Week In The Life 2012 | Tuesday Words + Photos

Week In The Life 2012 | Tuesday

NUMBER OF PHOTOS FOR TUESDAY | around 80 (only a couple on my iphone)

A couple things:

This is not a competition. It's not about the number of photos. It's not about how much you write or don't write. It's about capturing and celebrating the details of your own life - for yourself, for your family, etc.

I didn't feel like writing much today. I want you to remember, and I keep reminding myself, that this project can be what you want it to be. It can evolve and morph over the course of the week as you find your own rhythm and routine.

Today I thought a lot about creating a sustainable pace. In between dealing with some Simon stuff and some mortgage refinance stuff and some health insurance stuff and some work stuff, I thought about composition. I really took intentional photos today - not photos of everything that was happening (skipped a couple big things like needing to go to Simon's school for an impromptu meeting in the middle of the day) - but photos that represented the flow and rhythm of the day.

Here's a look at some of my Tuesday photos:

I wanted to share how I am approaching capturing my words this week. This is my third year playing along with WITL. I love, seriously L.O.V.E., this project. The past two years I've kept a Word document up on my computer (I am a stay-at-home mom) and throughout the day would go back and forth documenting the goings on. With that approach I was getting great documentation for each day and loved it. Loved the details and everything I was able to capture. Last year, however, a few days in and got to be a bit stressful for me. I kept up the same approach with the Word document for the duration of the week, but didn't include quite so much or maybe captured what I could when it was happening and then expanded on things after kids were in bed.

This year I wanted to keep an open mind to what I was going to do. My hubby, hearing my struggle, downloaded me the AudioMemos free app for my iPad. It is spectacular. Yesterday I went back and forth to an audio memo four or five times throughout the day, was able to do a total verbal dump of everything that was going on and then last night spent time typing it up. Love it, love it, love it and am pretty sure it'll be my go to way of documenting this week. I would recommend it (or another similar app or program) for anyone having trouble finding time to capture words this week.

Thanks for a great project, Ali! Thank you for sharing your pictures and weekly journey with us and inspiring and encouraging us to document our own life along with you.

Dragon and similar "dictation to Word documents" programs have been around and used by the medical profession for over a decade. I would guess that by now they are easily affordable.

Oh cool - Catherine at Design Editor was tweeting with me yesterday about an app that takes dictation - you talk into it and it turns it into a google doc. I thought that sounded cool too - like that it takes the step out of typing it up. Called "Dragon Dictation"

update: I cannot get good transcription back from Dragon Dictation, so I am curious to hear if you try it, Ali, or if anyone else here has success with it. Does anyone have another one to try? What is also the bummer besides the transcription being poorer than poor is that I don't see that it's recording my voice for me to listen back to, so I'd really be lost if I relied solely on this. I'm going back to my AudioMemos app in the morning, but would love to hear if there is something else worth trying.

Thanks for the suggestion, Ali. I have been loving using this app again today, but love the idea of help with the transcription portion, so I am going to download Dragon Dictation right now (its free, too, which I gotta love!). I am sure the transcription won't be perfect, but fixing it up should take less time than me typing up the whole thing on my own.

You're right, M. My hubby works in healthcare, which is why he thought of finding a voice recording app to use this week for week in the life. Looking forward to trying out this one that Ali is mentioning to see if it helps me with the transcription.

Love your pics, Ali, and the way you used just a word or 2 to describe each one. It's simple and to the point. And I agree that it's not a race to see who gets the most photos. I decided from the start how I wanted my project to be laid out and know that I only need 17 photos at most per day, so even though I've only gotten between 40-70 pics each day, I know it's more than enough, and I to be honest, it makes it much easier to pick favourites to use, without being completely overwhelmed

I just started yesterday. Am doing only Instagram. Our days are pretty much the same one day to the next. So i've been taking different photos of each little bit. Some days hubby getting ready, some of the kids getting ready at the same time only on a different day. There's only so many pics I can take of the same route to work everyday, so I've stopped to look around at the traffic lights. I'm seeing things I didn't see before because I'm paying attention. My iPod and clipboard are my trusty companions. Don't have a clue about putting the project together, but something will happen when I need it too.

PS - love the little gold (?) flats you had on in one of the photos.

These are all lovely photos and capture your life so well. The one which stood out to me is the "pretending" photo. What a special reminder this will be of those days when our children are young. I think you captured the creativity of a child and the love of a mother. I LOVE it! For me, I feel like I'm falling behind, all day yesterday I was running errands and about all I got was photos of the places I went. And, all I'm doing today is homeschooling, which I photographed on Monday. I feel like I"m in a photo rut. I'm trying to think of whether these are photos we will want to look back on. Maybe I need to think out of the box some. At any rate, I'm plugging along :)

My perspective is that the ones you'll love to look back on are the ones that are the most basic - the simple stuff - what rooms look like (with or without people in them), favorite spots, basic routine things.

I realized that this year's project will be a lot more about me than previous ones. As the kids get older, I just don't spend as much time with them (plus they're in a very "don't take my picture" mode right now). Love the freedom to make this project what I want.

So many emotions going through me right now as I "feel" your week, the stated and the unstated, and I both rejoice and struggle through mine ...I am not only very grateful for this project but for the sharing of it. It is hard to explain but this sense of community in all you are sharing is actually sustaining so much in me right now. Thank you.

I am totally enjoying this project and I am not even doing it. I find myself not wanting to work but rather sit here with a cup of tea and read others entries and find inspiration and ideas in others ... when I am done the course I am working on (in 1 month) I am seriously considering tackling this project. It seems like such a great way to document the everyday and everything. Thank you to everyone who is participating with Ali and sharing a week in their lives :)

These are just precious Ali, what awesome shots you got thru the day of Miss Anna, love love them. Even Simon with his hand up makes me smile and reminds me of my Sam right now, great job with the words for these. Love the ones of you, so nice with the light coming in.

I agree about the number of photos, high or low it's the story that counts. Having said that I think having a lot of photos yesterday captured my whole day pretty well and I won't do this every day but it's great to see the actual whole day in photos, want to collage it!!

Sorry to see that Anna is sick today, who would have thought after all those smiles yesterday, that's what happens though. Hugs to both of you and feel better wishes soon.

Thanks again Ali for this project, so thankful for it!!

Those photos of Simon with his hands in front of his face will become more frequent. Both of my kids grew up with me taking lots of photos but now...getting my oldest (16) in front of the camera is out of the question. He doesn't want his picture taken and goes into hiding when I bring my camera out. This is making Project Life more difficult for me. I have more than enough pictures of his shoes, bookbag, uniforms (on hangers), vehicle, messy room - would love to see pictures of braces, haircuts and things of that nature but he says no so I don't push - that's not enjoyable for either of us.

I, too, recognized my older son in those pics of Simon. It really made me laugh! My son Alex, now 13, has decided recently that he doesn't want his photo taken anymore. He puts his hand up in front of his face or just hides altogether from the camera. I've had to start being sneaky and take pictures of him while he is engaged in some other activity. I miss, though, those straight-on, full-face, huge-grin photos. Luckily my younger two children still love to have their pictures taken and often give me the cheesiest smiles ever!

I'm not doing witl as I have so much project life to catch up on, but am loving following yours. This it what I love so much about this style of memory keeping. It's so much more meaningful and emotion filled than perfect posed family shots. I can fill up with tears just watching Anna and Chris greeting each other, so how much more poignant these moments are when it's your own family is unmeasurable. Thanks again for your sparkling inspiration to us all. Hannah :)

Some great pictures. It's interesting that Simon is getting to where he is not wanting his picture taken and feels free to express it with his hand instead of some other way.
