December Daily 2009 : Day 18, Day 19

DAY EIGHTEEN

18_DD_1

One of Simon's favorite days at school happened last Friday: PJ's and a movie. I tucked the handout inside the page protector for Day 18.

On the back I adhered a piece of left-over wrapping paper I am using this year and the inside of a card that Simon brought home from school. Machine stitching goes around the outside edge. Letter stickers from Little Yellow Bicycle.

The back of the day before (Day 17) looks like this:

DAY NINETEEN

On Saturday we finally got our tree. It was a great little adventure. The biggest memory of the day is that Simon picked out the tree all by himself, insisting this was it

For this day I wanted to include a few more photos so I created a fold-out section and added it on to the original background. Here's the spread open to the inside (each panel holds a 5.5 inch x 8 inch photo):

Here's a few scans of the inside panels:

And to the other side (missing the last photo because my printer ran out of ink):

The journaling documents our adventure selecting the tree and then the process of decorating. The cute little red accent is from Pixie Petals. The word stickers are old Wordfetti from Making Memories.

Great page again...i'm realizing that this DD thing just doesn't work for me...failed last year and am failing again this year. Boo! I so want to finish it but just never have the time, energy or pictures...

My girls' favourite day is pajama day at school too. They did that on Friday and the whole school watched the Grinch movie in the gym. (whole school = just over 100 kids). They also went skating as a couple of big groups - the arena is right close to the school.
    Ahhh happy times.

I gave up on my DD, too. I've taken photos each day and jotted notes but nothing actually got in the album after the first week. And to top it off, this week's blizzard had a major effect on my priorities. Hoping to scrap it all up after the holidays.

Nothing wrong with putting it together later on - definitely not something you have to work on "daily." It should not be a stress :).

this layout is my favorite so far. it is just beautiful how you did the fold out, so much story to tell in one family tradition. how fun. it's really precious.

Have you considered just jotting down thoughts at the end of the day vs. feeling like you have to make something or take photos every day? What about using your blog? The posts you have on their could be printed and put into a book that talks about your life during this time of year...

Wow. What a treasure!!!!!! I was reading all the posts above and couldn't help agree with you more. I plan on doing my little book after Christmas. I have been keeping notes and using my blog. I do hope others don't give up. It is such a wonderful project!!! And I am so ok with waiting until after the hustle and bustle:)

Did you put your camera on a continuous timer to capture the photos for this day? Do you have any tips for doing this? I've never used the continuous timer on my Nikon D40 for anything other that a sitting family portrait. Do you have any tips?

Merry Christmas Ali! I've been keeping up with your DD pages and am keeping up with mine as well although I am a couple of days behind with the layouts....I do have the photos and the stories, just not all in one place yet! But no stress....it will all be done by the end of the year and I'm loving the process! I do have a question for you though...although it may be simple, it just does not seem obvious to me how you created the fold-out section. Is it one piece of cardstock that is just folded? or is it smaller pieces "hinged" together somehow? I love the look and definitely would like to incorporate a similar section in my album....Thanks in advance for your help!

I have been writing things down on post-its at the end of the day. If I happen to take a picture, then I have been using digital templates to help take the design pressure off. So far, I have printed and added my journal. The ONLY embellishment I have on my pages are your December numbers. HA!

Hi Dana - I took two 8.5x11 sheets of cardstock and fold each in half. Then I used some of the 7gypsies gaffer tape to tape the one end of each page together (so you have one long continuous piece). Next I trimmed the whole thing to be the correct height (8 inches vs. 8.5).

The bigger sized pics look great. I tend to print just 4 x6 or 2 x 3, but am rethinking about some enlargements. Hooray for you getting yourself in the pics this time!

I've been a few days behind since the beginning, but I vow to finish (unlike last year). I'm traveling now, so I'm just trying to keep notes. It heartens me to know I'm not the only one behind (even Ali this year!). I have a 7 and nearly 4-year-old, and I'm seven months pregnant, so I'm just plain old pooped!
Thanks for all the great inspiration!

Ali...I've never really made such a comment but I just feel very moved to thank you for your generous spirit! I took you YT class (um...which I'm still working on...) & you were present & patient & generous with your posts, you replies, your explanations... And here you are being the same way with today's comments. I so wanted to ask about the pull-out for your extra photos & you've already answered that in a previous post. Again, I know to some extent "this" is what you do--in a sense part of your "job" but really your spirit just comes through! With all the busy things happening I just wanna thank you for taking the time to explain that fold out for the photos! I appreciate your kindness & generosity! :)

Keeping up with your DD album can be tedious. All fun and joy, but sometimes, in the moment, I feel pressure. But, once I sit down and start playing, and creating, and remembering I seem to feel a calm come over me. I say that I'm doing this for my family, but I"m doing it for me, too. I love telling stories and taking the photos. And, with three kids, and the baking, and the housework, and the other stuff that comes with the season...I make a commitment to do this. And, I have to say that since I've learned to post to the flickr group this year, the awesome comments from other creative people fuels my fire. It's one thing for family to like it, but for another crafty soul to like it, too...now that's an accomplishment. SO, HAVE FUN AND DON'T FEEL THE PRESSURE...THERE'S ALWAYS NEXT YEAR. You could even pick a random month and do a "March" Daily and document that. You'd be surprised about all the wonderful things that happen in your family during other months of the year...and they might not be as busy for you.

No stress allowed! Last year I didn't even have my supplies until January, and I may not have had a picture from every day on THAT day, but it still documented the season and was beautiful, and I enjoyed the process and the end result _immensely_. Hands down the favorite album I've ever made - THANK YOU for the inspiration! This year I got the base done, and then immediately got sidetracked by life, but I am looking forward to working on things in Jan again when it's a little calmer. Maybe not a December Daily, exactly, but still fun! Winter's Tales? December Stories? =] Happy holidays, for sure. Thanks for taking the time from your holidays to share your album - it's lovely and makes me feel happy and warm to see it and the fun your family is having with their December.

hi ali! i'm kinda liking that you are only posting pages every couple days: i actually manage to get mostly caught up with you that way! have a quick question: is the background red swirl on page 19 a tranparency, stamp, patterned paper? it looks great, but not sure what type of medium you used. love the idea of a fold out. i've had a day or where just including one photo didnt' seem to be telling enough of the story of that day. love this idea!
    merry christmas!
