December Daily 2009 : Day 16

DAY SIXTEEN

16_DD_Both
Can anyone else believe how fast this holiday season is moving along? Simon and I were laying on his bed the other night, looking at his tree lights and talking about how there are only 8 more days until Santa comes...and only two more days of school. Man I remember how exciting that was as a kid. Nothing better

The last couple of nights we have been reading some of the short stories from this book: Jan Brett's Christmas Treasury. It is such a fantastic book with amazing illustrations. I ordered it in 2007 after reading a recommendation from Amanda at Soule Mama. She has a great, timeless list of winter reading favorites here. Having these books that only come out once a year (along with the holiday movies) makes them that much more special.

Here's a look at Day 16:

The transparent clock (old Heidi Swapp product - not sure it is available anymore) page is one that I have done for the last three years. This is a good example of one of those products that I do stock-up on - when I have the desire to use it more than once and it is generic enough, I will buy a few to be able to use them in the future. I think this is the last one I have in my stash. I love the contrast of the curve with the rest of the straight edge pages. This year I took a shot of Simon's room and am using that for my story on Day 16.

On the back of the clock I included an image of the Playmobil Nativity Set
that is sitting on his bookshelf:

Here's a close-up look at the image which includes a couple digital products from Designer Digitals: AE Handdrawn Holiday, Katie's Word Strip Labels No.2 (coming soon), and Holiday Twill (coming this weekend to the shop).

On the image of Simon's room I added the word stack from my Handdrawn Holiday collection.

Look for some fun new giveaways to be posted tomorrow morning. Have a wonderful weekend!

We too have Jan Brett's books but they are the small individual hardback's stories. Love the illustrations also. They are some of our favorite to look at from our stack of Christmas books.
I also pulled out my Heidi Swapp clock this year and used it as you did in my DD album. Never pass up an opportunity to use a good idea I always say.

I love that Simon has is own little tree and decorations in his room. I had one too as a kid and it is one of my most treasured memories growing up.

    I like that word-stack idea!
I have a question. What do you do when Simon wrote or drew something you want to save but it's in pencil? My kids do that all the time...they're drawers and writers and I often find stuff I definitely want to keep, but I know the pencil is going to fade quickly.
For yesterday's page I want to save their xmas wish lists, which are HILARIOUS, but again, they surprised me with them--and they're in pencil.
I'm thinking about scanning and reprinting but I like the originals. Maybe I'll keep both copies? Anyway, I'm curious to know what you do in that situation.

We love Jan Brett here - dd actually wrote to Jan Brett to tell her that she was DD's favourite author and got a reply. How fun to have the treasury, we have individual stories in paperback mostly.

Thank you for great and inspiring pages. I have a Dec. Daily question....
How do you stay on top of uploading/editing/printing pictures each day? That's what I'm finding to be the hardest...even though I'm all digital....My base pages are done, and I'm changing them very little. And I have a page in my planner/calendar where I have written each date and planned out what is going on each day (at least the ones I know in advance) and I'll jot down journaling ideas/prompts on that planner page. So I end up doing 2 or 3 pages at a time, but I feel like that's not "Daily" Any ideas?

With the Santa letters I have been keeping two copies - the one I add to the album and the "real" one. The real ones are stored in a special safe-keeping place. In reality I could probably let those go...but will likely hang onto them and maybe make something with them all together down the road.
If Simon's were done in pencil I would definitely scan them in just because pencils definitely fade over time (I have some handwritten stuff from my grandma that is really hard to see).

Hi Sarah - in past years I have actually been better about "keeping up" each day. This year, things are busier so I have just been getting to it when I can - that means doing a couple days at once. My "perspective" is that no one will know the difference down the road - and it's so not a big deal if you aren't actually doing them "daily." The idea is to capture the season - the organizational format is daily (vs. something like an organizational format of traditions) but it definitely does not mean you must do it everyday ;). It's all good :).

My 4th grader just told me about Jan Brett last night. At her website (janbrett.com), click on "videos" and there are lots of videos of her talking about her books, teaching you how to draw a polar bear, and making a gingerbread baby for her book "Gingerbread Baby". Awesome!
