Book Giveaway | The Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond

Today one person is going to receive a copy of Karen Walrond's lovely new hardcover book: The Beauty of Different.

Constantly bombarded with messages on how to think, how to feel, how to look, it can be very easy to fall into the mindset that we somehow fail as individuals, that we are not enough. But the truth is, those aspects of ourselves that make us individuals are actually the source of our own beauty, our super power. The Beauty of Different explores beauty in eight fresh ways and challenges the reader to revel in her own uniqueness. Combining beautiful imagery, portraiture, insightful commentary, essays, and interviews, this multisensory exploration of what is really beautiful provokes deeper self-discovery. Designed to connect and inspire, The Beauty of Different encourages the reader to reframe her differences, not as shortcomings, but as characteristics of distinction--maybe even superpowers.

Very simply put, this book is a wonderful combination of photos + words. It's interviews and stories addressing subjects such as adventure, individuality, spirituality, and imperfection, woven together with Karen's breathtaking photographs. It's the kind of book you can pick up anytime, read a section or a couple pages, and get inspired to tell your own stories related to the theme.

And the whole concept of different being beautiful...I'm wholeheartedly on board with that. Thank you God for different.

You can check out Karen's Beauty of Different blog here.

In addition, Karen recently came to my house and interviewed me about creativity for BlogHer's Own Your Beauty series. You read her thoughts on creativity and watch the video she created from my interview here.

Also, check out her project "Photovent 2010" - a really cool take on a photo garland. She's got a free download and instructions too.

I am different because I can look at a handful of M&Ms and immediately come up with a plan to eat them in a specific color coded, numerical order. (A la Rain Man with the toothpicks....Drives my hubby nuts!)

I am beautiful because I always want to be sure that the people around me are comfortable and content.

i have embraced over the last few years that I am a working mom (which is different than what i grew up around and my social circle). But it is what works for our family and provides stability. It is a good thing. :)

I am different in that I am absolutely obsessed with all things photo, craft, scrapbook, family heritage related. Some of my family scrapbook, but they dont' think about it 24/7 like I do.

I use to be super quiet and even when I thought of something clever of funny I would keep it to myself. One day I FINALLY said something I was thinking out loud and everyone cracked up. Sometimes it's hit or miss but I love making people laugh so I don't keep quiet anymore. I learned to not care what others think and that was the most liberating feeling I've ever had! I think it came with age for me. I just wish I'd realized it sooner!
I've learned most things don't need to be taken all that seriously!
Thanks for the chance to win!

I dance at the store I work at when a song I like comes on, doesn't matter if there are customers or not.

I am always the one who says, "what if..." or sees the other side of a view point, even if I don't agree. It's better to be informed than not. Thanks for this give-a-way, Ali.

Different: I am very good friends with my ex & his family. (He even came when I wed my forever husband). And we had probably one of the worst divorces ever!

Beautiful: Christ died for my sins (forgiveness). I try to forgive others as well.

I would LOVE to win this & share it with my 15 year old VERY unique, free thinking girl. She is who I strive to imulate.

Thanks for the chance to win.

While I often masquerade as a cynic, in truth, I am a foolish idealist - that makes me both beautiful and genuine.

This strikes a real chord with me -- too personal to share on the "interwebs" but learned through therapy. My "difference" is what saved me.

I have a cool scar on my temple from when I was a kid, a mole between my toes, crazy eyebrows, and curly hair. What makes me beautiful? The smile that graces my face when I look at my babies!

I broke my nose when I was young - as a result it has a bump on the bridge and if you look closely you'll see that it's crooked. It's a unique nose, it's mine and I kinda like it :)

I have been through a lot in my life and one of life's lessons I have learned "No matter what others may think of you or feel about you it is what you feel and think of yourself that matters" It took me along time to get to this point because I am a natural giver always putting others before myself and learning late in life that it is ok for me to be first sometimes. I have always loved giving of myself to others but I came to realize you need to give to yourself as well or you get used up and then there is nothing left for anyone. So I have made my self as special as I have others. Thank you for the chance to win this beautiful book and if I don't win I will go to my library and still read it. Thanks for passing it along.
