AE Project Life® | In-Progress Video And A Note About Video Equipment

AE_PLprogress

Happy Thursday!

I took some time on Tuesday to take a quick video of my 2013 and 2014 Project Life® progress.

Fun, fun, fun.

Here's a look at my 2013 and 2014 albums in progress:

A couple things in the video you might have questions about that are mentioned/seen in the video:

And just for fun:

AE_PL_Outtake

That would be me, not taking myself too seriously, as I set up the tripod.

AE_Tripod

For recording videos I use my Canon 5DMKII camera and this Promaster Carbon Fiber Tripod (C429W) with a Promaster Accessory Tilt Arm on the top to be able to shoot down on the table. All three legs are fully adjustable, allowing it to hold the heavy weight of this camera and lens combo. The microphone I use is a Sennheiser 400 (attached to the top of the camera).

You can read a post about some of my tips for photographing Project Life here.

Thanks for being "not serious". I need to remind myself to do that more often, too.

    Loved the video.

This is so helpful to see your 'progress' and also the 'empty spaces'. Makes me not feel quite so behind. Thank you for sharing even when it's not perfect yet.

Ali, love this video, thank you for sharing. My process is similar to yours in that I choose the pictures first. It flows much easier that way for me. I absolutely adore the 6x12 inserts you have included in your 2014 spreads, as well as the artistic pictures of you in the same size. I can't wait to try it in my own PL. Thanks again!

Thanks for sharing! So fun to get a peek at other people's work in progress. I have to wait for photos to be printed, so I'm journaling in a notebook where I can pull journaling for my cards from later. (I'm also collecting papers, tidbits, and specific cards I know I want to use in a file folder) Knowing I'm doing something fun like a PL album, for the *first time ever* I'm writing stuff down EVERY DAY! And bonus, I'm finding it very therapeutic at the end of the day to do that.

Thank you so much! I am collecting Project Life elements but haven't yet made a page. Your video really helped me understand how to get the proecss started.

Thanks for posting your work in progress. I use a very similar approach, although I usually do the journaling within a week of the days and then get my photos printed once a month at Costco. But I do use the Post-It notes to say what is going where so it makes it quick to put each photo in once I have them. TFS with a video.

    Hi Ali,
I have pretty much finished my 2013 project life album, I need a bit more journaling and then I am done...I realized that my album is so very overfilled...I pulled all my 12x12 layouts(not that many, but i am catching up) and want to put them in a separate album. How do you organize your 12x12 layouts? Or how do you keep your PL album from exploding? Lol.
    Thanks! ;)

I have finished my project life 2013 and my project life's are very simple as my children have all grown up but I have a question regarding Project Life core editions. Have you ever used them. I notice you use studio calico a lot instead of an actual core edition..

Yes I have used core kits in the past and continue to add them in. I started with Turquoise (2011), then Clementine (2012), then Seafoam for 2013. For 2014 I purchased Midnight.

Great post Ali. I was wondering if you have had your mic for a while or is it new? Are you happy with the sound quality? I am in the market for a mic so I would love some feedback. Thanks.

I've had it over a year. I think it's okay, not the most awesome, but it gets the job done.

    Hi Ali
I have a friend going through a very bad divorce and keeps ripping photos and journals apart that mention his name. There are two children involved. I feel that she is ruining memories for her children and was wondering what you did with all your old pages that feature you and Chris. And if there is any advice you can give me about the pages talking about they meet &what life was like work wise before the children came along.
Love the silly photo I am starting to try and remember to include me in the photo
    Thanks Emma

Hi Emma, I'm sorry your friend is going through that experience. All my old pages are exactly as they were before we were divorced in my albums and I continue to include Chris from time to time in the albums now. He was, and is, a part of my life story (and of Simon & Anna's stories obviously). People deal with the pain, loss and anger in all kinds of different ways and it's a very personal choice about what to do with those scrapbook pages. My best advice to someone would be to simply put them away for awhile - out of sight - to remove the temptation to do something you might regret in the future.

Hi Ali! I love the video.. thank you! Please forgive me if you've discussed this before but I was interested in how you document and keep track of stuff. Is this something you do daily on your phone, computer or paper?? As much as I try to document daily I fall behind in this and get frustrated since I told myself I would make documentation a PRIORITY this year!! Any tips on keeping notes and stuff? Thanks Ali, you are always so inspiring!!

Hey Cindy - most of the time I add post it notes to my album. When it's time to go back and work on my album I look through my photos and sometimes look to my calendar to see what was happening. I don't really track much other than that right now. Sometimes I will email things to myself if I don't think I will remember by the time I get home.

Loved the video and explanations along with your thoughts. The one thing that resonated the most is "I'm okay " with it! Seeing both 2013 & 2014 this way inspires me to complete 2013. I must go back and do it.

    Thank you.

    Hi Ali!
Thanks for the process video (I'm a huge how we do stuff geek!) It's very encouraging to see you still working on past weeks and resisting the urge to be always "caught up". I don't think I have ever been "caught up" but that is a-ok and everyone still loves looking through the albums. I have a similar approach, and I'm working on finding a space in my studio where I can leave the album out to make it easier to tuck things in and make more notes. I'm working on finishing up 2013 while I'm working on 2014 as well. I am finding that my stories are sometimes a better if they get to simmer a bit.
    Have a great day!

Hi Ali! Thanks so much for posting the video, I made some notes and am eager to get home and get back to work in finishing up my 2013 and continuing with my 2014 album. I've been really inspired by the "block" system that you and Katie have been using. I've been designating Wednesday nights as my "PL Night" and find I get excited to just get home and work on that! I love that you use little bits here at there (movie ticket stubs, bags, wrapping, etc) - I like using that as well, I feel it adds a certain personality. Thanks for giving us an insight into your album, I look forward to future postings!

[…] I started about 10:30am with the plan to deal with photos first. For me that’s a natural place to begin. Most of these spreads didn’t have stories written down so I was really hoping to fill more of the pockets with photos and then fill in with some words as the next step. You can see a video that shows what I had in place already (mainly sticky notes and a couple photos) here. […]
