AE Inspiration | Ira Glass On The Creative Process

I came across this video on Sabrina Ward Harrison's facebook page last night thought it was worth sharing.

Also saw on there that she has a new book/guided journal that's available for pre-order called And The Story Is Happening.

Totally love that title - add that book to my list.

That's GOLD. It's good to hear that we have good taste and that through perseverance we will close the gap. Words of wisdom. Thanks for spreading the good advice, Ali.

Wow! That is something I really needed to hear! I am one of those people who try things out for a bit and if my work is not what I want it to be I give up.

It's so good to hear that others whose work I admire may have struggled with their own expectations of what their work SHOULD look like! I just figured some people were gifted at art and people like me would never be good at it.

Makes me want to perservere and keep working on the creative things I love to do!

Love this. I just had a conversation with my 12 year old son about being good at making things out of clay. He's been introduced to that at school and was disappointed with what he produced because he has such good design instincts. I told him he needs to give himself permission to do some not so good stuff while he is learning about new mediums and techniques. It's OK. It's expected. It's part of learning and getting really good at doing something.

I have to show him this video.

I was already in love with Ira Glass, so this is just another reason to swoon.

On this topic, I thought I'd share some fun facts about Ira and myself:

    1. We share a birthday.
    2. He is my favorite celeb sighting while I was living in NYC, and the only one that I sort of lost my cool over. I yelled out his name out before I realized what I was doing. He gave me a strange look and then I sheepishly just said, "I'm a big fan of your show."

Coincidences happen for a reason, don't they?? I just read this a few hours ago. Really.

Watching the video sent chills running up and down my spine.
Or maybe the chills came from my cold fingers and toes?
    Nah, it was the coincidence.

Sabrina ward Harrison is such an inspiration. I have all 3 of her books and the last one: The True and the Questions - the art journal where you make it yours.

I was so delighted that she's coming out with a new book, but honestly was a bit disappointed that it's another 'fill-in-the-blanks" journal format and not a art journal book on her current life, accomplishments and struggles. She is such a rich personality, I wish she shared more of her life. I'm still getting the new preorder book, but just wishing that it was another one of the "Spilling Open" calibur.
Thanks for the link Ali. I totally relate to being "in the phase" of self doubt and not living up to my aspirations. The answer truly is: "Make lots of work": terrible work, so-so work to get to the best work of one's life.

This is fantastic! So wish I'd seen/heard this years ago!

For so many years I'd been in the beginner stage of doing creative work - full of so many ideas & as he said "good taste", but full of so much more self doubt that I hadn't even started much. It's only been the last couple years that I got the inspiration from a crafty group of friends I met online, from discovering blogs like yours & Stacy Julian's & countless others, from discovering Paperclipping and from taking online classes.

Before all this social media, I looked at work in professional publications and it was intimidating. There was NO WAY I could live up to that quality so why try. Now so much is shared & you realize all those crafty people are just as human as you, they have bad days and bad designs and occasional doubts. The difference I've now come to realize is that the sucessful creative people just keep trying. They do LOTS of work. I have you Ali in part to thank for this realization. It's very empowering!

Love this. I so needed to hear this right now! Life is so crazy busy. I have so many ideas in my head of what I want to do, I just cannot get to doing it. I love the part, "put yourself on a deadline." I just made myself a schedule today and am hoping to stick with it.

It also reminds me of "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell. Talking about doing a volume of work-I think he said in that book the "experts" do like 10,000 hours of practice? Maybe that's why the photo a day and other projects can be helpful. Anyways, thanks for the inspiration. I really love the 52 creative lifts too. Thanks Ali!
