Knee Deep

I'm currently knee deep in the stuff of life.

The fun stuff like prepping tax files for the accountant, scheduling doctor's appointments, attending mediation meetings, developing content for a new 4+ week class for Big Picture (that actually is fun), encouraging my kids to eat their vegetables, thinking about the how/why/when of telling the more challenging stories of our lives when you are in the middle of it, day-dreaming about spring break (also actually fun), and trying to keep George the cat off the kitchen counters.

It's pretty darn crazy right now, but it's mine.

Knee deep...sometimes it feels more like drowning in it. But thank you Ali for reminding me that no matter how crazy it gets, it is mine.

Knee deep in quicksand sometimes! I bought a daycare that had way more problems than the previous owner mentioned. Been thinking how to tell those stories; wait till later when I have perspective or tell them now raw feelings and all. I've started to tell them now -raw emotion and all. That's my life at this moment and I want to remember and reflect on how its changed. See this time and compare it to how much better things get. Even though now is "knee deep" time I want to remember these "real" moments too.

Cat off the counter? A spray bottle with water works! After awhile just setting it on the counter kept Louise off, and now my counters are cat free.

I was gonna say that also. It doesn't take very many times and they get the hint.

    Have a great day Ali!

Sounds a lot like my lists. Good luck with George the Cat. If you find a solution that works, let me know! The blessing of a cat that jumps on the counters is that they are always cleaned up after meals. Our boy would eat off any dishes or food left behind and then we would spend a fortune at the vet. Somebody recommended a spray product called Boundaries to me. We tried it for a bit with some success but it didn't work long-term. We also tried tin foil with no luck. I've waived the white flag of surrender.

About George the cat, sounds like he is the kind of cat who likes to be up high versus down low hiding. There is a great show on one of the animal channels called "my cat from h*ll." I bet they would suggest you get George a perch; some place high up that he can sit and see you guys and the world outside... You might try that and see if that distracts him from your counters. I love your blog Ali! You are so inspirational. :-)

I agree with the comments about the spray bottle! Glad that you can verbalize the good, the not so good and the whatever in life! Pull one leg at a time out of the "sand" pit...=)

Spray bottle of water should do the trick. When you're not home...you'll never know!

It sometimes seems debatable whether it is any consolation or not, but deep down I think it does help to know that from time to time we all have this crazy (maybe not-so-fun) stuff going on. I've been facing this in my PL recently.. I tend to shy away from sharing all the yucky stuff that pops up but life can't be all sunshine and rainbows all the time. Hoping things calm down for you, Ali.

Thanks for the affirmation that I am normal. At my house Henry George and Jack Charles seem to have a magnetic attraction to the counters. Jack Charles just goes with the water--if that is what comes with the counter so be it. Their loving spirit and curiosity is what I try to embrace.

Good luck with it all :) While it can feel overwhelming from inside the middle, I love taking a step back when it's over to look for the happy moments.

And life is so much... more! with a cat!!

Hi Ali, I hear you loud and clear on that one. I am swimming with to do lists, tax papers and appointments for the kids and myself. We have another 3 weeks to get through here in Australia before we can breath again for a 2 week break from school. I have been getting on top of my paperwork for the past week and am onto the last major task... it's never ending.

I don't have a cat, but even my Golden Retriever responded to the water bottle technique! Now I just have to show him the bottle and he behaves.

Remember that you are not alone and savor the moments!

Cat off the counter?...what worked for us was the squirt bottle filled with water. You only have to actually squirt the cat two or three times and then you just have to squirt close to him and the noise will cause him to jump off. Our cat no longer gets on the kitchen counters or the dinner table.

I couldn't possibly be of any help on anything except the cat on the counter issue. We bought some canisters of a spray called PsssCat at Petsmart that operate on a battery (has an ON/OFF switch) & it emits a fine non-toxic spray when anything or anyone crosses the fairly wide-angle vision of the "eye." It has deterred our cat from getting on the counters or any number of places because she is totally freaky about water. Abby has a mind like a steel trap, so we don't even have to use them much anymore & rarely even turn them on. She sees the canister & stays away. She is actually much smarter about them than we are, as I'm sure we got sprayed many more times than she did....lol!

That canister works well! I only wish I had a picture of the cat jumping straight in the air the first time she went by it!:-)

Hi Ali- I am a small business too. I use quickbooks and swear by it. You run three reports for your accountant every year and send those to him or her and it is a piece of cake. Every year I am astonished how easy it is. Thought I would pass it along. Good luck!!!

You wouldn't think so, but hearing your "ordinary" life is inspiring to me as I don't take yearly trips abroad or teach classes or even go to Disneyland--all that is behind me now--it used to happen, but not now. I sit here at home with the "ordinariness" of photographing catkins on my pussywillow or celebrating the 100th birthday of the Oreo cookie (yesterday) or purchasing a shamrock plant for March and I am reminded that not everyone's life is full of HUGE happenings. Thanks for being you, Ali.

You are going good Ali, keep UP the good work. Try a spray bottle with water in it on George, just spritz him a little, he will get the message quick.
