Memory Keeping In The Modern World

And a little later by email...

Simon: "When I grow up tall like mom....When I grow up tall like Ali...I won't need the booster seat!"

Chris: "Are you thinking a lot about growing up this morning?"

Simon: "Yes, I am."

Oh sweet...I love those types of conversations! I wish I had documented them when my boys were younger.

I recall when my 2nd son said he was going to call me Maureen. Why no more Mama/Mom? Because Maureen is your name and you call me my name. If you want to call me Son, I'll call you Mom.
    Makes sense, doesn't it.

Wille started calling us by our first names when he was about four, I guess because he noticed we didn't call each other mom and dad so why should he? I loved it and still do (he's fifteen), I think it's cool!

So cute! My youngest (3) has just started calling me "Olivia," even though my name is "Marlee" -- no idea why!

My daughter calls her father by his nickname (everyone does) and he's happy with it, but she refers to him as 'my dad'. In fact, I call my parents by their affectionate nicknames too, so I guess it's not a remarkable thing at all. Kids will after all, follow strong role models!

Aren't these moments great! I love it when my kids tell me what they will be like when they grow up - you get a small glimpse into their thought process! Some of it surprises the heck out of you also - my ultra-tomboy girl wants all of my glitzy jewelry when she grows up (or she thinks she does now!)

The other night I had to twitter/facebook a conversation with my 10 year-old.
Last night - Jackson: What'ya doin'? Me: Looking at a camera and lens. J: How much it it? Me: $xxxxx J: Will that hurt my college fund?
    Can kids be any funnier?

God, isn't that sweet -- the things they say and think about? I love that ending. "Are you thinking a lot about growing up today?" "Yes, I am." So sweet!

That is the EXACT reason I've NEVER in my year of owning my iPhone deleted any of my husband and I's texts to one another. I had to be away for a training in the evenings last year, and some of the funniest moments during our initial potty training efforts (that I missed!) are now forever saved in my text message log.

Very sweet! And much better than my 7 year old. He told me "when I grow up, you will be my grandma, because you will be old then". Oh, thanks so much, was my thinking. At least he did say I could live with him and he will take care of me!!

Hey Ali! My son says funny and cute things all the time. I recently started an album about it and posted it on my blog. Check it out if you get a chance. (http://rachelcbriggs.blogspot.com/2009/08/conversations-with-mason-album.html)
I love those things they say. Most recently a conversation we had was about high school.
Me: Yeah. You'll go to high school one day too buddy.
Mason: Yeah I go to high school. When I'm taller.
