One Little Word 2013

One Little Word necklace from Lisa Leonard.

My word for 2013 is open.

Last year I had a great story about how my word came to me. This year it was more of a whisper and to be honest I'm not really sure what it means for me right now, or what it will end up meaning for me 12-months from now. And I'm okay with that.

Open is an attitude and an approach. It's a reminder to live wholeheartedly, to enter the ring, to live the length and the width. It's how I want to tackle this year.

I love that open is an action & a re-action. I can act with an open heart; I can re-act with an open heart.

I want to be open to it all - the amazing and the challenging. Wide open.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2013. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

ONE LITTLE WORD WORKSHOP

Registration is open for 2013 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we  can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the  course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2013.

My word is HEAL. I've had a rough year and had a relapse of my Depression that was severe enough for me to be off work for an extended period. With the depression came a number of old demons that I thought I had laid to rest. so 2013 is my year to heal - Emotionally, Spiritually, and Physically.

I wanted one word to fit my goal for 2013 and I chose MOVE. This word means so many things and fits what I want to do. I want to move more (get fit), I want to move past things and move on and I want to move people. I'm looking forward to keeping my word near and dear to me in 2013.

my word came to me in the summer of this year (not necessarily by choice :) ), and will extend throughout next year as well, i'm sure.

it is 'believe' because i was diagnosed with, had surgery for and underwent treatment for cancer. (we believe i am now cancer free, but will continue testing for several years)

the willametee valley cancer research institute where i was treated is also called the 'believe' institute and so it has become such a focus of my life these past 5 months. i can't go anywhere without seeing that word !

i believe in a cure - i believe in great doctors and care - i believe in hope and so much more.

as an extention of that, i will also be focusing on the word 'friend'. i have to make time to be a friend. send the cards i mean to send, make the phone call, etc. i get so busy that i forget and i need to do better with that.

so excited for what this year will bring !
thanks ali for continuing the tradition.

Blessings Jill for the coming year. I am sure your positive attitude will ensure you have a wonderful year. Thank you for the reminder that none of us knows what lies ahead and we should, as you said, make time to connect with others, send the card, make the phone call.

my word is TEND. I want to focus on the many areas of my life that I can tend to, nurture and make a difference. Tend to my marriage, tend my young children, tend our farm, tend the home improvement projects, tend to my own creativity and mindfulness.

    My 2013 word is W A I T.

I am not the best at patience and need to be, especially at work.

I am also patiently waiting for some sort of direction regarding how to decide if adoption is the best route for us and if so, how?

One of the sermons at church this month tied in Elizabeth and Zechariah waiting so long for a child and that story resonated with me of how waiting can truly be a blessing in disguise.

And so, I will practice waiting.

My word is simplify. I need to cut down on clutter - in my heart, in my home, in my way of thinking. I need to strip everything down to its barest form and focus on the things that matter most.

My word for 2013 is "powerful". True story, I'm new to all things Ali and PL etc. so I was browsing around and saw Ali's one word class, thought, that's cool. Sent link to fiance, he replys "cool, lets do it, whats your word, mines committed". I instantly thought "powerful" I want to be powerful this year. Powerful mind, Powerful body, Powerful with my time, Powerful in creation, just live powerful. Seems fitting as the word came to me so powerfully! I'm signed up for the class, we have gotten our journals ready and we are ready to be powerfully committed to 2013! Looking forward to the class and all the adventures it will bring! Cheers Lisa & Eddy ;)

    My word for 2013:

    Heal.

This will be the first new year of my life since I lost my mother in October this year. All I can hope for and strive for and remember to focus on for the year is grieve, mourne, and ultimately heal my heart within reasonability. In doing this I can work on healing physically to a state of good health. And practice healthy relationships with my family and friends.

My word for 2013 is RESPECT.

    RESPECT:
    -my husband
    -my kids
    -my talents
    -my wishes
    -my body
    -my home

I obviously respect my family overall but I think that I need to truly "listen to" or be "intuitive to" their needs on a deeper level and that requires Respect for who they are as individuals. Also, as a mother, I sometimes (ok, most of the time) put my needs last on the priorty list (if at all) so I need to start respecting myself by taking more care of myself too. To my body's needs with excercise and good nutrition, and regular doc visits and to my purpose and needs as an artist.

I've always liked to have some kind of word as a guiding light for the year, so thank you for sharing OLW with all of us. My word for 2013 is TOGETHER. It just sort of came to me one day and I decided to go with it. Meaning both together with others and together for myself in terms of self-confidence. I like that the word has multiple meanings.

I was so sure I knew what this year’s word would be: simplicity. I’ve been thinking and writing about it for weeks, was so certain. It seemed so right, so perfect, just what I needed for the coming year. But then something magic happened as I was working on a blog post announcing my word. I was making an image to capture my word, a picture I took from my front porch on Thanksgiving morning, where the crow flying across the sky was a happy accident. I added the word “simplicity” and it just didn’t look right. Font after font, different colors and sizes and weights and placement, and it still looked off, wrong somehow. I started considering the qualities of the word. Freedom and ease came immediately to mind. Freedom. Hmmm. There was something about that, so I tried it with the image: perfect. That’s my word. Freedom: simplicity, space, ease, surrender, clarity. “The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint; liberty, independence; the state of not being imprisoned or enslaved; being physically unrestricted and able to move easily; self-determination, open, opportunity, play, joy.” I like how that sounds. No, actually I love how that sounds. Here’s the image, if you were curious: http://thousandshadesofgray.wordpress.com/2012/12/02/reverb12-day-one/freedomthanksgivingcrow/

My word for 2013 is BOUNDARIES. I am enjoying more confidence in life and spinning lots of plates in the air but I need to have former boundaries to make space and time for the important things and people in my life. This is the third year I've joined in.... My previous words were complete and deliberate.
