December Daily 2010 | Day Six
Welcome to Day Six.
One of the things I worked on yesterday was making a set of Love, Santa tags for Two Peas 20 Days of Holiday Sharing. I'll post more details on that project in a new post later today. Rather than just throw away the paper I was working on - the one that has all the over-spray and paint on it - I decided to put that to good use in my album.
Day Six begins with an enlarged photo that I took of myself using the timer on my camera.
In Photoshop I added "celebrate the season," which comes in my Holiday Outline Word Art package from Designer Digitals. I printed here at home using a HP Photosmart B8550. (If you are ever looking for the equipment I use you can find that list in the FAQ. I also list general supplies I recommend here.)
One of the things I tried was embossing onto a photo. I don't think I've done that before.
For the Two Peas tags I'd already created this little set up with a punched heart (used a blue heart punch from Marvy). I laid that down onto my photo and applied Versamark clear embossing ink.
After applying the Versamark I poured some Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel onto the heart (the UTEE only sticks to the area where I applied the Versamark).
Using a heat gun I melted the embossing ink. It definitely did not go down as smooth as it does on other surfaces. I decided to just stop there and have a "marble-embossed" look this time rather than risk melting the photo.
I let that sit for a minute and then rubbed some Stickles in Christmas Red over the top.
After that was dry I stitched around the edge of the page with my sewing machine.
For page two I played with more leftovers on my table - beginning with this:
This is actually the inside of the Trader Joe's bag from yesterday. Seemed like a great surface for getting messy.
I cut it down to 5.5 x 6.25 to fit into the space on page two.
I wrote out some journaling (including using a white Sharpie Poster Paint Pen), drew a border with a black pen, stitched around the outline of the tag, and heat embossed a heart with UTEE.
I added another little bit along the bottom there and placed a white "play" tag along the bottom before stitching.
You could do this same sort of thing with kids artwork, something from a magazine, newspaper, wrapping paper, etc. Lots of possibilities.

SHARE A LINK TO YOUR DAY SIX
I’d love to have you include a link to your DAY SIX page here. Please link directly to your post or image on Flickr vs. your general blog link. Thank you! Also – don’t feel like you need to leave a comment!
I love how your page turned out. It's great to see you in a photo too. You are very good at "playing" with your supplies. One of my words that I may pick for 2011 is play, since reading your blog this year and all the inspiration you give me. Thanks for all you do Ali.
My page 6 is done too but will have to post it later.

You always have the coolest ideas. I love how you incorporated your "scraps" into something beautiful that tells the story about your day! I can't wait to see more as the month moves along!

oh, i'm the first to link :) {well, i've been eyeing your blog since the last post to see what you're up with next :) }.
love your 'messy' design ~ it still looks like you wanted it exactly the way it turned out...i have a big "problem" going messy...i'm more the controlled, everything straight type {but i'm working on that}.
have a wonderful thursday, julia
What's funny here is that the messy part was not really intentional - it was just the leftover from another project :). I LOVE straight lines - I think that's partly why I like this design too - I was able to add in a bit of funky/messy stuff but still keep it within the straight lines.

also i just wanted to ask, ive been wanting to purchase some of your word arts (like the one you have used today) but I don't have photoshop yet (just can't afford it right now) I use picasa for simple editing, am i able to used your 'products" on Picasa or soemhting similar, (like a photo editing programe i can download for free etc, budget a bit strict with xmas and b'days)? what can you recomend? Thanks x
You could try the GIMP. It's a free image editor with pretty advanced features. There are some GIMP tutorials at the bottom of this page http://thedailydigi.com/more-tutorials/
aww cool thanks for that Mellissa. I will be look at that now. I am finding over the last few years with my small camera, that im seeking better this and better that when it comes to how my photos turn out.I will one day get a much more 'proffession' camera sometime next year, but in the mean time, i really have to work with what i have and a good programe (till i get photoshop) would be aweseom!! Thanks
I do most of my layouts (except templates- them I do on Photoshop Elelments) on a Photo Editing Program that came free with Microsoft Word. You are able to drag and drop any JPG or PNG file (so eg. tags, word art, embellishments etc etc)onto a photo or cardstock that you opened in this program. Use the cutting and deleting and copy and pasting tools for most of what you need done, add text and whallah, a complete layout. You can have a look at my pages on Flickr, I'm "Childhood is Calling".
Beke, you could download the free 30 day trial of Photoshop Elements. A full copy is about $70 on Amazon so you could save up for it to purchase in 2011.

I was curious what kind of paper you use when you print your own pictures. I have the same printer and the most archival HP papers require you to let them sit for several days and the fast drying paper isn't as archival. Thank you for the link to the FAQ page. It will be a big help since I am going to try digital scrapbooking for the first time.
Thank you so much. I saw that it is only rated to last for 10 years, so I guess that we all have to figure out the balancing act between quick drying, a good looking print, and archival length. Appreciate the answer!
Hi Anne - I'm using Illford Gallerie Smooth: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006I5C3?ie=UTF8&tag=aliedwardsdes-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00006I5C3

Love these pages - you are so creative! Our yesterday turned out not to be anything christas related but instead became the story of tooth ache for my 5-yrd old son. Soon we are going back to the dentist (already been there once this morning, but he was sad and afraid so we'll get some medicine to calm him for the next try to fix his tooth). I wish so I could switch places with him...

I used my numbers on my day 6 too :) Yesterday we did nothing holiday related. I went back to work & the kids had school. Actually it was a tiring day. And that is what I scrapped about on day 6 - lol! I'm really loving the 6x8 pictures you are placing into your album!

Hi Ali, This is my 2nd year doing the DD and last years album was all positive things in my album but this year on the 8th is the 30th anniversary of John Lennon's death(I am a huge Beatles fan) and on the 15th will be the 10th anniversary of my beloved aunt Joy's death and I know both days will be spent thinking of them so do you think it would be okay to include this in my DD?
Rhonda, I say Absolutely. It wasn't planned that we would put our dear cat to sleep this month, but it happened. That was my December 4th. Life and memories are what they are, and holidays do trigger all emotions. Be real with yours. Just sayin'.
Absolutely include those stories if they are important to you Rhonda - that's what this is all about :)
Rhonda, I went to my Aunt's funeral today & I am going to include that, this is my first DD & I know that not everyday is Christmasy & not every day is a happy one, although I would like to celebrate my Aunt in my DD
Rhonda, that is such a great idea! I didn't take a lot of photos today, the 8th, and missed some I wanted to take, but one I DID take was of "Happy Christmas" spelled out on my frigde in magnetic letters. I think I'll write about the day and also about it being the anniversary of John Lennon's death! Thanks for the inspiration!

We read a new Christmas book last night that moms with boys or kids who love dinosaurs would like. My son loved it and wants to read it again tongiht.
It's called "THE DINOSAURS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS" by Anne Muecke.
We got it at the library this weekend along with some other new ones that I will post if they are good and worth finding.

Your album is going to be just beautiful, I love stopping by to have a peep each day! Mine looks nothing like yours, but I'm loving how it is all beginning to take shape. I read hints from people who have done this before and took them at their word to keep things simple (but even simple takes longer than I expect sometimes!) I also want to thank you for your encouragement and reminding me to not worry if one particular page disappoints when it is the project as a whole that matters.

I gotta ask a question. About how long did it take you to write and post this blog post? Honestly, my biggest time sucker was when I tried to keep up with a blog. And yours have so much detail and pictures. Wow.
Hi Gina - I actually timed myself the other night - I think it was for Day 5. It took me 2.5 hours starting at picking photos, journaling, printing, trimming, adhering, photographing, uploading, editing, and then writing the actual blog post. That's pretty fast for all that stuff. It definitely takes time - and some posts are longer than others - but I've got a system down that I follow and I'm quick to make decisions and call it good.
Hi Gina,
I had to comment on your question for Ali. It does take a lot of time but it's so much fun. I actually break it down into mini sessions thru the day and after kids are in bed. One day I did do all of it on one sitting but most days I can't. So maybe try to break it up into small sessions and don't feel you have to blog each day, maybe just your favorites or every other day or just the weekend ones. Hope this helps.
Ali - thank you for devoting so much of your holiday time to shepherding us through this project. I appreciate your commitment to making memories for your own family to enjoy and for additional time needed to share those memories and the process with us.

Great pic of you crafting Ali! This is such a great idea to include leftovers of your crafting too. You definitely got me into spraying/painting/crafting mode and I can't wait to get my fingers dirty!
