Summer Voices | Amy Tan

We’re on summer holiday and we’ve invited some of our friends to share their voices and projects here over the next 2 weeks. Say hello to Amy Tan:

Hi everyone – What a pleasure to be guesting on Ali’s blog! As some of you already know, I love to travel. Documenting my adventures along the way in some form or fashion has always been a priority to me. I love looking through old journals – there’s one from a spring break cruise trip and I especially enjoy the art journal style one from my first trip to Australia right after graduating from college. There wasn’t a fuss over supplies, and I used what was available to me to just get it documented – mainly a pen, glue stick, photos and memorabilia.

I stuck with a similar simplistic approach while on my babymoon in Thailand (where I was 30 weeks pregnant). Though I brought my basic travel kit along, I had not intended on actual thorough documentation until I came across a couple amazing stationery stores – Isetan and Loft, both in Bangkok. I purchased some tapes and a journal that I decided would be perfect for all the bits I had been collecting.

My approach for trips is usually the same. Everything from ticket stubs to postcards to business cards and receipts get collected and put into an envelope (usually from the hotel). Sometimes these stay there, or get pasted into daybooks right away.

While in Phuket, on a rainy morning, I was inspired to get notes and bits into the book. I grabbed some postcards from the room and headed outside to create. Under the covered patio overlooking the Andaman Sea, I pasted in some papers and wrote brief journaling with an erasable pen called the Pilot Frixion.

I included plane tickets, receipts and a sweet card that greeted us on the bed with a teddy bear for the baby.

So as long as it’s not too hot or windy, I highly recommend you gather some supplies and get something creative done outdoors.

ABOUT AMY | It's hard for Amy Tan to imagine where her life would be had she not fallen in love with scrapbooking in 2007. This hobby has afforded her so many amazing opportunities - including a signature line with American Crafts, many of her projects published in a variety of magazines, and the chance to meet so many inspiring people - that she is endlessly grateful for. When she's not at home in Venice, California with boyfriend and two Jack Russell Terriers, she is traveling across the country, finding great places to eat, and doing her best to enjoy every moment. All while Instagramming everything along the way.

I have often said to myself how delightful life would be if I could do my scrapbooking outdoors!

Reason #893256902934756 to have a nice big (maybe even screened-in) porch one day. =)
