Using 6x12 Divided Page Protectors In Scrapbooking

Last week I shared a few Today You 4x6 photos with digital journaling and wanted to show how I am incorporating these into my albums.

Sometimes when I use my computer to journal on my photos in Photoshop I will then use the photo on a layout with embellishments, etc. Other times it's just nice to journal, print, slip-in, and be done.

It's no secret that I am a fan of divided page protectors in my 12x12 albums. These new 6x12 page protectors from American Crafts are great for adding photos or journal cards or embellished 4x6 cards or ephemera directly into 3-ring albums.

I also think this is one of the things I like about digital scrapbook products - they can easily and simply be added to a photo, printed, and placed inside a page protector such as this one above (or in a 12x12 divided page protector). The story gets told.

You can also achieve this same look without using digital products. After printing photos grab some journal blocks (made by lots of different companies such as these from October Afternoon or you can always just use a piece of cardstock from your scrap box), write your story, adhere it to your photo, and slip into the pockets.

This is scrapbooking.

On the backside of these photos I am planning to use the same Toady You theme with three photos + journaling for a day in Simon's life.

You can read more about my overall album organization process here.

Love the simplicity of this! That's one of the things I've learned from you over the years. It doesn't have to be complicated to be a beautiful layout.
Ali, how do you decide when to begin with solid cardstock and when to start a layout with patterned paper? Do you base it off the look of the photos or the storyline?

This is a great idea! I've been wanting to just do a photo album for the year 2009 but havent because I'm afraid the 'story' will get lost. Perfect idea's....

your simplicity floors me! i was talking to my mom yesterday about classes i've taken since your y/t class and how disappointed i've been in them. she told me, 'well, ali was teaching a lifestyle'. how true. your simple aproach is such a motivation to me -- the one who feels like, in order to be worthwhile it has to be complicated. thanks for reminding me otherwise.

Lately I'm thinking more in terms of organizing my photos than accentuating them. A practical matter of making things work. These are just the product I need.

I haven't seen you using 6x12 before. I love using any and all sizes of page protectors together in my albums, ever since I saw you using 8.5x11 with your 12x12 years ago. I like the simplicity of the page with Anna.

LOVE this! I just picked some of these up at my LSS. I like to use all sizes in my albums...I have all sizes in my albums...6x6, 8x8, 8 1/2x11(both horizontal and vertical), 6x12, and 12x12. I also use baseball card holders too! Love how it looks when flipping thru the albums. Variety is the spice of life!

    Hi Molly!
I thought of you right away when I read this!
I think page protectors with openings for 4x6's are going to revolutionize my process. So simple.
I'm ridiculously excited about this :)

I love the dividers too. I am going to try some digital scrapping one day. I just haven't found the time since we have been moving.

Love this idea Ali! Have just incorporated your divided page protectors in an album and I have to say it's wonderful as it uses so many photos that I wouldnt have otherwise used!
Also as I don't have twitter will respond with an idea here re airplane entertainment - my kids are grown now but we did travel alot with them and they always LOVED finger puppets! And they are small enough to fit in a carry-on!

I love this idea- and I actually went back into my older albums (when I did paper scrapping- pre digital photos, I would get my film developed and then store the photos in the page protectors where I wanted them to end up. Of course, many [were] still sitting there.) So I went back and put all of those photos into divided page protectors. It makes me so happy. :)
Also I love that idea about printing the photo with the journaling block already on the print. My grandma taught me years ago to always ALWAYS write the who/when/where on the backs of photos {I still print them and send them to her}, and occasionally this would be a very cute way to send them to her. :)

Sorry y'all are sick. March is always harder on my family than any other time. Will you show us some of your "assembly line" things before then? Will you be doing a kit with anyone? I'm at a place where the fewer the choices the better the story. you know?

Right now it is just in a 2010 album - depending on how many pages I do this year I will either just have one big album (and down the road they can decide what they want to do) or I will split it into one for him and one for her. Last year I only ended up with one 2009 album and one for Anna's first year.

Ali, do you use Photoshop Elements to create your text, or the full-blown, big-daddy Photoshop? I am considering buying PS Elements... and wondering if it will allow me to add text to photos? Thanks for sharing all your creative ideas!

Both. Most of the time I use Photoshop CS4 but when I do tutorials I use Elements. Elements will definitely allow you to add text to your photos (and so much more).

I love this idea. I've been going crazy with your idea for memorabilia in the 12x12 divided protectors. I think I use at least 3 of those protectors for memorabilia in just my own album in my Library. Thanks for the idea!

Your use of divided page protectors (specifically baseball card protectors) in your 2009 December daily revolutionised my limited scrapbooking mind! I'm primarily a card maker so the big 12x12 size is pretty daunting for me. I found that splitting my page up into smaller more manageable sizes works better for me.
