Book Giveaway | The Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond

Today one person is going to receive a copy of Karen Walrond's lovely new hardcover book: The Beauty of Different.

Constantly bombarded with messages on how to think, how to feel, how to look, it can be very easy to fall into the mindset that we somehow fail as individuals, that we are not enough. But the truth is, those aspects of ourselves that make us individuals are actually the source of our own beauty, our super power. The Beauty of Different explores beauty in eight fresh ways and challenges the reader to revel in her own uniqueness. Combining beautiful imagery, portraiture, insightful commentary, essays, and interviews, this multisensory exploration of what is really beautiful provokes deeper self-discovery. Designed to connect and inspire, The Beauty of Different encourages the reader to reframe her differences, not as shortcomings, but as characteristics of distinction--maybe even superpowers.

Very simply put, this book is a wonderful combination of photos + words. It's interviews and stories addressing subjects such as adventure, individuality, spirituality, and imperfection, woven together with Karen's breathtaking photographs. It's the kind of book you can pick up anytime, read a section or a couple pages, and get inspired to tell your own stories related to the theme.

And the whole concept of different being beautiful...I'm wholeheartedly on board with that. Thank you God for different.

You can check out Karen's Beauty of Different blog here.

In addition, Karen recently came to my house and interviewed me about creativity for BlogHer's Own Your Beauty series. You read her thoughts on creativity and watch the video she created from my interview here.

Also, check out her project "Photovent 2010" - a really cool take on a photo garland. She's got a free download and instructions too.

I'm stubborn. I love spending time with my family but also love spending time by myself. Most of my friends love to be surrounded by people all of the time, so this makes me different in my circle.

I am 36 years old. Happily married for 21 years. Two sons, ages 20 and 16. I am different, because I've done it successfully against the odds.

I am commenting for my own good, to use for encouragement today. I am beautiful because I can smile during almost any situation and I am different because I am honest.

I favor the green skittles vs the red ones because everyone seems to think the red is the best. :)

I love Change. Not many people can say that. I try to embrace it, even when it is hard because it helps me grow... especially when I don't want to. I think that is beautiful.

My friends tell me I am a "can do girl" who just won't let obstacles get in the way of accomplishing goals. I like being perceived this way.

I have a mole on my left cheek that I have always hidden with concealer and have always wanted to have it removed. I went through a hard time healthwise and decided life's too short to worry about the little things, as long as I'm healthy I love everything about me!

My huge dimples! I used to cover them up when I laughed or smiled as a child - shy and embarrassed because folks loved to comment on them. Now I embrace them and I'm so, so happy that my kids inherited them as well!

I can't make mouth noises. You know, how most people can imitate things? I can't do that. But I try and it makes my fiance think I'm adorable. :)

I was the tallest girl in my highschool, but that was okay, my Dad was proud of my height. My feet were also the biggest among the girls in school and the nearest store that carried my size was 100 miles away! (Size 12 5A over 7A) They rarely make that size anymore, I have always wished for normal feet. Another big desire was that I could draw and my college grand daughter has been given that talent, so I can enjoy her work.

Although you asked to say what is different and beautiful about me I couldn't help but think of how great this book would be for my daughter. She is a black single adopted child in a community where 99% are white, biological children living in large families. She is strikingly beutiful in not only her appearance but her creativity, knowledge and personality. She inspires me to look at life in new and different ways all the time. Although we are constantly trying to tell her about how we are similar (we all have two eyese, one nose, etc.) as well as talk to her about how special she is with her unique traits, she can't help but often feel like she sticks out like as sore thumb. How wonderful it would be to have this book to celebrate her as different AND beautiful. And win or not win, thanks for sharing as this book will definitely become part of our library.
