Time.

Poy2005d_1In Chris' stocking this year was the current issue of TIME magazine (photo from Time to the left) - the one with Bono and Bill & Melinda Gates on the cover. Last night I headed upstairs to bed, planning to get to sleep at a decent time, picked up the magazine and read for the next two hours.

A totally fascinating read, the main articles go into detail about the work that the Gates' and Bono have been up to lately: trying to save lives.

There are some hilarious quotes in there from Bono. I was particularly interested in the stories of him visiting capitol hill and figuring out (or attempting to play) the game of politics in America & worldwide. He seems to have a knack for bringing totally random people together, getting them to focus on what needs to be done.

After reading I had to get online (I waited until this morning) and revist the ONE Campaign. I rewatched the video a couple times. I also saw that they now have a blog. Cool.

In the article I also learned about the foundation that Bono started in 2002: DATA which stands for Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa. Lots to read about and learn on that site too.

Another part of the magazine I loved was seeing photos of Bill & George. Something about those two together makes me smile and giggle. I love the idea of putting aside the pettiness of politics. Something about those photos speaks to the human-ness of each one of us. Maybe I just like seeing life after being President. Who knows? I just liked it.

All this gets me pretty fired up inside.

As I was looking through TIME I was noticing lots of things that would be cool on scrapbook pages as a reflection of 2005. Statistics. Top stories. Words that became a part of our culture over the last year. Thinking I may have to use some of those on a layout. There was also an add in there (for I have no idea what) that had goldfish all over one page with a white background and the word LIFE in black. Ripped that one out as soon as I saw it and put it on my board this morning.

I am not sure you could read this issue and not wonder about your own role in the world. Back to that who are you and what are you doing with who you are question.

I love Bono, he is such an inspiration to so many people. I just love how he tries to make this world a better place and getting peoples attention. Funny that we can find inspiration in everything around us, even a TIME magazine. Good night, well at least for me , cause I am heading for my crib, talk to you soon!

I haven't yet read this issue but intend on it very soon - especially after reading what you have to say on it. The work they are doing is great, we just need more people/countries on board.
Thanks for getting more people to THINK.
    Cheers.

I am a lawyer...I'm starting to wonder why. I'm starting to wonder if there's more I can do with this training than file lawsuits...Thanks for being so thought-provoking.

We just went to the U2 concert here in St. Louis in mid December!! I left that concert with that exact feeling you described "...wondering about my own role in the world". He really makes you think. Alot of people have asked me if Bono "got political" at the concert because that's been the trend lately and roll their eyes when I say yes. But I tell them it's not an in your face, knock you over the head political. He doesn't ask for money just your voice.(as he likes to put it :)) So inspirational!!

i love bono...i'm usually annoyed with "famous" people who give their opinion & expect that is has more weight just because they are famous...but bono is actually doing something not just political but for PEOPLE.....changing people's lives & sharing with us so we can too...i loved the interview with he & the gates too...he keeps it real & cool...gotta love him:)

Ali -- I have been following your blog for several weeks now (I think I saw it linked through 2 Peas). Your post is so true. Life is much bigger than the daily grind...yet we forget that helping others is quite simple. I lead a grief recovery group at my church and the past few months has been eye opening, on many levels. The smallest things mean the world to them - a hug, a smile, a card in the mail. It seems we, as humans, try to make things so much more complicated than they need to be. Your approach to simplicity has really got me energized about the new year...THANK YOU :-) Keep up the wonderful postings (I especially love reading about Simon) and sharing your creative work!

    Hi Ali~
Don't know if you read other blogs, but my post yesterday kind of speaks to what you sometimes write about. The way our lives connect...the fact that we need to live in the moment. I invite you to drop by and read if you get the chance. Thanks for always making us "think" over here!

I read the same article in Time, as well as a really great issue a few months ago about "normal" people making a difference in world health & hunger--if you haven't read the latter, I'd definitely reccomend getting a copy from the library. I think that you would really enjoy it (& from what I gather, probably your husband as well). So inspiring!!!

The article was fascinating. I love Bono and went to the U2 concert in the fall. He puts as much energy into debt relief as he does in his concerts. I was born in a third world country so I appreciate what this means. Thanks for all the info.
