December Daily 2010 | Day One

WELCOME TO DECEMBER DAILY 2010.

Even with all the preparation leading up to today I still can't really believe we are underway again.

For the first page in this album, just like in 2009, I chose to write a bit about our Advent calendars. Simon and Anna were both super excited to find new Advent calendars on the table. This is one of the things I love seeing in my December Daily from year to year - the repetition of traditions.

With the addition of the cover page (free download offered yesterday - grab it here) I decided to include a new transparent page (the star page - you can see it in the before image at the bottom of this post - is still the first page in the album) using a silver script transparency from Hambly. The "1" on top of the transparency is from The Girl's Paperie.

Before printing the 6x8 photo page (2, 4x6 photos on a 6x8 canvas) I added a Christmas twill across the middle.

The second page features a piece of packaging I cut out from the Playmobil Advent Calendar. This one had extra packaging vs. the Lego package - I would have cut that one up too if I could!

Using a sheet of cardstock that was twice as tall as the Playmobile packaging I created a "lift-up" page to include more room for journaling by folding it in half and adhering the Playmobile packaging to the front.

Here's what it looked like after I added my journaling.

I stitched around the inside to give a bit more of a "home" for the words and stamped a simple title using the Basic Uppercase letter stamps from Hero Arts. The little image of the Lego Advent Calendar was printed from Lego.com.

Here's a look at the before image:

So excited that December is finally here! I blogged my journaling yesterday (http://scrappyhare.blogspot.com/2010/12/december-daily-day-1.html) but haven't uploaded my pictures yet. Of course I LOVE your pages!

A couple of questions: When you handwrite your journaling on textured cardstock, what pen tip size do you use? Sometimes I have issues with my pens writing funky on textured cardstock, but maybe it's just me - I generally use the American Crafts Precision Pro .03

And my other question (though I have a feeling I already know what you're going to say LOL): For yesterday I have my main story about our Elf on a Shelf tradition, and how his appearance marks the beginning of the Christmas season in our house each year. But then I have another small story (on the same blog post I linked above, but regretably no pictures) that I really want to remember... but I really can't see making an entire page about it for my regular scrapbook... Is it "okay" to include it in my DD? What would you do?

I like the .03 Precision Pens from American Crafts too - that's what I use. I've also been trying out some pens from Faber-CAstell - need to try those on cardstock.

And I vote for including! We ended up going to see Santa yesterday too - I'm going to use that for my Day Two story. It's totally up to you :). Document what's important to you :) - you can always add in a second story for day one!

I'm also going to try a digital mix this year - shake it up a bit!
Ali, have you thought about using the Zutter to bind your book rather than the rings?

Could it handle a book this big?

I have a 2" size binding, I just dont' know if I'll like the look of all the holes. It kind of takes away from the simplicity of your design, but I do like the way it holds a book together.

    Ali,
I love the advent topic for day one! And the journaling underneath is great. I read your post about advent actions and then your post about your chalk/magnet board with the advent boxes and now you have pictures of playmobil (at least someone suggested that was where it was from) and legos... I was just wondering how many advent calendars you have going in your house? Are the action cards in the box advent calendar and then each of the kids have their own? I'm just curious because we currently have 3 advent calendars up in our house; one with things to do as a family (similar to your action cards), one with treats/toys for the kids, and one with treats for the dog. It seems a little silly having so many but we didn't want to leave our dog out (she has had her calendar since before the kids came along) and we like the idea of both small toys/treats and family activities. I was just curious about how you are juggling all the different calendars.

We've got 4 (it's a little excessive). Lego + Playmobile (one for Simon + one for Anna) + the boxes (those usually have a little treat in them) and then the Advent action cards. The cards are in a little basket on the table. The Lego, Playmobile + the boxes are done in the morning. The cards are for the afternoon.

The positive energy is absolutely contagious! The love here is just so inspiring and it is making this project exciting and not daunting at all.

I added another page to yesterday (yep - kinda 3 stories for one day...lots to say I guess!) because we finally got some snow. Now today, it is a blizzard out my front window as I sit here and write this...fun comparison to my photo from yesterday - today my daughter was shoveling this morning and now this evening, all in all there is about 2 feet of snow with more to come.

Anyhow, I would love to link my pages. I may use photoshop no prob, but this url online linking stuff is not my cup of tea. I only follow the blogs! I think I am the last person on earth that does not have a blog, twitter, facebook, etc. place online to store my pages. Am I out of luck?

    Thanks!

Steph - you could always add your pages to an online gallery - like the Flickr group (http://www.flickr.com/groups/decemberdaily2010/) or upload your pages to Two Peas.

      Ahhhh....

Ali - I have followed your blog for a while now but decided to do DD for the first time this year - at the very last minute. Missed the post that discussed flickr and now see how easy to set that up.

      Thank you!

It will be a bit harder for me to do an update daily because I order my photos about every two weeks. I plan on keeping up with the journalling daily.

I printed my Day 1 pics at a Canadian developer with the 6x8 templates. Both of them had the line at the bottom of the page cut off! Urgh...I wanted to cry. The layouts were beautiful - those templates are amazing Ali by the way! First time I ever used one and I am now sold for sure!

Anyway, I measured and my print was actually 7 7/8" long, but a true 6" wide. I don't want to badmouth any companies, but is this just a fluke today or is does any one know if photo developers do a True 8" x 6"? I've only ever enlarged 5x7, 8x10, 8x12 and never had anything cut off.

This won't get me down, though. I will still put them in my album and figure a solution later, but this is just so weird!

    Thanks!

Definitely very excited to complete my third december daily! I'm also very excited to start my first blog. December is definitely a great month for me to document with lots of special events, beautiful Minnesota snow, and part of the month at college and the end of the month at home. Thanks for inspiring me to document the everyday, Ali.
