One More Seasonal Tradition: Scrapbooking Holiday Cards

2009HolidayCardsPhoto

One of my last holiday traditions each year as I am cleaning up & putting away is to get out my square punch and attack our holiday cards.

My goal is simple: create a collage of faces and designs from the various cards we receive throughout December. I grab my punch and go for it. Over the years I have used different sized square punches depending on the number of cards. This year I used the Extra Giga from Marvy Uchida.

I did a little searching in my archives and found this post talking about the process back in 2005. Here's an excerpt:

Since I am all about simplifying I came to the conclusion that I do not need to keep all the Christmas cards I received this year. I loved getting them. I celebrated each one that came through the mailbox. And now that Christmas is over I would still like to have a bit of a record of the cards from this Christmas, but I certainly don't need to hang on to them all.

It is ok.

How do I decide which part of the card to punch? I think what I have always loved about punching is that I am taking a bit of something and bringing it together with other somethings to create an entirely new something. When I was punching I tried not to think too hard. I laid my punch with the metal side up, slid the card in, and moved the card around using the window as a guide. When I saw something that looked just fine and I punched. Some of the photos were too large to get everyone in the square and that was totally OK. My vision was to bring together a bunch of bits of this year's cards - not preserve each one in its orginal state.

One thing I noticed this year is that people had their photos on all different kinds of papers: metallic, shiny, canvas, etc. This was definitely more of a trend than in years past.

And as much as I love doing each layout individually it is almost more fun to see all these layouts here together. Here's a look at the past card layouts from when I first started this process:

2008:

I found 2008's layout in need of a little assistance. When I found it in the 2008 album last night it was two pages with only the top two rows of photos on the second page. I decided to trim that off and attach it to the top of the full page (and use the Fiskars Apron Lace punch along the bottom).

What do you do with your holiday cards? Keep them? Toss them? Make something with them? Donate them? If you do donate them I would love to hear more about it.

Here is what I ended up doing a few years back with my 10 year collection of holiday cards.

I ended up putting together our annual card/letter along with a collage of the cards we received each year into the album. So each year typical has 4-6 pages with coordinated colors for each year.
It has become one of my favorite albums. It is really fun to look through and see how everyone has changed (including us!).

What about the larger pictures you receive, we got some this year that are like 3 x 5 and if you cut out a square with a punch, you cut out 3 of the people? I'm thinking bigger squares but wanted to see what others do.

I've always put them on 12x12's with a lot of white space on them - a few pictures per page. I love this idea and will certainly use it. I plan on taking one picture off the wall at a time and putting them directly onto a page. That way they don't end up in piles like the last few years in my scrapbook room! Thanks for your continued inspiration. What a treat!!

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this idea! I put together little photo books of the cards intact from year to year..bust those out at Christmas time and page through them to see how everyone has changed. I love this idea a lot better. We know who the cards are from so no need to keep the whole thing (I'll upcycle the rest - see below) and make these...page through these instead of the individual pages. Can't wait to get started! Thanks Ali!
I upcycle my non-photo cards into new ornaments from one of Martha's tutorials here: http://www.marthastewart.com/good-things/holiday-card-ornaments

What a fabulous idea. I don't know why I don't remember seeing this idea from you before. Thank you so much! I often look at beautiful cards and think I can cut the face off and use it again but never have done that. Thank you so much for sharing the different year's too! Quite a treat! I recognize some of the same cards I have received!
    Aloha, Kate

oh and the other thing I worry about is that we may over the years (many many years from now I hope) forget some of the people in the pictures. I was thinking of putting them on a little flap, so you can lift it up and know who they are and how you knew them. Thinking about the things I want to know some day. Just this Christmas I brought out my parents pictures and asked my grandmas who some of the people were and they had forgotten. So important to record those details!!

I use a few cards as patterned paper for December daily then create this punch layout since your CK article years ago. I place the punched pices on a 12 x 12 layout since my Dec Daily is already so full. Do you make this for the Dec daily or your 12 x 12 book?

Sometimes some of the people do get cut out - I usually play around (looking at the bottom of the punch) to see the most people I can get. Or I aim for the people I spend the most time with :).

I make a layout with them - now that I've been dabbling with ATC's and LFB squares, I'll probably save most of the bits for making them. Simply can't throw them away!

I think I probably should label them in some way - maybe some small printed labels. Need to think about it :).

My Parents' church recycles them by donating them to the youth. The youth then create new cards to send to the church shut-ins.

I just read this year on some blog or other a great idea that we are implementing in our family. Stick all the Christmas cards in a basket on the dining room table. Read through one each night and then pray for that person/family. So far, so good. I'm going to try and tell people and/or write them a note to let them now what we're doing and that we prayed for them that day.
    Blessings!

Ali!!!!! I absolutely LOVE this idea! Yet again, you inspire! I actually was just about to do the ol'boring posting of the photo cards on a 12x12 and call it a day. But you have inspired me to do something different with them, and I LOVE IT! Thanks, again, for sharing! (And I just finished my December Daily . . . I posted some photos on my blog. It was my first attempt, and I absolutely loved the process and the final project!)

Amazing how much information is there! What I was most surprised by was the use of 3 ring binders. I've only used the post bound and found that they fill up really quickly. Due to the hassle of adding pages or moving things around I may have to make a switch to the 3 ring. But I do like the finished look of postbound. decisions, decisons...

This is a fantastic idea! I have ofen wondered the best way to keep these pieces of Christmas without having the sheer bulk of keeping a bundle of cards from each year. I'm thinking that this would work equally as well for birthdays! Thanks so much for all the wonderful inspiration you give. Wishing you a fantastic 2010!

Ali, how could I have missed that you do this all these years? Or if I did know that you did this, I had forgotten. Either way, thank you for sharing this wonderful idea.
I normally hang onto the cards because I can't bear to throw them away. Now I have a great solution. Thanks!
