December Daily™ 2011 | The Album Cover

IMG_7549

And here we go again!

I'm excited to be getting my December Daily™ album underway for 2011. It's been fun getting messy and playing with my holiday supplies as I begin the process of putting my cover and foundation pages together. As many of you know, what I try to do each year is get the basics of my album all put together before December so that I minimize the amount of time I'm actually working on it during that busy time of year. To read a ton more about this project and see past examples check out my December Daily™ compilation page.

IMG_7563

Today I'm going to just share the exterior and interior of the album itself. The actual daily interior pages will be coming most likely on Monday as I'm waiting for a couple more supplies to come in the mail (you can see how it's currently progressing in the image above - it's already pretty thick).

For my cover this year I decided to go with white/cream (love the softness of it) and two really enlarged numbers. Last year I also ended up with white. What can I say, I like it. Because it's basically white on white it's a bit of a challenge to photograph, but you'll get the idea. The chipboard album I'm using is available as part of a December Daily™ kit through Studio Calico. Kits go on sale October 27th/28th.

In addition to the white/cream I also wanted to add some sparkle/gloss and one of my favorite ways to do that is to use UTEE. My full process is listed below.

HOW TO

IMG_7524

1. Print and cut out a "2" and the "5" to make your own stencils (you can do this in any program like Word or Photoshop). I printed these numbers on cardstock so that they would be sturdy enough to use as a stencil. I used a craft knife to cut out the numbers from cardstock. Depending on the size of your album you'll want to adjust the size of the numbers accordingly. I made my #2 larger than my album so it would go off the top and the bottom edge. My #5 is not as tall as the album but it's nice and wide. I used the font Numbers Depot for my #5 and Rosewood for the #2.

IMG_7522

2. Paint two base coats with gesso (essentially white paint) inside and out. After the gesso dried I did two coats of the cream paint from Martha Stewart.

IMG_7534

3. Lay the #2 stencil down on the cover. Open your album flat so you can have the #2 wrap around the spine. Using the stencil, paint the #2 with gesso. I did this as a base under my embossing. You could just emboss right onto the painted cover as well. Let Dry.

4. Follow the same steps for the #5. I chose to position the #5 to the top right of the album. Let dry.

IMG_7525

5. Using the stencils and a pencil, create a line drawing of the number 25 on the back cover and on the inside front cover. I chose to use a pencil because i wanted a fairly faint line drawing. You could use a colored pen, pencil, etc or paint inside the stencils rather than tracing. Lots of options.

IMG_7539

IMG_7540

6. Using the #2 stencil (lay it right on top of the painted #2), turn your embossing inkpad (I use Versamark) upside down and stamp (using the whole pad) all over the stencil. Lift up the stencil and pour UTEE over top. Use a heat gun to set the embossing ink. The above image is what it looks like before melting the UTEE with the heat gun.

IMG_7538

NOTE: I tried something a little different with the UTEE for the #2 - I poured some glitter into my powder before putting it on top of the embossing ink (the glitter was in a little bag - I think it came from a past Jenni Bowlin kit). The end result was to make the #2 have a different texture than the #5 (which was just UTEE). It's rougher and not as smooth. This whole idea came about when I noticed that my UTEE had pretty much already been contaminated with some glitter somewhere along the line. Anything I emboss with that bottle of UTEE ends up with some bits of sparkle.

IMG_7542

7. Repeat the same process for embossing the #5.

IMG_7567

8. Choose a couple of holiday sentiment stamps for the front and inside cover. I used two stamps from my November 2011 Studio AE set (will be available for purchase on November 1). Stamp using Staz On ink (Cherry) to avoid smudging.

IMG_7562

9. After stamping the sentiments I covered/sealed the entire album with Mod Podge. I left the embossed part alone and just painted the Mod Podge around it.

IMG_7565

10. For the spine I used the Santa from this Echo Park chipboard package (included in the Studio Calico kit). I covered the Santa with Glossy Accents to give it a nice finish on top of the chipboard and to keep the small typed piece (December 2011) in place.

OUT-TAKES | WHAT I TRIED FIRST

My first attempt at getting the numbers on my album involved silver spray paint.

IMG_7528

I took the album (painted with the gesso + cream paint) outside and laid down some newspaper.

IMG_7529

Laid the stencil on top.

IMG_7530

With silver metallic spray paint I used the stencils to spray on the #2 and #5.

IMG_7533

I think I need to practice a bit more with the spray paint. I ended up painting over the top of the silver spray paint as it wasn't really the overall look I wanted. It's a nice reminder that you can always paint over the top (just wait until it dries completely).

I'm so excited to see all the different covers and album interiors that I'm sure will be popping up over the next few weeks! It's always so cool to see the results. I've created a Flickr group for anyone interested in sharing their album along the way: December Daily™ 2011 Flickr Group.

I cant believe 79.99 for December Daily Album. I know it includes an album but wow. Always thought of this as a few new supplies and use your stash.

Hi Kay - it's always been that way and continues to be that way. This is not the first time a kit has been offered through a kit club in conjunction with the project (this one happens to be less expensive than the previous kit). I'll end up using some things from the kit and some things from my stash and continue to encourage everyone to choose the option that best works for them. It's about making it work for you -

Wish I could buy chipboard album separate ----- 79.99 for this whole kit.

Seeing that you had to be a Studio Calico member to take advantage of purchasing the kit today, I wanted to join and sign up, but being a non-member I don't even see the kit on their website at all....the current kit they are advertising is Glee and I just thought that perhaps you could post the direct link so that we could see the ordering page or something that shows it...I don't even know what it costs! (though loving December Daily...I'd probably pay more than it may be worth anyway :) ) Thanks!

Ali LOVE the album this year guess I"ll be staying up until midnight so I don't miss out.

Does the modge podge make the album sticky? I seem to have had that problem in the past when using it. Is there a trick to using modge podge?

    Can't wait to get started!!

Can I just say that you scare me with your creativity? When I first saw this post, I skipped it, because I knew I would come away feeling like a creative neanderthal. But the pull was to strong and I relented and you know what? I was right-huge creative void typing this comment! :)

In all seriousness, I really do love your style and somedat aspire to express myself half as well as you do, That will be a happy day. Love the album cover!

    Thanks for all the inspiration.

      Connie,

Just want to agree with Ali here, one step and one day at a time. YOU CAN DO IT !! I use to feel the same way about Ali and others blogs but the more I read of them and see their so creative ideas the more I realize that is for them and works for them. It always feels more right and precious when I make it my own. This counts for all types of crafting/non-crafting. My projects are never as well together as Ali's or her readers and I don't have money to buy all kind of goodies and I can't do anything digital but I what I do have and make the most of is MY HEART AND MY LOVE AND MY STORIES!! To me this is enough and it took me a looong time to get there and be happy but it is so worth it. Last year was my first DD and sure some pages got messed up, some are crooked, some photos are blurry as heck but all I see is the memories, the good, the bad, the sweetest and my family all wrapped up in this album.

So please please don't let this stop you, go forward and do this for you and find what will make YOU happy. The key word here is "YOU" so go have some fun and remember Ali's first attempt didn't come out as planned and she tried again. THAT IS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HER, SHE IS HUMAN JUST LIKE US!!
Hope it was ok to put my 2cents in since I've been there and know how hard it is. Good luck and can't wait to see what you do!!

      10/27/2011

You can do this Connie! One step at a time, one project at a time!

Ok, you may have answered this somewhere else already, but are how are you handling both the Project Life and December Daily? Are you putting anything in PL for the month of December?

I'm so excited, and have been waiting to see what you are going to do. Didn't make it all the way through last year, and haven't yet put it into any form of binding, but really enjoyed what I did anyway, and am excited about this year's!! I joined late last year, so was making it along the way, and got too busy in the last week or so, but that is ok.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are the first blog I check every morning, and you are such an inspiration!!

Hi Tammy - I'll be doing both. December Daily ends up being one story per day - I just pick one and focus on that. For Project Life, since I do more of a week-at-a-glance there will still be lots of little things I can add (there are so many more than one story per day).

Love the new cover and album. Completed my first Daily December last year and loved the whole experience and am looking forward to this year. I would like to know if the album will be available to purchase without the full kit. Thank you for all the inspiration.

This will be my first attempt at the DD and I hope I will actually complete it! I did get the SC kit earlier today...YAY!. This may be one of the most challenging projects I've ever done because I don't have children of my own so will have to be creative with what events/activities I can document. Hoping my nieces and nephews will provide me with opportunities for photos, etc.

(thanks for your links! - followed them & one was too expensive, the other unavailable). I'm not asking you to search, by any means - only if you happen to know of another similar font. Thanks much!! Looking forward to seeing your foundation pages.

So, I joined SC and purchased the December Daily kit. Here is a question: they list the items in the Add-on kit below on the page, but no where that you can click to actually place the order for the add-on. Any suggestion? I'd love to get the extras and hope that by the time I can figure it out, they won't be sold out...

This will be my second DD and I am beyond excited. Last year was the first time I did any "scrapbooking" since my twin boys (my 3rd and 4th children) were born early in 2010. I had lost my mojo and still have a pile of stuff with a pile of stories to tell of all sorts of things, but the busy-ness of life just gets in the way. My DD from last year is such a treasure. Yes, a lot of work, but so worth it and keeping up with it makes it much easier.

Can't wait for all the templates to be completely ready and to receive everything and get that foundation ready for Dec 1! Yay...

I actually ended up sending an email to Studio Calico last night and turning on my computer this morning...already had an answer! New to the Studio Calico kit memberships, I though that each kit included a list of things and the "add-ons" were additional paper and goodies which would go along and co-ordinate...now I get it! The DD is an add-on kit to the regular monthly kits SC offers!

So excited to get mine. Yeah, $79 may be a little high, but last year's DD cleared my stash (also because I was on maternity leave) and I only bought the overlays and a few other goodies you had created. This year was my "treat" and from the photos, it looks like there is a lot of stuff!

      Can't wait!!!

This will be my third year doing it and each year I improve. I am going to be very well prepared to go into December because last year I got to Dec 6 and then the wheels came off. I actually just finished my December Daily 2010 a month ago. Thank you Ali for the years and years of inspiration you have provided. Love the cover and the large numbers on the inside with the small sentiment. You rock.

Love this! May have to add some UTEE to mine. I used some Pearl Glimmer mist over my white paint and it is a little hard to see, but I also kind of like it that way. Anyways, so excited about Dec Daily. I stayed up until 3 last weekend playing and paid for it all week, but it was oh so fun! Am going to have to pass on the kit and use my stash but really love the album.
