Daring Greatly Giveaway
I'm super excited to support my friend Brené Brown today as she launches her new book Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead.
Just the title gets me excited.
GIVEAWAY | One person will receive the new book Daring Greatly by Brené Brown and a Daring Greatly T-shirt.
I met Brené five years ago at a gathering of women brought together by Kelly Rae Roberts and Jen Lemen. We became fast friends when we roomed together as we chatted about our families, our work, our childhood (we were both swimmers and life guards), and our type-A personalities.
Earlier this summer Brené and I held our breaths & practiced bravery together as we took off on an adventure in an 8-seater airplane for a vacation with our girlfriends.
Bottom line, she's one of my favorite people and I'm super thankful we were put in that room together five years ago.
Here's a bit about her professionally:
Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.
Her 2010 TEDxHouston talk on the power of vulnerability is one of most watched talks on TED.com, with approximately 5 million views. She gave the closing talk, Listening to Shame, at the 2012 TED Conference in Long Beach.
Here's the description of her new book:
Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable, or to dare greatly. Whether the arena is a new relationship, an important meeting, our creative process, or a difficult family conversation, we must find the courage to walk into vulnerability and engage with our whole hearts.
In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on twelve years of research, she argues that vulnerability is not weakness, but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection. The book that Dr. Brown’s many fans have been waiting for, Daring Greatly will spark a new spirit of truth—and trust—in our organizations, families, schools, and communities.

It's on my nightstand and I can't wait to begin.
Here's an excellent review I read yesterday which will give you more insight into some of the themes covered in the book.
When we got together in July Brené asked if I'd be interested in doing some handwriting for a parenting manifesto that's part of Daring Greatly.
YEP.
You can download this 8x10 manifesto (and others on leadership and engaged feedback) by clicking here.
I also wanted to mention that there are Daring Greatly t-shirts. $10 from the purchase of each shirt goes to charity: water. The goal is for the Wholehearted community to raise $15,000 to fund a tap for 230 people in Rwanda. Click here to track the progress at charity: water.

Amazing Ali and Brene - love that manifesto - can't wait to start reading this book...too often vulnerability is seen as a weakness and as a negative instead of as an opportunity for learning and growth and change...

I was greatly inspired by Brene's "The Gifts of Imperfection" book, and I hope to keep making progress on my journey to become a wholehearted self with "Daring Greatly" (as soon as my student budget can afford it). As a graduate student, I'm surrounded by people that strive on shame and perfectionism, and Brene's work is greatly helping me learn to cope with and detach myself from all that madness.
