Yesterday & Today : Online Class At Big Picture Scrapbooking

YT_weekonelayoutimage

Information is now available for Yesterday & Today, my new online class at Big Picture Scrapbooking.

The
first six weeks of Yesterday & Today will address
topics related to yesterday: dealing with old photos,
identifying which stories mean the most, gaining perspective.
We'll then transition for a couple of weeks and shift
our focus to cover stories that include content from both
the past and the present. As we wind down, we'll devote
our energies to exploring techniques that help us tell
the stories of everyday life right now.

All the details, a full description, and an audio message can be found here.

Registration opens on Saturday, August 8th at 10am Pacific. Cost for the 13 week class, which runs from October 1 through December 31, is $99. This class is not limited to a specific number of students.

The first 50 people to register will receive a package of Happy Mail from Big Picture.

Here's a few questions I received yesterday (feel free to leave additional questions in the comments section and I will compile and answer them in another post):

From Deb : I'd really like to take your Yesterday & Today class at Big Picture Scrapbooking. I know it says it's designed for both paper and digi scrappers, but then I noticed that Photoshop Elements or some sort of photo-editing software is at the top of the supply list. I am strictly a paper scrapper and don't have photo-editing software. Will that be a deterrent?

Hi Deb - Each week students will be receiving word art/printable elements that can be used on the layouts or added to/printed on your photos. You do not need to have a photo-editing program for the word art (can be printed on to cardstock in Word or printed as a pdf), but if you choose to add elements to your photos you will need a program capable of doing that.

I will also be walking you though my process of working with old photos: scanning/enlarging, etc. I will be using Photoshop for those tutorials. If you plan to scan/work with any older photos at home you will want to have a photo-editing program.

From Carole: Quick Question about your new class at BPS. As you mentioned in your brief audio message, it is a busy time for everyone. My question is... can i sign up enroll and do nothing nor participate online in forums etc until January? We will miss out on anything....is there a time limit on download availabilities, gallery viewing etc...?

Hi Carole - The only thing you will miss out on during the actual class time is the live interaction with me on the message board. The class materials will be available for at least 30 days after the class ends and you can always request an access pass after the class closes. The class gallery and message board will remain open indefinitely.

Hi Ali - I'll be signing up for this.
I've had these old photos forever, scanned and printed just sitting and waiting for me to use them.
I've been floundering not knowing where to start, so I'm grateful to have this online class as a starting point.
    Can't wait.
    Thanks Ali,
    Francesca

I took your Evolution class at CKU. Are there any similarities between that class and Yesterday & Today?

Hey Ali. Really looking forward to this class. I borrowed my sisters' scanner recently + dug out the old negatives. Great memories + photos.
My question is about the supply list - I know you recommend using our own stash, but I'm just wondering about cardstock. Any number of sheets, any colours? Or just whatever we have/favourites/basics? Thanks, Ali. Can't wait.

I just wanted to tell you how much fun it was to hear your voice. It's funny when you "talk" to someone online and never actually hear them verbally. You get ideas in your head of how someone sounds. Oh yes, :-) your voice is lovely.
I did a book about myself, some heritage, several years ago, but stayed completely in the past....didn't tie it to the present. Didn't have any knowledge of how to do that, nor did it even occur to me.
That will be a great part of your class I think for younger women. My book covered pre-birth to marriage, lot of good information for my children and grandchildren on the history of the family, but not tied to today's life.
    Good luck with your project!

Ali, I'm really looking forward to taking this class. I know I'm going to learn so much from you and this will help with getting those older photos documented. I have a huge box of those in my closet.

Good question Korinne - this will be more in depth and more geared toward specific stories you want to tell (vs. the three general areas in the minibook). My goal is to make this an album for longer stories -

HI Victoria - I will be using white & cream for my background pages. You will need enough for 1 double-page spread each week (24 sheets - that will be more than you need because some weeks will be single pages). You will also need some of the same colors for printing out the digital elements to add to your pages - 8.5x11.

What cardstock do you use for cream?
    Thanks :)

I am still thinking if I should sign up for this class. Recently I had many slides digitalized, all from our family summer holidays in the seventies. I would love to make a book out of it, not necessarily linking it to the present.
If I decide not to link it to the present, do you think I would get enough out of this class? I would be interested in the scanning bit, and the story telling to go with those old pictures but that would be it... What do you recommend? Thanks!

I have been looking forward to taking your class all year!!! But we just found out we will be going on an amazing 8 week holiday to Australia to visit my family and go on a little road trip as well. So i would only be around for the first 6 weeks of the class. But i think I am still going to sign up! Will just have to catch up when I am back home!

I think you would still get enough out of the class. This class is really about storytelling - both in the past + the present. The album and pages we are creating are really flexible based on the stories that matter most to you.
Some of the layouts I will be doing are strictly about the past, some combine the two times (comparing + contrasting), and others are about today. Again, flexibility is key.
If you have the expectation/are looking for a project where you will be making a minibook exclusively using those old photos you will likely be disappointed. This class is more general in terms of covering different ideas and techniques related to storytelling at the different times in your life.

Ali, Your blog & column in CK are musts for me. I would LOVE to take your class, but right now it doesn't seem possible. Any chance you will offer this again? How much would I miss if, as you told Carole above, I do everything later but miss out on the interactive stuff with you?

Looking forward to the class and learning much more. Just started taking some Jessica Sprague and Renee Pearson digital classes with my new PSE 7.0 program. It's quite fun to learn this digital stuff. And combining it with my traditional paper techniques. I have a list of stories I want to tell and they include my history and what I am finding out about my grand parents and great grandparents and how I am like them and different. Thank you for this great opportunity to learn from you.

    Hi Ali,
I need to upgrade my printer and get a scanner. Are there any you recommend or have heard good things about? I like the combo print/scan/copy & photo developers but I'm wondering if I should go with a separate scanner....thoughts? Thanks so much!

I was curious how "heritage" the past is. I took your evolution class in Chicago...rocked!!!! and I used all the old photos I had of me up through college...I only own 15...would this class be ok to maybe only go back 5-10 years?

I don't know if this has been addresses or not but for people who don't have photo editing software you can download a free trial of photoshop elements. I'm pretty sure the trial will last the duration of the class, but don't quote me on that.

Hi Ali. Maybe this has been asked before but I didn't see it in comments. Do you know if there will be a payment schedule for the class? I know $100 bucks might not be a lot to some people but since my hubby has been laid off since February and it IS before the holidays do you know if we can pay in scheduled payments? I absolutely LOVE everything you do and am hoping this will be an option. Thank you Ali!!
ps. I am strictly a paper scrapper and do NOTHING digital. It's not a class that is more directed at the digi scrapper is it?? Thank you!!
