Daring Greatly Giveaway

I'm super excited to support my friend Brené Brown today as she launches her new book Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead.

Just the title gets me excited.

GIVEAWAY | One person will receive the new book Daring Greatly by Brené Brown and a Daring Greatly T-shirt.

I met Brené five years ago at a gathering of women brought together by Kelly Rae Roberts and Jen Lemen. We became fast friends when we roomed together as we chatted about our families, our work, our childhood (we were both swimmers and life guards), and our type-A personalities.

Earlier this summer Brené and I held our breaths & practiced bravery together as we took off on an adventure in an 8-seater airplane for a vacation with our girlfriends.

Bottom line, she's one of my favorite people and I'm super thankful we were put in that room together five years ago.

Here's a bit about her professionally:

Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.

Her 2010 TEDxHouston talk on the power of vulnerability is one of most watched talks on TED.com, with approximately 5 million views. She gave the closing talk, Listening to Shame, at the 2012 TED Conference in Long Beach.

Here's the description of her new book:

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable, or to dare greatly. Whether the arena is a new relationship, an important meeting, our creative process, or a difficult family conversation, we must find the courage to walk into vulnerability and engage with our whole hearts.

In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on twelve years of research, she argues that vulnerability is not weakness, but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection. The book that Dr. Brown’s many fans have been waiting for, Daring Greatly will spark a new spirit of truth—and trust—in our organizations, families, schools, and communities.

Check out the trailer for her new book:

It's on my nightstand and I can't wait to begin.

Here's an excellent review I read yesterday which will give you more insight into some of the themes covered in the book.

When we got together in July Brené asked if I'd be interested in doing some handwriting for a parenting manifesto that's part of Daring Greatly.

YEP.

You can download this 8x10 manifesto (and others on leadership and engaged feedback) by clicking here.

I also wanted to mention that there are Daring Greatly t-shirts. $10 from the purchase of each shirt goes to charity: water. The goal is for the Wholehearted community to raise $15,000 to fund a tap for 230 people in Rwanda. Click here to track the progress at charity: water.

This friendship you cherish had the hidden benefit of trickling down to those of us who follow you; I began reading Brene Brown when you wrote about the first retreat. Her books are to be read and re-read. Thank you both.

    Ali,
Thanks for using your blog to call our attention to issues that concern us as people, women, mothers and daughters, friends and, oh yeah, scrapbookers.

This reminds me of a "Baby Bill of Rights" my mom put in my childhood scrapbook. It was a manifesto of sorts of what each baby/child should get. I still have it in the scrapbook! This is a fabulous story of serendipitous meetings that change a life. I had a similar one when I went to South America for a year as a volunteer. Some of my current best friends were made there and even on the plane ride. Life is spectacularly smashing sometimes.

Brene Brown is amazing - I had the chance to participate in a two day talk she gave this last May. Her blog and earlier books and her new Daring Greatly newletter are all tools that support our courage and our embracing vulnerability. Thanks so much for the opportunity to win a copy of Daring Greatly.

If I'm picked, please pick again - it's ordered and on it's way here already.

I just wanted to let you know this was *exactly* the message I needed to hear this morning to break through the building fears (which must be the vulnerability factor). Can't wait to get it and start reading!
