December Daily 2009 : Days Four, Five, & Six

One of my observations this year is that life seems to be just a tad-bit busier than in the past. Adding another little person into the mix makes things more full, more wonderful, and more complicated all in the same instant. It is so, so fun to see her face in this album.

DAY FOUR

Here's a scan:

04_DD_2
SUPPLIES : AE Handdrawn Holiday Word Art; Prima Glittered Star Vine (I just pulled them off and stapled them to the top of the page protector); Fiskars Scallop Border Punch

Here's what I did on the back:

04_DD_Back

I adhered a sheet from a magazine (I think it was Martha) to the back of the photo. On top of the santas I included a handwritten memory of how when I was a kid during December when we would drive around at night I always looked out the window up in the sky to see if I could see Santa. Even when I knew...

Here's the before shot:

DAY FIVE

05_DD_1

SUPPLIES :
AE 25 Days of December Overlay; K&Company Gold Embossed Pattern Paper (I found this at Michael's a few months ago); Gold foil from a Jenni Bowlin kit

Day Five pretty much talks about how I worked all day on Saturday and how much I am looking forward to transforming our home for the holidays.

Here's the original:

DAY SIX

06_DD_2

Chris just came in here and looked at this photo and said, "this is so them."

For the main page I adhered the large photo onto the tabbed kraft page (see the "before" image below) and used a craft knife to trim the excess along the edge. Before printing the enlarged photo I added the word art and cut ups and after printing I added the white line, the #6, and one more word sticker.

The strip of photos on the opposite page was gathered together in Photoshop using Katie's Photobooth Frames

Here's a close-up on the second page:

DD_6_1SUPPLIES Katie Pertiet Photobooth FramesAE Handdrawn Holiday Word Art; Katie Pertiet Christmas Cut-Ups; Old Making Memories Wordfetti Stickers; American Crafts Foam Letter Stickers; Sharpie Poster Paint White Pen (not sure if this is being made any more)

Day7

How's it going? Did you play catch-up this weekend? Enjoying the process?

I've been jotting down memories of the day and taking photos (on some days), not entirely sure how to get started with putting it together as I didn't create a base album in advance but oh so glad to be recording this season.

I'm checking your blog for updates every spare second I have, and even when I don't have a spare one too. Your pages are really inspiring me at the moment.
I tried to do a photo/digital text combination the other day and I only found out it failed once I got my photos back from the lab. I'm about to attack it again as I feel that incorporating text in my photos as you have is a great skill!
I missed if you replied to the question the other day about printing your photos at home. Are home printers and ink these days good enough for archiving? Will the photos fade? Is it best to stick to a lab if you want your images to last the test of time?

Your pages look great!!! I'm enjoying this project so much. I forget to take a picture some days but I'm journaling each night. I am happy with it so far. I also don't want to print at home due to some printer issues right now so I'm uploading pics once a week and getting them done locally. Thank you, thank you for inspiring me so much. I just finished reading "Life Artist" after buying it at scrapbook store last week. I love it! I made a huge list with tons of ideas for layouts and projects. This December Daily thing is outside my comfort zone so it's been good for me to think outside the box and PLAY! You rock!

Even though I don't do a DD album myself, I like seeing all this hybrid stuff. I really like that big picture in tab-shape. I wil keep this in mind for when I make my own dayplanner.

    Hi
I wanted to share my Decemebr daily album with you. First of all, I have never done a mini album or a daily album so all of this is pretty new to me. It sounded like a grand idea and I was slow in deciding whether this is really what I wanted to do. I am in the mids of catching up with a very long holiday with LOTS of photos. I did not want another project, but it also sounded really nice to do something in the moment and recent and not trying to remeber what I did more than a year ago.
Asd a compromise I decided to do this very low stress, low impact, low work. I used one of these small albums one used to get sometimes when you developed film (in the old days). it fits one photo. And it has 24 pages. My idea is to capture the significant Christmas memories, one photo or one journalling card per page for December. Since I do not have a page for each day, I am not allowed to use more than one page per day (not able to add pages as you are). I also do not have to scrap a day where nothing happens.
I live in the Southern hemisphere, so for us this time of years is also the end of the year, the end of the school year, with school christmas concerts, last day of school, work end of year party, etc. etc. The album is thus meant to capture all these one of a kind things that make December the busy end of year season as well as Christmas. Some of these happened in November, and I also included them. I also included a 'To Do' list for December, and a mini calendar highlighting how busy everything is.
I love this. It is nice to scrap in the moment and it is nice to have to reduce the school concert to ONE photo. (I tend to use them all).
For Christmassy things, I included the advent calender, our Carol service and plan to include when we put up the tree (have not done that yet), the memories connected to the Christmas decorations, the gifts, the actual Christmas day and Christmas eve. The rest would pretty much be the end of year stuff.
And I made real mincemeat christmas pies yesteray (I usually buy the). I took a photo and if I am short a page or two in the end this would also get a page.
I guess the biggest difference with your album is the lack of space I have. I will thus not include any 'normal day to day' things. And since we are so busy with year end things, I definately will have 22 main things happening between November, December and New Years day.
Thank you for inspiring me. Even if my end product will look soo much different from yours. I will not post pictures, since it is not that pretty (you cannot do that much with one photo only.) The coolness is more in the concept (which I hope I captured, than in the actual look)

I am working on my album every spare second I have. This year the DD album is extra special because my husband is deployed. Now when he comes home he can look at the album and see what we have done.

I'm actually doing great. This is my first DD and I was afraid of not being able to keep up with it since I got CFS. But I found myself looking forward to putting the kids to bed each night and then sit down with the DD. And I'm so happy that a while back I went through you Tuesday Tutorials and came across Cathy Zielske's awsome videotutorial. After that I've looked at her other vidoetutorials and I've learnt so much when it comes to using PSE, that I didn't do before. And I've been using what I've learnt in this DD and I'm just so happy with the way it looks. So thank you Ali for such an informative, inspiring and fun blog!

Well, I DID play catch-up this weekend, how did you know? However, I'm moving on and as I have all my pictures ready, I might even do three pages (last week's backlog) tonight!

Love how your album is taking shape, Ali! And Anna looks oh-so-cute in that bonnet.
Yes, I had a catch-up day yesterday and completed days 3-6. Now that there are a few finished pages to leaf through, I can see it coming together and am enjoying the process.
Like you said earlier, on some days you might not create a great page but that page will still work within the album as a whole so don't get stressed!

    Hi Brooke,
I have used a dedicated photo printer (http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Printers/Direct_Photo/Selphy_ES1/index.asp) at home for the last 1.5 years, and no longer use a photo processing lab.
Although, it might work out a little more expensive per print, it's so worth it for the improved quality (the photo paper is nice and thick with a even not-too-shiny finish) and the convenience of being able to print instantly.
I am able to edit photos to include text or overlays (like Ali's 25 Days of December) and my little printer copes just fine.
I haven't experiences any fading or loss of quality with these prints.
    I would highly recommend one!
    Hope this helps.
    Lana

I didn't decide till the Thanksgiving weekend that I would do this and then I decided I would set myself up for failure if I made all the pages from scratch. So I purchased an 8x8 album and am using that. There is something so deeply satisfying about completing a photo and journal page each day. Thanks for your continued inspiration.

    Brooke,
I just took a "taking better pictures" class at our local community center and came away with two points that made a big impression. One was...if it isn't printed, it doesn't exist...meaning anything could happen to your camera, computer, disc, etc., so don't wait to print your pictures. AND...always ask where you print your photos whether they "print" or "process"...only "processed" photos are guaranteed to last more than 50 years. Since we all want our children/grandchildren to enjoy these December Dailies I have decided to opt for processing the photos.

One of the best things I've learned from you, Ali, is that it's okay to go with the ebbs and flows. I'm feeling the goodness, but mostly doing the pages on the weekend. Snapping photos and jotting a few notes to myself and being perfectly okay with that...then putting it all together at the end of the work week. And definitely enjoying the Yesterday/Today class. Have a lovely day!

    Loving your album, Ali!!
I have a question though. I'm getting a bit frustrated with the 25 Days Digital Overlays. I watched your tutorial and have tried to drag the overlay off the page before dragging it to make it bigger but try as I might the words look hopelessly warped. What am I doing wrong? Thanks. Heather

I'm only caught up through Dec. 2. But the wonderful thing about having this project on the back burner all month is that I am remembering to take photos of the things we do. And I've made a few layouts. That's big progress for me!

This past weekend I bought 3 sheets of 9 pocket & 3 sheets of 6 pocket plastic sheets at a Card/Coin shop in a mall. Michaels suggested I go there. He only charged me $1.00 for the 6 sheets. Can't wait to try them. I love how you used them in your album.

Ali,, I seriously in awe that you are getting this done. Life is SOOOO budy in December at best, and with a new little person, just crazy. Love how you're putting it all together. I attempted to play catch up this weekend, but I am hitting endless hurdles - my camera is broken, I have a herniated disc in my back, husband away so alone with 2 kids...and on and on it goes. I'm tryiung to journal at least everyday, and put the pages together when I can. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love your pages, Ali. Great photos.
I still need to do a little catching up. I'm finding it hard to get around to printing and completing those pages, although I do have some done for the month. I want to take a freeze-frame from my husband's video camera from the first day and I'm waiting on him to change the shot to a printable version for me, so that first day isn't quite complete yet.
I had one evening where we had friends over and I made a beautiful pineapple upside down cake. I waited all day to take an evening photo for that page. And then my friends came and I got all caught up in the moment (which is good) and forgot to shoot a photo. :(
So, I'm having fun with it, but I'm finding it hard to do.

I am a little behind since I don't print photos at home, but I am loving the process. I still find myself trying to make each page "perfect" but then I remind myself to just go with the flow like you do! Your album looks great!
One question......If you punch holes in pictures to add in with certain day, do you put those in front of the number page or after it???? I can't get the photos on my actual number page but I want to make sure it's clear which day they go with.
    Thank you!

Totally enjoying the process and I am thankful that it does not feel like a 'chore'-I find myself thinking throughout the day what to write about or taking pictures of my day hoping one will spark a memory or inspire me enough to make it part of my daily december album. Loving seeing your pages!
