Project Life | Week Thirty-Two

Welcome to Project Life | Week Thirty-Two.

project life | week 32

Two big stories this week around here were wizard camp and my Danskin triathlon. Simon attended a week-long wizarding day camp - I think it was his favorite of the three camps he's attended (the other two were Shrek and Jedi). No photos from his time at camp but a cool certificate and a note we wrote to him that was in his lunch.

project life | week 32

On the back of the camp certificate is a print out of my time from the triathlon.

project life | week 32

Last week Anna was drawing on her legs and this week we got it on paper.

project life | week 32

I had quite a few photos I wanted to include for the triathlon so I included one of these 6x12 divided page protectors from American Crafts ( Two Peas | Scrapbook.com ).

I included one long journaler with the text from my triathlon post. You can see a video about working with that hybrid/digital product here. Still loving that blog to scrapbook flow.

project life | week 32

On the back of the long journaler I adhered three additional photos. These were all 4x6. I adhered them onto the back and then trimmed off the excess with my paper trimmer.

The last page includes a few more photos from the event, one of Simon, and a couple other little extras tucked right inside the pockets.

One of the things I like about this project is that it's not just for everyday stuff - the big stuff fits right in when you add a few more page protectors. I was excited to see Becky's post last week about the new styles of page protectors they will be releasing this fall. I did notice that she won't be including a 6x12 with pockets for 4x6 photos so I'll keep getting those from American Crafts.

It will be interesting to see if I can make this year fit within two 12x12 albums. It's starting to feel full again and there's still four months to go.

Project Life is a product created by Becky Higgins. It can be anything you want it to be. The pieces of the album kit (similar to the one I’m using) are available here. If you live outside the US check Becky’s site for more information on sources. View all my posts about Project Life here.

    Ali,

    Great, great, great...
I'm still wandering if you are happy with project life as "the only thing" (of stuff!!!). Do you keep extra stuff in boxes (for example your number of the triathlon (I would definitely keep that)) or when the stuff doesn't make it into PL will it end up in the trash?
I asked about your stuff in your Q & A series, but it didn't make it to the answers. I have boxes and boxes filled, but I'm not sure what to do with it. Thanks.

Hi An - right now I'd say most of the things I keep are going in here (I'm not big on keeping lots and lots of stuff). I did get those Memory Boxes from Paper Coterie that I'll be using to store any extra school things for the upcoming year: http://aliedwards.com/2011/08/love-these-memory-keepers.html. And thanks for reminding me about the tri number - I had wanted to add that into this week as well - totally forgot about it and need to get it out of my bag.

    Hi Ali!

I was wondering if the Wizarding Camp (and Jedi Camp) were only offered in your state. My son saw your pictures of Simon and is begging me to take him to a camp just like it. Just thought I'd ask. Thank you!

The one Simon attending is through our local Parks & Rec department (city of Eugene)...you might want to check and see what camps are offered through your city.

I really hate to ask you a computer question but I just downloaded a bunch of your brushes and after seeing your blog I notice that you have the "stamp" on the little grid journaling cards. How do you print on that tiny paper? I'm sure I'm missing something...

Hi Maureen...that is actually a stamp (http://www.techniquetuesday.com/Studio-AE-Membership/SAETh.html). You could definitely print on those cards - just saw a great post from Liz on how to do that here: http://paisleepress.com/2011/08/project-life-how-to-print/

Ditto!! My dd just finished a box of Hello Kitty band-aids the other day. I'm hoping to resue it from the recycling bin and add it to my PL album. Thanks for the idea!

Your projects are so interesting! Much different from my type of scrapbooks. But I really like how yours add the big and little events of your life.

I've been very inspired this year by your Project Life efforts and having been contemplating attempting this project in 2012. Since the Project Life Core Kit and supplies tend to run out fast, I was wondering how many additional kit supplies, beyond the initial Core Kit that you have ordered? Looking back at the first 8 months, is there anything that you ran low on or wished you had gotten more of?

Hi Annette - thanks. In addition to the main kit I bought the blank journal cards (1 pack) and I've been using the 6x12 divided page protectors from American Crafts (probably used 1-2 packs throughout the year). I think next year Becky is doing a more a-la-carte set up vs. the full kit.

Hi Ali, Congrats on the Triatholon!! That's pretty amazing. I'm considering running a 5K at Christmas. My friends are already runners and I'm not. I've never been much of an athlete but thinking I should and can do a race for me! How did you start? How do you help stay motivated??

I think the best advice is to begin slowly - maybe just walking at first and then start doing some walking mixed with running. Lots of people have recommended Couch to 5K. You can check that out here: http://www.c25k.com/

    Hi Ali -

Becky is going to offer 6 x 12 page protectors this fall: http://www.beckyhiggins.com/blog/2011/08/fall-2011-products-sneak-peek/product-cards7-17/

Yep - but they are not divided ones (like the ones I use above that can fit 6, 4x6 photos).

Gee Ali I just love your Project Life.

You have such a sense of capturing all the little bits that make up the big bit. I am totally enjoying PL (my first time) and while I haven't gotten quite so many cool bits, I feel so proud of myself for doing it period.

With one 18 year old son the content is so different and my creative challenge is changing the focus - but it is really stretching me which is a great thing!

I also love how positively encouraging you always are. I am excited about next year's PL and the 6x12's will be perfect for your long journalers (not that i have minded the sewing).

Thank you for sharing so much of your life (in order to share your creative process) in such a public forum. You have really changed my concepts of memory keeping in some profound ways.

I love reading the weekly updates to your PL. Just wondering how many other pages you end up doing (e.g. for Simon or Anna's albums) or if you find you don't have the time? How many different albums do you have on the go?

Exactly what I was wondering about too. Is this it for 2011? Or are you still making some pages? Since you've added so much I would assume you feel like you've pretty much got it covered. Also, do you think you'll do this again next year?

Also - this album really doesn't take much time at all. In general I've been printing and adding as I go throughout the week. Maybe 2-3 hours per week at the high end.

Good question. I'd say overall this year I've done less "regular" layouts compared with years past. BUT I think I've included more photos and stories throughout this year (on a more consistent basis) than any previous year since I started scrapbooking. More photos have been printed for sure.

I've done a few other layouts this year - and I do have a 2011 album going with pages I've put together this year (you can see those all here (looks like I need to add about 5 others from 2011 so far): http://aliedwards.com/about-ali/portfolio/scrapbook-layouts#

At this point I do think I will do this again next year.

Still love seeing your PL week and happy you keep us posted on it. The best part for this week was seeing all the pictures and writing about you in it. Your kids will love looking back and seeing what an awesome job you did and the fun you had.

I'm excited about Becky's new items for the fall too, so many cool choices. Can't wait to see the new designs for next year also. Hoping one of them is like the turquoise one we have now, it's my favorite so far.
    Have a great weekend.
