Project Life 2012 | Week Three

Welcome to Project Life 2012 | Week Three.

It's really hard to beat having a pile of just-printed photos.

My routine these last few weeks has been to print all my photos on Monday (my weeks go Monday to Sunday). I look back over the photos taken in the past week and hit print on whichever ones I like best (or whichever ones catch my attention).

Some of these in the photo above didn't end up making it into my spread this week. I'm thinking I'll just add them to next week.

Here's a look at Week Three:

Being a birthday week I expected to have at least one insert to accommodate the number of photos. I ended up with two as you will see below.

I have to say that I'm really loving the Clementine journal cards. I feel like there is more space to write compared with last year (and I feel like I'm taking advantage of that so far).

We began our week with a dusting of snow (and that was it - just a dusting). On the top right photo I added a Hello Winter Brushes & Stamps ("heart snow") by cutting it out with the Silhouette and then stapling it with the Tiny Attacher. On the bottom left photo I added some word art from my Sibling Brushes & Stamps. The photo of me and the big white balloon was a self-portrait for the February One Little Word prompt.

I also included one Instax Mini photo out of front door into the snow.

The first insert for this week uses the Design G Page Protectors. I decided to use this entire insert for things related to Simon's birthday.

On the kraft piece of paper are the names of the kids Simon invited - he and Chris worked on the invitations together.

I used my Silhouette for two more things. The January frame is from the Hello Life Boxes Vol.2 package and the number 10 card is from my 3x4 Rounded Number Corner Cards package. Behind the #10 card I added a piece of Hambly Studios 12x12 Overlay Moustaches.

That "big day" date stamp is part of the new Dear Lizzy line from American Crafts (love it).

On the back I included a pirate napkin from the party. On top of the napkin I added Moss Notched Corners Labels from Paper Source and journaled about the party right on top.

I blurred the faces of the kids faces who attended the party.

The second insert is a We R Memory Keepers 8.5x11. Love this treasure hunt that Chris came up with - especially the part about the notorious pirate George.

On the back of this second insert I included the cards he received and a copy of the invitation.

After all that I really love how this page is just a bunch of words and photos. Photos + journal cards + a few little labels to identify photos. Love how this can be anything you want it to be.

Last year when I would your weekly layouts for project life I would get mad at myself since I wasn't doing project life. But this year I bought the core kit and have been loving the project! Now when I see your weekly layouts I get inspired! I'm doing my weeks Saturday to Friday so I have time to finish the weekly layouts over the weekend or else I don't think I would finish it! I'm also using all of my old supplies as well, such a good way to use up your stash of goodies!

How would you recommend making sure to include stuff for my boyfriend who I live with as well? When he saw the first week he said oh it's about your week not our week. Even though I had pictures of him and journaling about how he is brewing his own beer. Since he won't journal I'm trying to write down stuff he says about his day but I really him to feel Like it's our album and not mine.

Hi Karin - as I was reading your comment about your boyfriend I was thinking to myself that he might end up wanting to write. I'd say invite him to jot things down (give him a chance and make it easy for him - you can always hand him a card and say, "will you write about such and such for me please?"), don't get disappointed if he doesn't right away (or ever), and just keep doing what you are doing (developing a practice of documentation).

I guess I have never really thought about having my husband help me with PL by asking him to do some journaling. I don't think he would! But I do involve him by asking him questions sometimes for details so I am sure to get what I journal right...and I think he enjoys that. He and our son like to look throught our PL albums from time to time. My husband laughs at me for what I take pictures of sometimes to include in PL!!! He'll say, "is that the picture of the day?" I have had my son do some journaling, he's 5 and learning to write, but it's a good reminder to include him more so we can see how his writing skills develop over time.

awesome. awesome. awesome. love birthday party weekends. i have a question regarding the instax mini. my momma bought me one for christmas...so i could take it on my hawaiian cruise and do a "trip on the go" album. haven't had to take film with me through the airport in forever...is there anything special i need to do?

Hi Denise - the first time I flew with it I wanted it hand-checked and the US airports were fine with that. The airport in Athens would not hand-check and I had to send it through the machine and it was just fine. Since then I've carried it in my carry-on and my checked baggage and it was fine both ways.

I love how Chris is still involved (both with Christmas and Simon's birthday). I'm sure this may be difficult sometimes, but I'm glad you are both making the effort for those 2 beautiful kids you have. All your effort will pay off in the long run.

I confess.... The exciting thing about today's post for me...it gave me several ideas to include in care packages for my daughter. A Naval Officer who is currently hunting pirates off the coast of Africa. You just never know where you'll find inspiration!

I have a question about the way you organize your weeks. I also go from Mon-Sun, but I have such a hard time when the weeks blend into another month. Like how there are two days of January left on a Mon and Tues. Do you include those in the previous week to keep Jan all together?? Or just keep with the Mon-Sun flow and don't worry so much about keeping months separate? I've been tossing this around in my brain trying to decide what to do, and just need some suggestions. (I hope my explanation makes sense!)

Hi Ali...love all your pictures...just curious..in the pile of printed pictures at the upper left corner there is a picture of Anna with what looks like white at the right hand side of it and a thin border all around..it just looked bigger than the instax photos and wondered if that's something you printed, or if it's from a polaroid or something...I just liked it because it looks to be the same size as the others (4x6). have a great week !!

Hi Mary - that's an instagram photo printed on 4x6 paper. My instagram photos get auto-uploaded to my desktop computer via Photostream. In this case I opened that photo in Photoshop and re-sized it to 4x4 at 300dpi and printed on the 4x6.

Mary, I have been playing around with different sizes of prints on my printer all using 4x6. Check out my latest blog entry regarding printing faux instax. I link to Eve's blog which I found off Ali's page. I love the faux look of poloroid! It looks like its an Instax for that photo though.

It helps to see how you embraced Simon's day as ALL his. In my most honest self, I maybe would not have embraced his special treat -- and here -- I see it was perfect. Just perfect. You live as an example to me, Ali. Love the PL - but love your example of mothering choice even more. I am learning to let my children lead moreso. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for all the inspiration! This is my first year doing it (like so many others) and I love how such a simple product creates such a diversity of outputs. I have always loved scrapbooking and I've been in it through many variations (I started in high school back in the 1990s)...even dabbled in some mixed-media which I love.

Anyway, while I still love to do layouts no other project I have ever done has had such immense payback with minimal effort.

Thanks for sharing your PL spread each week!

I haven't Dee. I love the idea of doing a single 12x12 photo that can be broken up into all the slots - similar to Kelly Purkey's title page. I just put them on the shelf and called it good :)
