One Little Word 2010

I am a fan of welcoming the new year with open arms. I love fresh starts, new opportunities, clean slates, possibilities.

Back in January 2007, as a way to celebrate these beginnings, I started a public tradition of choosing a single word to focus on over the course of the year.

Many of you are familiar with this tradition and have been joining me in selecting a new word each year. If this is your first time reading about the idea of one little word I recommend taking a few minutes to read my original post here.

Here's a look at my words from the past three years with links to the original posts.

2007 : Peace [ read my post for 2007 ]
2008 : Vitality [ read my post for 2008 ]
2009 : Nurture [ read my post for 2009 ]

Essentially the idea is to choose a word (or let it choose you) that has the potential to make an impact on your life.

Maybe you want to invite something or maybe you are hoping to subtract something. Maybe your word will be practical or hopeful or creative or fanciful. Maybe you need a big word, something in-your-face that will challenge you everyday. Maybe you need something smaller and quieter that will whisper gentle tidings as you make your way throughout the year.

Whatever word you end up with, make sure it is your word (not your sister's, mom's, partner's, child's, etc). You can share it publicly or keep it close to your heart.

My word for 2010 is STORY.

I'm planning to do a post with more details on my thoughts about this word on Wednesday (look for the finishing pages of my December Daily tomorrow). I am hoping to use my word as a springboard for a variety of different projects and inspirations, in my life and my scrapbooking, over the next 365 days.

Have you chosen your word yet?

I love that your word is STORY. I think it is a great approach to a new year, to dive in head first and look for all the bits to carry with you through the year, through your life, good & bad, to make your own story. I love it!
This year, my word is BALANCE. I would like to find a bit more in my life. It's funny how quickly the scales tip when you have so much going on, 4 children, 3 under the age of 3! And a house to maintain, a business in it's start-up phase, a new home, a new town, a lot of change... so BALANCE. I'd like to bring a bit more of it into my daily life, stir it together with the joys that are already there, and help bring out the true flavour and richness of it all!

I believe my 2010 word will be CONTENTMENT. It's something I have been struggling with in this past year in many areas of my life. Way past time to be still, to be content, not always wishing and hoping for more. Because, when I look in the faces of those I love, I am reminded that I already have it all.
    Contentment.

EXPERIENCE. I'm done with STUFF, as in I've shedding my attachment to it and want instead to focus my energies towards experiencing life. At the same time, I'd like to document those experiences with thoughtful and intentional journaling and photographs.

I, too, loved reading so many words for 2010! I've been thinking about my word for some time now and I think I'm going with DISCOVERY. I've let some things go that I need to reDISCOVER and I need reflect and discover why I am the way I am about so many things. I want 2010 to be a year of discovery: about myself, about my family, about my community...about things I don't even realize I need to discover.

My word is blossom. I am terribly shy but love to cautiously explore different artistic mediums. This year, I'd like to remind myself it's OK to grow, it's OK to blossom.

My word is "Sooner". Every aspect of life can get better when you take a step "sooner". Love your tradition of ONE word. We were doing this on LinkedIn last year and got a great discussion going.

I like this idea. My word is COURAGE. I am so often fearful. Having to face life changes because of a disability has been scary. I was struggling to have a normal life and only now that I am away from work can I see how I was destroying myself trying to pretend I had no problem. Now, I'm not working and face new fears with that situation. So, I'm going for courage. I thought of hope, peace and love for my word. All are wonderful words but not for this year. I do like the eastern philosophy that says courage is derived from love. That should keep the balance avoiding the lack (cowardice) and the excess (recklessness) to strive for the ideal of the virtue.
Thanks, Ali, for this idea. I like having MY word for the year. Wonderful concept!

I've read about your one little word for the last 3 years but have never participated.
2010 is a big year for us - our first year as a family of 3, and I've decided that I must participate. My word goes along well with yours - Document. I want to document my baby's first year, to treasure this time of learning (for all of us), to document her growth and really enjoy this time as a new mom.
To do this, I've purchased Becky Higgins' Project Life kit and am really looking forward to getting started documenting our first year together. Thanks for the inspiration Ali!

It is with anxiety and resolve that I type this word...(I know, that was slightly paradoxal)my word is . It encompasses all that is needed at this time in my life. Thanks for challenging us readers to slow down and define our moment.

    My word chose me: EMBRACE.
"The remarkable thing is, we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will EMBRACE for that day."
I am choosing to EMBRACE life and all the nasty, wonderful, humorous, or challenging curves it throws at me. Bring it on! I've got it covered!

Ali this year I am going with EXPLORE. We have recently moved to a new town and are going to build a new house. There are so many new things to explore. Lots of new opportunities and lots of new places. Even though I choose a new word each year I try not to loose sight of the words from previous years. Each old word somehow gets built into the new year.
