Snow Day
Around here it doesn't take much for schools to close due to snow (often they close at just the threat of snow).
We actually get snow maybe once or twice a winter.
This little bit of white stuff you see in the photo above closed all the area schools and was completely gone by noon. Mother Nature did tease us a bit throughout the day with a couple hard snowfalls, a bit of accumulation, and then sun that would melt all possibility of it really being a snow day.
It turned out to be a great chance to do a day of photo documentation. Here's what I captured throughout the day:
6:30am | Early morning excitement. Simon exclaiming, "How'd I get so lucky?"
6:35am | Hair brushing, face washing, tooth brushing. Followed by breakfast and Sesame Street.
9:00am | Time to go outside. I'm glad we went out early because there really wasn't any left later in the day. It was also cool because it really started coming down while we were out there which was very fun.
We walked around to check out the front yard and that's when it really started coming down.
And then we were just cold.
We headed back inside where Simon watched a movie and Anna and I played in her room.
10:00am | Oh self-timer I love you so.
11:00am | We headed out for an errand and to grab some lunch. The snow was completely gone when we left the house.
Noon | When we returned home it started again. I had high hopes that this round would stick. It did, but again, just for a bit.
12:30pm | What snow day would be complete without lego-building time?
While Simon built a pyramid, Anna built towers.
And played with her Playmobil Take-A-Long Farm (awesome toy).
And made pizza.
And took a nap.
And this is what it looked like outside when she went down. Full sun.
And I tried to get a bit of work in while she slept and Simon kept building.
3:00pm | When she woke up it was back to playing, annoying Simon by trying to sneak legos, reading books, playing in her kitchen in just her diaper after eating too many goldfish crackers and getting sick, etc. Life is really busy when you're two.
As the afternoon came to a close we watched Mary Poppins and then had grilled cheese and apples for dinner when Daddy came home.
What a wonderful snow day for all of you. It's so funny to see your little bit of snow and no school. It did look pretty in your yard though. How fun for the kids to play together all day. Love that you took pictures of it all. My kids are home on a snow day today, we have it coming down at about 2 inches an hour. So their will be plenty of shoveling and playing for us today and sadly our snow is going to stick and stick around for a awhile. We are tired of the snow this year. Thanks for sharing Ali and hope to see you do a layout about this day.

Looks like the kids had fun on their "snow day". It took over a foot of snow here in MN for our schools to call a snow day on Monday.

Love the peek into your snow day! I really love the pictures of the kids together - the first one reminds me of my own. Our youngest always stands alongside his brothers or sister and does the same thing they do. We love it. :)

It's like Spring in SC. I so hope we do not get any more snow. Your photos certainly tell a story.

Snow in the PNW is a rarity. My son posted some pics of Seattle, and yes, even at 38 he's still a kid in the snow.
I love Anna's knowing look at the camera in the bedroom shot. She's a natural.

I had just posted "Snow Day" on my blog when I saw your post. Funny. Unfortunately in New Hampshire, our snow days do not disappear by noon. I just posted a picture of my backyard covered by about 4 feet of snow. Hopefully, I'll get wonderful pictures of my children today... if they stay still long enough.

i can't take my eyes off that old-school little people house! the blonde lady in blue, bald man in green, and the rocking horse are images that are forever ingrained in my memory! did you have it saved from your childhood, or is it an awesome flea market find?
My mom could open a "vintage fisher price" shop from her attic! My kids, nieces and nephews have had a wonderful time playing with them at Grandma and Grandpas!
Here's the best etsy shop for Fisher Price: http://www.etsy.com/shop/toysofthepast
I have those left over from my childhood, too- always get warm fuzzies when I see them. :)
was thinking exactly the same. i enjoyed some snow days of my own with that same house. thanks for the trip down memory lane!

We have snow days like that. It makes me really mad when now they have to make 11 days or so when at least 2 of them shouldn't have to be. WE start nex week staying 30 min longer.
I noticed the little people house too. How old is that? I had those when I was younger(about 38 years or so ago). lol
Thanks for sharing your snow day!

Living in Manitoba, I would love a winter with that little snow. We have been bombarded with the white stuff so many times this winter it's not even funny. One of the back roads that I drove on yesterday had a bank on one side that was higher than my car. There are places around where my parents live that the snowplow can't see over for the snow. Today, a few school divisions have cancelled school because the combination of cold and wind makes the temperature feel like -47 degrees celsius. (I'm not sure what the conversion is to Fahrenheit, but it's probably one of the coldest days we've had all winter.
I love that Anna was playing with the vintage Fisher Price Little People house. Takes me back to my childhood. :)

What a great day - wish they would give us snow days up here in Calgary - it was -30 yesterday with the wind chill and life carries on, so school closures, frozen driving conditions and cold cold air.
Nothing shuts down, no schools, no works - by May - we will start to see sprouts (maybe april) - and we usually see them with snow much like your outdoor plants - just so much later
So glad you enjoyed your day

In Montana (Helena, at least) we don't have snow days. Right now as I prepare to go to school (I'm a teacher with 2 school-age kids) it's 17 below zero, and we have probably about 6-8 inches of snow on the ground, enough to make a great berm on my driveway which I probably couldn't get through. We have had indoor recess at school for two days now, and today will be the third. I wish they WOULD declare a snow day, even though we'd have to make it up.

I just adore these little glimpses into your life. I almost feel like I'm part of your family and it reminds me of what it was like when my children were small and still at home. It's a welcome walk down memory lane. Thanks so much for sharing.

love that you have a snow day with only millimeters!! reminds me of when we lived in vancouver - but now we are in montreal for our first winter and the snowbanks are as tall as me and i'm tall for a girl (5'9) and i have still have to send my 5 year old to the curb to wait for the bus. at the beginning of the season when the temp was -20 (shock for me!) an the snow was falling fast i called the school to confirm that school was still on and they didn't bat an eye at the amount of snow or the temperature. we are still adjusting but it's lovely to be reminded of the mindset back home.
love the new house! we are still adjusting to ours and still are negotiating with each other what is going to go on the walls. i have almost won. love the carpet in anna's room - where did you get it?? thanks!
Hi Jen - I can only imagine moving from this climate to a place that really sees winter :). That rug is from CB2: http://www.cb2.com/rugs/accessories/1. It doesn't look like they offer it anymore but they've got other cool options (specially love the letterpress)
this is our everyday right now......

Ali--I so enjoy reading your blog daily. Your family is so precious. My oldest son is a huge Lego enthusiast, just as Simon is. He currently builds then stores the final results on shelves (very space consuming). How do you handle Simon's Lego love? Storing is such a challenge. :)
Hi Beck! I did a whole post about that here: http://aliedwards.com/2010/11/for-the-love-of-lego.html

It sounds like a lovely, quiet kind of day. I remember those days when my boys were little. (They're 21 & 23 now!) Wish I had thought to take more pics of those times.
Your photography is wonderful, btw. :-)
