December Daily™ 2011 | Day Ten

Welcome to December Daily™ 2011 | Day Ten.

Hello photo I took of the kids & Santa and hello "official" Santa photo.

Still feeling lucky I took a few before they told me I wasn't allowed to take photos.

Here's a look at my process for today:

I started this one off knowing I wanted a full page photo and wanted to try cutting some of my Christmas Quote Strips with the Silhouette. Worked great after a bit of cleaning up the traced file in Silhouette Studio (opened the png file, traced the image, deleted the excess cut lines, cut).

After using the Silhouette I decided to emboss with the white opaque Zing.

Actually I tried the black glitter zing first:

Which was super cool but the white looked better on the photo.

I stapled the phrase with Tim's Tiny Attacher.

Another option, not using the Silhouette, is to simply add the png file right on your photo in Photoshop before printing. The result would be something like this (I adjusted the opacity just a bit to make it see-through):

For the insert I added two photos (2.5 inch x 3.5 inch) that I adhered back to back and slipped into the divided page protector.

I added a couple word stickers to each photo before slipping them to the album.

Behind the "1" and the "0" I added journaling:

I thought about covering these with paper before journaling but just went for it to save a couple steps.

For the second page I used the "official" Santa photo:

I cropped off the advertising, added a strip of Hambly white pattern paper, a couple more Christmas word stickers, and cut out one of the chipboard calendars from the Studio Calico kit for journaling.

Some zig-zag stitching was added along the seam where the photo and pattern paper meet.

Loving that my parents were able to be here yesterday and today.

Lovely! I think I'll have to invest in a Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher... Unless Santa brings it! I don't have a blog, I don't have a book ready yet but I am taking photos and journaling every day so that when the holidays are done, I can relive this experience! Thank you again for the inspiration!

Loving the word strips - I didn't know I could do that with the Silhouette and am excited to try it now! The pictures of the kids are great. Love how intently they are talking to Santa.

Ali, love the photo you took of your kids and Santa! I think it's completely adorable with Santa's striped socks and your daughter's polka dotted ones! I also love that they are looking at him. What a wonderful capture...SO much better than the official photo! Your album is just gorgeous!

I love these photos and that Anna wasn't afraid this year. She looks so cute and little beside Santa and Simon. Happy that your mom and dad were there to share the joy.

We have the same Santa every year and I try to sneak a few photos of my own too. Enjoy your Sunday!

So sweet how Simon is a buffer for Anna with Santa. My youngest son took a long time to warm up to the big guy and my oldest would be the moderator. Great memory that your photo brought back. I am loving how the transparencies look all lined up in your book. I want to try that next year. Fun!

What great Santa pictures! I like the way they use a couch instead of the normal chair. Anna is so cute. It is fun to watch her grow through your blog. Thank you again for the inspiration.

I love this page.It annoys me that even when you are buying Santa photos they wont let you take shots of them just talking. Its not fair.

Hi Ali! Your photo of the kids with Santa is so sweet! We took our son to see Santa yesterday too, and he cried. He's only 1, and we knew it was going to happen. Oh well, it's a memory regardless. I just want to say that I love the connection you capture between your mom and Anna. Loving your album and reading your posts every morning, have a wonderful Sunday.

I love how the "she's loved" (in the picture of your mom and daughter) could refer to either one of them. You can tell in the picture that they are both looking at each other with such love.

Ali, what program to you use to print your pictures to fit the size of the book. I am trying to set my picture up to print 6.25 x 8.25 and none of the programs I have allow me to do that. I have tried my kodak printer software, photoscape and one other which the name escapes me right now. So for now my photos in my book are 4x6 or 5x7, but I would like to print them bigger if I knew how. I have photo shop elements 5.0 but haven't figured that out either.

Hi Sherry - I'm not sure about most of the programs you mention but you should be able to do it in Elements 5.0 (not totally sure about that specific version). When I open a photo in Photoshop and select the "crop tool" (looks like two cross-hairs) there is a little menu bar along the top of the window where I can enter the desired width, height, and resolution. I put in 6 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall, and 300 for the resolution. Then I use the crop tool by clicking on the image and dragging to include what I want (because I've set the width, height, and resolution it will maintain those proportions when it's crops) and then I hit return and it crops the image.

I've also got a bunch of tutorials for getting started using your computer in scrapbooking available here: http://aliedwards.com/2010/01/getting-started-digital-scrapbooking.html

    Hi Ali!

I always love seeing your kids with Santa
    - he is so, so cool. Wish he would head up to our neck of the woods - love how casual and approachable he is :)

On a different note... wondering about your photos this time around... I know that you usually shoot landscape style... are you still doing that or are your large, full page photos for December Daily portrait style?? or are they just enlargements of whichever photo you are using? Would love to know.

    Thanks so much!
    A.

They are still almost all landscape. It's really rare that I would take a vertical shot. I'm just cropping them to be vertical.

Ali, I so love that you got in trouble taking pictures of Santa! My big kids are always yelling at me to put my camera away. I call my pictures stealth pictures....no flash, hold it low, click.
I laughed out loud that they told you that you weren't allowed to take pictures. ( It seems to me that if you buy their pictures, what difference does it make if you take some!)
Santa, obviously didn't know who he was talking to!

    Hi Ali,
so great to see all the techniques and the fun you and your family have in preparation for Christmas. What's suprising though is that Anna's and Simon's dad are missing in all of your pictures. What's happening?

Hope everything is allright in your family.

Thank you for being such an inspiration
