Sunday Happiness: Eric Carle on The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Around here we are big fans of Eric Carle's books - especially his classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Loved finding this little video gem online today where he talks a bit about the book and his creative process as he celebrates the release of The Very Hungry Caterpillar 40th Anniversary Pop-Up Book.

Someday I would love to visit his museum in Amherst. He even has a blog :).

I love Sundays.

Ali..we live about a half hour from the museum, in Western Mass. It is by far the most amazing place...his artwork for books and on it's own is incredible. Hope you get to visit some day!

That book holds special memories as it was the first book my son ever read aloud to me. The museum sounds intriguing.
Happy Sunday (what is left of it!)

His use of color fascinates me. My 87 year old Grandmother just scored some Eric Carle hardbacks at a garage sale. He is one of my fave kid authors! Nice post

Had the opportunity to meet him and have that book signed by him when my daughter was young. She is now 17 and I treasure that book and will give it to my grandkids someday as well as his other books that are all my favorites!!

The video's saying "no longer available" when I try to click on it. I'm wondering if it's the video clip that Scholastic's been using to promote their bookfairs this spring. . . where he actually recreates the caterpillar and talks about how it was originally a story about a worm. I volunteer in our school library, and saw it at least 7-8 times . .. and loved it each time. I'm sad that none of my kids are Eric Carle crazy anymore.

    Hey Ali,
We are huge fans of Eric Carle in this house as well. In fact, keep an eye on the museum events because we have ordered his books and gotten them signed - I believe he does a special event - possibly yearly :)

We love Eric Carle books. The librarian just read this book yesterday during storytime. We have The Very Hungry Caterpillar in Spanish. My son was frustrated because he couldn't find it last night. We read The Tiny Seed instead. Thanks for sharing the video.

    Hi Ali,
I live about 20 minutes from the museum and I have heard great things about it. In fact, in celebration of the 40th anniversay of his book and his 80th birthday, you can meet him on August 23rd here at the museum. Sounds like you all need to visit Western Massachusetts!

I went to the museum last fall with my niece and it was cool to see his original work up close. He also has 4 giant paintings outside of the museum that are very colorful and you were able to take pictures of those.

We have read "Brown Bear Brown Bear, what do you see?" and "Polar Bear Polar Bear, what do you hear?". Now my wife is making 2 quilts based on Brown Bear for a lady at church who is expecting twins. She has modified the pattern (http://www.andoverfabrics.com/QuiltDesigns/BrownBear.pdf) to be a baby quilt size. It is coming out too cute. Granted her new Brother Quattro 6000D is making this easy to piece.

I just saw that book for the very first time last September when the teacher read it in the kindergarten class I work in. I bought it at a book fair a couple weeks ago.
