Snow Day

Around here it doesn't take much for schools to close due to snow (often they close at just the threat of snow).

We actually get snow maybe once or twice a winter.

This little bit of white stuff you see in the photo above closed all the area schools and was completely gone by noon. Mother Nature did tease us a bit throughout the day with a couple hard snowfalls, a bit of accumulation, and then sun that would melt all possibility of it really being a snow day.

It turned out to be a great chance to do a day of photo documentation. Here's what I captured throughout the day:

6:30am | Early morning excitement. Simon exclaiming, "How'd I get so lucky?"

6:35am | Hair brushing, face washing, tooth brushing. Followed by breakfast and Sesame Street.

9:00am | Time to go outside. I'm glad we went out early because there really wasn't any left later in the day. It was also cool because it really started coming down while we were out there which was very fun.

We walked around to check out the front yard and that's when it really started coming down.

And then we were just cold.

We headed back inside where Simon watched a movie and Anna and I played in her room.

10:00am | Oh self-timer I love you so.

11:00am | We headed out for an errand and to grab some lunch. The snow was completely gone when we left the house.

Noon | When we returned home it started again. I had high hopes that this round would stick. It did, but again, just for a bit.

12:30pm | What snow day would be complete without lego-building time?

While Simon built a pyramid, Anna built towers.

And played with her Playmobil Take-A-Long Farm (awesome toy).

And made pizza.

And took a nap.

And this is what it looked like outside when she went down. Full sun.

And I tried to get a bit of work in while she slept and Simon kept building.

3:00pm | When she woke up it was back to playing, annoying Simon by trying to sneak legos, reading books, playing in her kitchen in just her diaper after eating too many goldfish crackers and getting sick, etc. Life is really busy when you're two.

As the afternoon came to a close we watched Mary Poppins and then had grilled cheese and apples for dinner when Daddy came home.

Oh Ali, thank you so much for sharing your day with us. I love the play by play photos, this is what it's all about in my opinion! Here in Cali we are expecting snow this weekend, (fingers crossed) and I hope to document our day as well.

Love these kinds of posts--seeing what the hours spell out for others.
Is Anna's bed from IKEA? Do you like it? I'm looking for a new one for our nursery.

There is a day in the year that we all become children again and slow down, enjoy the splendor of beauty and life. I find no other day gives me such joy than that of a "Snow Day" when mother nature releases her creative side and says "enjoy"

Glad you enjoyed your day with your treasures...
    Cheers,
    Jan

Oh, the memories! Your wonderful snow day reminded me so much of days when my children were little. Occasionally I get a peek of a child's day of play/work (playing is their work), when we have a grandchild or two, or three, or how ever many up to eight, spend a night. How lucky and smart are you to be documenting their days. I have the photos of our children when they were little, but I was not journalling or documenting in any form. I always meant to. Enjoy your beautiful family and keep those new memories from fading.

Here in Oklahoma we usually only get (maybe) a couple of significant snowfalls a year but our weather has gone haywire these last 2 years. We were out the better part of 2 weeks this year and far exceeded our snow days. To make it up, the kiddos had to go to school on President's Day and will have their school days extended 20 minutes every day until school is out. Not the most popular idea in my house! However, summer vacation will not be impacted so that's a relief to the kids. Love your photos!

Very cute. I live in Utah where it snows a lot and we have never had a snow day for the past 18 years. I dream of one.

I also noticed you with your computer mouse in your left hand. Do you mouse left handed? I would be interested in hearing about that.

    Playmobile is awesome!!!

So fun to see how you spent your day Ali! It always amazes me when I hear about schools closing with just a little bit of snow...you are so lucky! I have lived in the mountains of Utah my whole life and seen every winter condition you can imagine. I can only remember two or three days where they canceled school for a snow day in 37 years...but lots of days I wish they had! Glad you enjoyed your day and thanks for sharing!

    Hello Ali,

we live in Austin, Texas and had a "snow" day like yours on 2/4. A little bit of snow in the morning, gone by noon because the sun came out, no school though because the roads were slippery. I almost have the same set of photos from that day that you took. I am curious how you will include them in your Project Life album or will you come up with a different layout. Thank you for sharing. You are always so inspiring. Birgit

Love the natural ease of your everyday life post. I love days like that. Where did you buy your shower curtain in the kids (?) bathroom? And what kind of print is hanging over the potty? One of my goals this year is to get stuff on our walls...I'm finding it's alot harder than it sounds. Thanks!

The shower curtain came from Anthropologie (a few years ago). The bird print was a gift and it came from http://threepotatofourshop.com/

Simon brushing Anna's hair is pretty much the cutest thing I have ever seen:) What a duo!! We had 12" here in MN last weekend, obviously no one had school Monday 'cause of President's Day, so the opportunity for an ACTUAL SNOW DAY was crushed!!

Love the pic of you & Anna on the floor reading! Also loved seeing the old fischer price house & little people. My sister & I spent sooo much time as kids playing with that - such happy happy memories. Here in KC we got a lot more snow than that. It looks like the best of both worlds (snow & sun) from your pictures!

Our snow day was pretty much the same as yours....not much on the ground and all gone by noon! But I was happy to see it since it had been over 25 yrs since we'd had any real accumulation.

Some of my greatest pictures of my daughter are her snow days. We live in OH and we average 3-5 snow days each year and she is a Senior this year and still loves to play in the snow! Loved your pictures of Simon and Anna!

Such beautiful photos! I love all the ones of them together, and the one of you and Anna on the floor together. :) It's so funny - I never imagined that you would have so little snow, being so far north as you are. That's what snow looks like around our house here in Houston, Texas. And even the *chance* of snow is enough to shut down our entire city. Of course I think winter is over for us by now as it has been 80 degrees (F) the last few days.

I think I need to take a vacation in the upper Midwest! This southern girl is craving some REAL snow! :)

Thank you, Ali, for letting us see into your life. Your kids are so precious - looks like they are very close. Little Anna is so cute with her haircut, and Simon, of course is as handsome as ever!
It is so interesting to hear about 'snow days' in the comments. I live in Northern Alberta, and snow days are as everyday as winter life. We do have 'cold' days, where the buses don't run at -40 or colder. In recent years, we haven't had a lot of them.
Keep warm and have a great day.

Here in NC, snow has the same effect. Sometimes just the fear of snow is enough for a snow day. We do sometimes get snow and ice and when we do, school can be closed for a week because we are not equipped for plowing. Glad you all enjoyed your snow day!

so simple yet so great. I sent this on to my daughter to show her how "doable" this is. Hopefully she will try this as it is a great way to keep a record to look back on in years to come.

Can I ask a silly question?? How do you make the vertical stroke next to the time. I can't seem to find it on the keypad. Is this a photoshop thing? Would love to know.

Hi Christina - on my keypad (it's a mac) it's right above the "return" key. You have to hold down the shift key to activate it - otherwise you get a \.

You MUST have the old fisher price set. LOVE IT! My Mum still has it at her house and the kids love to play with it. [It used to be mine and my brothers] Looks like you had a great snow day. Great memories to make together.
