December Daily™ 2011 | Day Two

Welcome to December Daily™ | Day Two.

If you are new to my site, welcome! Consider yourself invited to check out my Welcome page for more information about what happens around here. If this is your first time reading about December Daily™ I recommend beginning with my compilation page. There you will find links, tutorials, and inspiration from 2007 through 2011.

Lots happening today but this is the story I wanted to share.

Love this girl. I'm pretty sure she's going to have the same contagious joy for the holidays as Simon. I've seen it already and it makes me so, so happy.

Here's a bit about my process for Day Two:

I opened the photo in Photoshop and cropped it to 5.5 inches wide x 6.75 inches tall. When I printed it out I ended up trimming a bit (about 1/8 inch) off the length.

I added one of my Merry Banners, adjusted the opacity to about 80%, and used the T tool to add journaling (Garamond font) directly on the photo before printing here at home on an Epson Photo Stylus R2000 onto Epson Premium Photo Paper Glossy (8.5x11).

After printing I knew I wanted to add a little something. I went with some little Jenni Bowlin Chipboard Stars.

I embossed those little stars with the Red Zing Metallic (which is actually purple and not red). The image above is before I used the heat gun on them. Always a little tougher to photograph pages at night.

Here's the full view:

I attached the stars with simple pewter mini brads and made sure that one went off the edge. I like when they go off the edge.

The sweet pink ribbon is from Crate Paper.

The spread (a right side and a left side - the image of Anna above is the right) includes one of the chipboard calendars. Right now I'm just loosely attaching that with a Smash clip onto Hambly paper + transparency.

On the back of the chipboard circle (the front is a #2 and it's stitched onto the half sheet of transparency) I punched a piece of the white Hambly paper (using a Marvy extra giga circle punch) and embossed one of my stamps (25 Moments) using Red Zing Metallic (again, which is actually purple). I stitched around the circle with my machine.

I envision that most days the spreads will be more linked together than this one was because I already had something in the left side.

COOL LINK | I received an email from Sarah K. who put together a set of instructions on how to modify a 3-ring binder for this album (and the idea could be used for any sort of album you might want to modify. Check it out here.

I am curious as to what you are writting on the calendar. I'm not sure if I want to just write the big events on certain days and leave the rest blank. Or write a small phrase to describe the photo of each day.

Thanks for sharing your wondering album with us!

Hi Brooke - right now I'm just writing one little thing that happened each day. Day one says "opened advent calendars" and day two says "hung lights." It would also be cool to use it as a gratitude calendar and write one thing you are thankful for each day.

As always, thanks for everything you do!!!

What a great page Ali, Anna is such a cutie. I have a question (you've probably answered before) but, I'm sending my photos off to be printed, what size should I print so that they fit in the 5.5x6.75 box? Thanks!

Well, I'd probably print them on an 8x10. You can either size your photo exactly and place it on an 8x10 background (that way they won't shrink or adjust it) or you can print a full 8x10 and then crop it - knowing you will be cropping it.

Ali, this page of Anna is so adorable. I love how you used those new banners and just added the text to the image. Also wanted to mention to anyone still looking for an album for December Daily, that we are memory keepers offers a 5.5x8.5 leather album that would be perfect for DD. Archivers Annex is now offering it http://www.archiversannex.com/default.aspx?PageID=21&CategoryID=92&ProductID=24111&utm_source=google&utm_medium=base&utm_campaign=shopping. The templates may need to be resized just a bit, but still a great option.

    Hi Ali,
I have a quick question I hope you might be able to help me with. I am trying to size a photo in photoshop to 6x8, and then put my journaling directly on it. The problem is that when I go to print the photo a warning comes up saying it will print at 220 DPI. I went ahead and printed it anyway and it looks terrible (out of focus, kind of blurry) I cant figure out what I'm doing wrong but Im hoping it is something I can fix easily.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Hi Annie - are you making your photo 300 dpi before cropping it? Tell me a bit more about your process so I can help troubleshoot.

I think I figured it out. I was emailing myself the photo and that was somehow limiting what I could do with it. I used a flash drive to transfer it instead and I was able to do everything just fine. But thanks so much for your fast reply! Its my first year participating in DD, I also did A Week In the Life this year and loved it so thank you so much!!

My daughter - who has just turned 8 - and who I haven't really shared the December Daily project with, but who scrapbooks with me often; started a December Journal / Diary! I'm thinking I'm going to scan one of her pages and put in in the December Daily album.

Ali, such a great picture and story.

For those not printing at home, can you help with a question? I'd like to print a photo 5.5 X 6.75. In PSE I understand how to crop my picture to that size, but then what do I do? Do I create a canvas that is a typical print size (say 8 X 10) and paste my 5.5 X 6.75 picture onto that? Have it printed at 8 X 10 and then trim? I think I know what I need to do conceptually, it's the creating a seperate canvas and pasting my cropped photo into it that has me a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated!!!

Hi Jennifer - yes, that's exactly what I would do. To create a new canvas go to File/New and set it to 8x10 at 300dpi for the resolution. You should then be able to use the Move Tool (black arrow) to drag and drop your photo onto the 8x10 canvas. Save that file as a JPG for uploading to your developer.

Gorgeous photo and I love the way you used the stars. I have a photo I want to use but it needs something on top of it -- I think your digi overlay on this page will be perfect for that photo. So glad you used it for today's page!
