December Daily 2010 | Day Nine
Tags:Welcome to Day Nine!
How's it going? Still hanging in there?
I felt a bit of creative fatigue myself today and then got over it once I started playing with these little photos.
Photos today (except the enlargement) are from my Fujifilm INSTAX MINI 7S Camera. I first read about this on Elsie's blog. I brought it along with me to Greece and took a bunch of photos and totally loved it as a fun toy camera. I've been playing with it again here over the last couple of days capturing holiday decor.
For this first page I just adhere three of them along the bottom - with the middle photo overlapping the other two. Along the bottom I added a typewriter-typed journaling strip.
The middle transparent page is a 8.5x11 page-protector that's been cut down to four pockets (and new holes punched). When I created my foundation pages it included the daily number and the two stars. In the one empty pocket I added a mini photo of Anna and a "sweet anna-girl" label." After slipping it into the page protector I stitched it on my machine with just a bit of yellow thread.
Behind the photo of Anna I slipped in a little lego building paper that had come in Simon's advent box today.
Page two includes six mini photos, typed labels, and a bit of very cool vintage wallpaper from Papier Valise (click on Paper and then look for Vintage Wall Paper: Holiday Colors Pack).
My typewriter got a workout making the little labels.

Oh my, does anyone know the name if the "a wonderfully ordinary december day" sentence was handwritten or if it's a font?
If it's a font, that's the most beautiful font I've ever seen!

it's part of Ali's handdrawn holiday brushes and stamps (she has linked to them above, but here's the link again: http://www.designerdigitals.com/digital-scrapbooking/supplies/product_info.php/products_id/8709
Hi Pierre, that is actually Ali's handwriting but I believe it might be part of one of her Christmas digital packs.

love love these mini pictures, how fun they are. Your decorations and trees are wonderful. Would love to have a typewriter like that, it was my favorite class in high school, the class was set up with one typewriter without the letters on it and I got that seat and loved learning to type and did fairly well considering there were not letters.
My camera won't let me upload my pages/pictures to the camera have no idea why. my husband and I kept playing around with it but nothing happened. Does anybody have any ideas or suggestion.
I'm thinking of posting my journaling at least for now and linking up so I can stay on top of this. I love love reading everybody's comments and seeing all your wonderful albums. So much talent and fun stuff out there. Great job for everybody still hanging in there.
And Ali thanks so much for the comments via email back to us about comments. This is so cool and helpful. Have fun with Simon tonight on your secret adventure.

I think the use of the typewriter is fabulous! Did you just type on Cream Puff cardstock or something different?? It almost looks like twill tape - wonderful!!
Any advice on shopping for a vintage typewriter??

Thanks Ali and Amy for the great replies!
Now I'm on the hunt for a typewriter - can't wait to find a good one!!
Morning - it's right onto the cream puff cardstock. I think finding a working typewriter is a bit of luck. I know there are some on etsy + ebay and many of those say they have been tested out. If you are looking locally I would test out the keys, etc. For this one I'm still able to get the ribbon so that's a good thing (ordered on ebay).
Also if you find one that you love but it needs a little tweaking, here is a site that has typewriter repair shops by country and state. I had to have both of mine fixed not too long ago. Good luck, typewriters are so cool =0)
and it would help if I put the URL down. More coffee coming soon. http://site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html

Lovin your DD so far! I am waiting for your Technique Tuesday holiday stamps to arrive in the mail - saving a spot for one on my page from yesterday :)
I was wondering...do you scrap at all hours of the day and night, or do you scrap each page throughout the day vs in one sitting? I am finding that leaving everything sprawled on a table, like a "scrapbook buffet" is what's enabling me to keep this project going. The funny thing is my table "calls" me 24/7 and I am actually getting up to tweak or continue my pages at all hours..it's funny.

Definitely not all hours of the day + night! I do most of my work during the day while Simon is in school and Anna has a babysitter. The album + my supplies are living on my table right now. I've been doing most of these pages all in one sitting - meaning from start to finish. There have been some days where I've gotten most of it done, including taken photos for this site, and then I complete the post later in the evening after the kids have gone to bed.
I know my way is kinda weird...but I get the kids off between 6-7:30am, leave for work at 8am and get home at about 6:30pm, so I got inspired that I could really do this anyway after reading your philosophy about how "anything goes" as long as it works for me....and now I'm having SO much fun.

I am enjoying this journey, even if I'm 7 days behind. I'm really hoping my Instax I ordered arrives soon. I have so many ideas brewing for these tiny clips of life.

Jenny C I too am 7 days behind, I'm making notes & taking photos but creative time just isn't available, hoping to get a few good hours in tomorrow when my husband is home.

Ali,
Let me ask you about your instax..I too have that camera and find it difficult to get consistantly decent photos. I took it to FLorida over Thanksgiving (with a little book I made out of transparencies and the intention to only use the instax photos throughout) and so many were "whited" out...kept reading instructions and looking online to figure out what I was doing wrong..playing with settings. I finally found the perfect "spot" to take photos, by that time the trip was almost over.
When I started putting together my December Daily, I wanted to use the instax also, but was deiscouraged..yours look awesome and it's such a fun look. Any tips?
Thanks,
Deb

Hi Deb - I think it is totally a challenge to get consistently good photos. I actually have no illusions that any of them are going to turn out at all - then I'm pleasantly surprised when they do!!!
For this series of photos I used the "house/indoor" setting. A couple of them were taken in the evening when it was pretty dark (they are a little washed out from the flash) and the others were taken during the day yesterday. I think I took twice as many as you see here - the other half were blurry or the color was really bad.
I had a similar trial experience in Greece. It took me awhile to find the setting that I liked there - and to figure out the distance so that what I was trying to focus on was not blurred.
I have an instax and adore it - especially for outdoor photos. It's too bad you can't turn the flash off, on any of the models (I have the 55i, which is think is "fanciest" model - I'm sure the photos it takes are the same as the other models, though).
Something I read about and just tried today (with success!) is putting dark masking/duct tape over the flash. I used two pieces, making sure it didn't cover the photo release slot. It so far has yielded much better indoor photos for me. I took two in rooms with filtered sunlight and I'm really happy with the results. No strange washed out flash reflections. Hooray!
OK! Now I don't feel so bad...I'm not the onnly one. Still love that little camera, I just have to make sure I have a LOT of extra film..haha :)

I really like the muted tones from the large crisp B&W combined with the instant mini camera and then the bold splashes of red from the stars! I've gone back & looked at your pics & layout several times now! :>

I LOVE the way you are combining digital and traditional scrapbooking in your pages! I have never done digital but would like to try. Is Photoshop the software you use? Is this something that needs to be purchased or do you download it? Any advice you could give me would be much appreciated! Thanks so much! :)

Hi Michelle - you can download a free trial of Photoshop Elements here: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshopel/?sdid=FIIHP&
Once you download that program I'd recommend checking out my series on Getting Started With Digital Scrapbooking: http://aliedwards.com/2010/01/getting-started-digital-scrapbooking.html

Ali, Don't you just love your Smith-Corona? I have two of them that have been in my family since they were new and they are dear old work-horses. I just love the sound they make when I use them. Love your pages today (and every day).
