect for Mom to stay back and "protect" all of the the stuff! :)

How fun... we used to do that when I was kid. My mom always felt the same way as you! I remember my dad would always have us turn OFF our flashlights to see how absolutely dark it is down there.

It sure does look like fun! I can't wait til my hubby is finished with uni for the year as he has had NO time to spend with us lately. He's really missing out on the fun things we do and how special it is just to do the everyday things with our little man. Hopefully closer to Christmas we can embark on a few adventures like this one!
