Let's Go To The Movies

You may or may not know that I really love going to the movies.

This is such an awesome time of the year for movies. On the first of December I'll be pulling out all of our holiday/Christmas movies we like to watch here at home. Today I wanted to share some of the movies I'm excited to see at the theater in the coming months.

In the last couple of weeks I've seen Flight, Argo, and just yesterday had my first experience ever attending an all-day movie marathon at the theater watching all the Twilight movies from beginning to end including the new one. Crazy and so fun.

Here's some of the other ones I'm planning to see when they hit the theaters - interestingly enough they are all based on famous books (some I have read and some I haven't). Click on any of the links to watch the trailer:

Les Mis | Love this extended trailer that talks about how they sang the songs live on camera as they were filming vs. recording the soundtrack first and then lip-syncing during filming. I've never read Les Mis so I just picked up the book and am hoping to get through it before the movie comes out.

The Hobbit | I'll be taking Simon to this one. Loved the Lord Of The Rings series and picked up the book for us to read together.

Life Of Pi | The preview for this one looks amazing. Another great book.

On The Road | Crazy iconic book. Probably crazy movie too (looks like it from the preview).

The Great Gatsby | My favorite book. I read this one junior year of high school with Mr. Ploof. He was an awesome english teacher - the best I had throughout high school and college.

Bring on the holiday movie season! Anything you are looking forward to seeing soon?

What a great line up! I SO look forward to getting out our Christmas movies every season as well - there's nothing better. Any suggestions of must haves for our collection? I have to see if there is anything NEW or NEW to us to add. I need to pick up Arthur's Christmas from last year (we never got around to seeing it) I would love more suggestions!

      Hi Audra,

I saw Arthur Christmas in the theater last year and I absolutely loved it! I plan on buying the dvd so we can watch it again. Last year we watched Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium on Christmas Day, and I would recommend this one too. It's not a Christmas themed movie, but the story really fits this time of year.

If you want a discount on ARTHUR CHRISTMAS, pick up a free coupon at your nearby UPS Store. I think it will save you $3 off the blu ray price.

If you do not have the original Bishop's Wife (black & white) I would suggest it as a must have and of course Scrooged with Bill Murray. Oh the list is long; The original black & white of Miracle on 34th Street; A Christmas Story (the story of the Red Rider BB gun - poor Ralphie); Holiday Inn; The Santa Claus; Bells of St Mary (oh Bing); National Lampoons Christmas Vacation; Its A Wonderful Life; the 1951 black & white A Christmas Carol; Black Adder's Christmas; The Polar Express ............ OK now I am in such excitement for December's movies to start.

Ali, The Guardians of Ga'Hoole book series might be a series that Simon would enjoy. My son and I enjoyed reading these back and forth when he was in 3rd grade. He's in 8th grade now and I sorely miss those "reading with each other" years.

You had a teacher called Mr Ploof? How fantastic! Just seen Skyfall this week and hoping to Argo next. Les Mis will be on my list ~ I've lost count how many times I've seen the West End show in London.

I'm a movie junkie too! ARGO was my fav so far this season. Loved the retro-ness. My list includes LINCOLN as well. Daniel Day Lewis is an amazing actor and I can't wait to see what he does with this epic role.

We have a family tradition every Christmas afternoon after our feast, we go see a movie. This year it is the Hobbit. Our family is crazy about the Lord of the Ring Trilogy, Harry Potter series, and the National Treasure Series_. so we are super stoked this year.

I always download the list of holiday movies/shows on the ABC Family channel so that the kids can see what is on. We don't watch every night, but we do make a point to make time for the really special ones. My kids love the Prep and Landing show and the shorts that have been relased. We bought the DVD last year and it has two additional shorts.

I can't wait for Les Mis and another I'm looking forward to is "This is Forty". Probably because I'm months away and need a good laugh!

Have a great holiday movie season Ali!

My older daughters had Mr. Ploof as well and they felt that he was their best teacher at BPS. He really prepared them well for college.
My youngest daughter is now a freshman and I sure hope she ends up in one of his classes.

Hi Ali! Love Les Mis- have seen it as a musical a few times and cannot wait for the movie. Another great old Christmas classic is "Christmas in Connecticut" - starring Barbara Stanwyck. Love it! I may pull it out today!
QUESTION: Maybe you are already planning to address this in a post - but am wondering - how do you decide what goes into your December Daily album vs. what goes into Project Life??? I do PL and am getting my DD organized - but that question has been going through my head as I prep my DD. Please help with some inspirations and ideas! THANK YOU!

Get prepared for unbelievable depth and richness of language in the book Les Miserables. It is my all time favorite. The quotes are so tremendous! The first time I saw a production of it, I literally came out speechless. I was so touched, I couldn't function!

I renamed the book "Grace, in the form of kindness, changes lives". Love, love, love, love this book. And I also LOVE the music (most of it).

We have recently seen Argo and Flight as well. That last scene in Argo - wow! I share the same list of "must see's" as you do, Ali, with these important additions: Lincoln, Anna Karenina and Hitchcock (not sure that's the name, but it's Hopkins starring as Hitchcock during the making of Psycho...not sure WHEN it's coming out, actually, but I'll be there!).

My kids & I love going to the movies! December here is the start of our long summer holidays and we go to the movies a lot - usually to escape the hot weather. I've been to one movie marathon, my mum took my siblings and me to a Star Wars marathon. i think it was when Return of the Jedi came out & they played all 3 originals back to back. I fell asleep sometime during Empire Strikes Back - my 9 yr old son was most disappointed in me when i told him - ha! My mum used to read lots of great books to us. The Hobbit is the most memorable one, so I can't wait to see the movie. I read The Great Gatsby in high school too - I've been looking forward to the new film version since I saw the trailer a few months ago.

My son ( now 20yrs. ) and I have favorite Christmas movies that we watch every year. For the past 7 years or so we have loved The Grinch with Jim Carrey and Love Actually. The latter is not appropriate for young kids.

    Ali,
Thanks for postings the video on Les Mis! It was really neat to see how they filmed the singing. Anne Hathaway and that song have been in my head since I saw the preview a couple of weeks ago. I can't wait to see the movie. And I wish I could sing that song like she does! It is packed with emotion that moves you.

Hubby & I used to see a movie each week, but he is so busy these days and I work nights most weekends, so it hasn't worked out lately, but we are a Movie family for sure!

Wow...If I wrote the same post we would have the exact same list. Except I haven't seen Flight yet and I'm also anxious to see Silver Linings Playbook. But it's Les Mis that I'm most obsessed about seeing. Also, although it's not new, my husband and I watch Love Actually on the last Saturday before Christmas every single year, and I really look forward to that.

With littles, we don't get out to the movies much, and with no cable TV (we mostly stream, if we watch at all) I usually don't even have a clue what is out. But we are going to see Argo tonight! I also want to see The Hobbit and Lincoln, and a girlfriend and I have plans to see Les Mis (hubby is not interested, which makes the babysitter issue much easier to cope with!) I'll have to check out the trailers for the others you mentioned.
