Possibilities.
Once again I am enchanted by the possibilities of stories to be told.
I got a bunch of photos in the mail yesterday that I had uploaded for printing including a great group from our spring break vacation. I often print from home using my HP Photosmart D7360 and am completely happy with the results, but I find that nothing beats opening up that package from the printer.
I went with white borders for our spring break pictures - something different (and definitely inspired by Karen). Getting excited about putting that album together.

And I have to tell you about Simon - he has become a fish. After really getting the hang of the whole swimming thing while on vacation (and basically spending all his time there in the pool) he is pretty amazing in the water now. We went to family swim at a local pool last night and he is just all over the place: under the water, laying on his back, floating on his front, jumping in and getting himself back to the wall even in deeper water, etc. The key for him was giving him a mask. He is definitely building strength and confidence in the water. I am a very happy mama (and Chris is a very happy papa) to be witnessing and encouraging all this (the coaxing out of the water...or pulling out of the water without meltdowns is a whole other story).
so glad to hear about Simons enjoyment for the water...
Every Thursday I volunteer up at the Y with the special ed kids... Its amazing how because I"m a mom of one how they respond to me... most of them are making friends now and putting heads in water,etc...
Now if only I could get Ryan! lol He still clings onto me like a barnacle! lol
He is big too, 80 olds at 8 years old! Yikes... so this summer, that is my goal is to teach him to swim or at least get him in the water !

I also print a lot of picures at home but recently we were bone dry on the ink front and I ordered pictures from online and picked them up from the local drugstore and it was so excited to pick up 300 pictures from the printer and now I'm working through telling all of these incredible stories. I have been on a roll creating lately and I'm finally working on my travel journal I ordered back when it was the KOTM!

Love getting photos back...I tend to print about 300 when I do...crazy!
My son was the same way with water...as soon as we gave him a mask (with a snorkel) he took off! Being Autistic he's always LOVED the water (hose, bathtub, kitchen sink, etc.) but the pool was slow-going. I remember when he could jump in and still keep his head above water. To this day I still have no idea how he did/does it!

A close friend of mine has a son with autism. He began swimming on our neighborhood swim team at age 6. He is now a junior in high school and swims (fantastically, I might add) on our high school team. It has been such a great activity for him.
I take my autistic niece (age 17) to our pool about 3 times/week in the summer. She also loves it.
How fun for your family!!!

the magical mask!!
the same for david!
he saw it in the store and said he needed it.
we tried to talk him out of it.
he was set on it...and it revolutionized the pool for him!
i think he is going to get baptised in it.

I love white boardered photos. There's a modern-vintage feel to them that is so clean and nice!

Ali,
It was the same for our oldest son, who is now ten. He was always cautious around the pool, not wanting to go in and especially not wanting to get his head wet/go under water. He was taking lessons at our local YMCA and another little boy had a pair of goggles. He let my son try them on and that was it! All the way home he wanted a pair of his own, so my husband took him out the next day and bought him a pair. He hasn't wanted to get out of a pool since! Who knew that it was that simple (for our son, anyway)? lol
Enjoy,
PAM

I work with many kids with autism, and several of them LOVE the water. Whenever I'm challenging one of them too much, he says "Wanna go to the pool?"
Good for Simon!

So glad that Simon has achieved that goal. Brody is so close and loves the pool also. I think we will have to try the googles. He is starting swimming lessons at the beginning of May and we have an aid that will be going in with him and I think the goggles would be a great help. Hopefully that will help - and the how great that the transition is improving. Wow - we all love that part!!!

Ahhhhh... following in mama's footsteps, being the little fish!! You must be so incredibly proud. Isn't parenthood THE BEST?!?! :-D
Blessings to your little family, Ali.

Love to hear about your little fish!
I am hoping and dreaming of a good summer of swimming from my two boys (ages 6 and 4). My oldest is very, very careful and tends to take a long time to warm up to new things...so being out of the water since last summer makes the "newness" of it all a hurdle. My youngest can't wait to go jumping in.
Cool pictures...love the white borders.

Way to go Simon :)
One way of letting students with autism know about upcoming transitions is to use a visual timer. We use these in the school I teach in.
Maybe you've seen these? Here's what they look like -

They show how much time is left by the red part.

that is such good news about the pool and swimming, hard dealing with the melt downs though, Alec has come a little further into the water this year, we are hoping next year goggles and flippers will make the difference too, our only problem is the melt downs now that he wants to go to the beach but it is too cold to go
