One More Seasonal Tradition: Scrapbooking Holiday Cards

2009HolidayCardsPhoto

One of my last holiday traditions each year as I am cleaning up & putting away is to get out my square punch and attack our holiday cards.

My goal is simple: create a collage of faces and designs from the various cards we receive throughout December. I grab my punch and go for it. Over the years I have used different sized square punches depending on the number of cards. This year I used the Extra Giga from Marvy Uchida.

I did a little searching in my archives and found this post talking about the process back in 2005. Here's an excerpt:

Since I am all about simplifying I came to the conclusion that I do not need to keep all the Christmas cards I received this year. I loved getting them. I celebrated each one that came through the mailbox. And now that Christmas is over I would still like to have a bit of a record of the cards from this Christmas, but I certainly don't need to hang on to them all.

It is ok.

How do I decide which part of the card to punch? I think what I have always loved about punching is that I am taking a bit of something and bringing it together with other somethings to create an entirely new something. When I was punching I tried not to think too hard. I laid my punch with the metal side up, slid the card in, and moved the card around using the window as a guide. When I saw something that looked just fine and I punched. Some of the photos were too large to get everyone in the square and that was totally OK. My vision was to bring together a bunch of bits of this year's cards - not preserve each one in its orginal state.

One thing I noticed this year is that people had their photos on all different kinds of papers: metallic, shiny, canvas, etc. This was definitely more of a trend than in years past.

And as much as I love doing each layout individually it is almost more fun to see all these layouts here together. Here's a look at the past card layouts from when I first started this process:

2008:

I found 2008's layout in need of a little assistance. When I found it in the 2008 album last night it was two pages with only the top two rows of photos on the second page. I decided to trim that off and attach it to the top of the full page (and use the Fiskars Apron Lace punch along the bottom).

What do you do with your holiday cards? Keep them? Toss them? Make something with them? Donate them? If you do donate them I would love to hear more about it.

Honestly. You're killing me with all this holiday goodness! I forgot about this, and almost threw my cards away. HEY! I found last year's cards in my holiday bin... wonder if I kept them thinking I'd do this last year???

What a great idea. I have just been keeping them in an envelope for each year. Square punches are out and I am punching. Happy New Year.

I love your idea and I think I'll start doing that too.
I always keep photos that people send me and scrapbook them. It's nothing fancy and I use holiday stickers around them. It's very basic, but I just don't have the heart to throw pictures away!

I use my Christmas cards in my People We Love album in my Library of Memories. So many people we love live so far away from us that we don't have photos or regular get-togethers to scrapbook. For the photo cards, I add a card each year to the page. So for my cousin, I have a 1 page layout that has 3 years of cards on it. If the person sends a card with a note, I cut out the notes, and date them, and maybe square punch part of the front of the card, especially if it shows something about the sender's personality (for example, we have some friends who always send Pooh cards). It doesn't take up much space for me, and it helps us remember those far flung friends!

I have a wreath in the shape of a snowflake that I got from Target a few years ago, that has the swirls on it to hold photos/cards. I put all of this years photo cards on that wreath and keep it up year round, remember our loved ones and praying for them when I see them on the wreath. Then the regular cards are made into tags and ornaments - on my blog there is an idea from Jennifer at Hope Studios to turn your cards into little notepads! I love that idea and will do that this year! www.lisarusselldesigns.blogspot.com

Loved seeing the compilation of your card layouts from years past. Thanks for sharing! Speaking of past layouts, I was wondering if you still had a link to your Lisa's (Bearnson) Favorite Album series 'All About Me' album that you made a couple of years ago. I'd love to see it again; I found it very inspirational.

Last year I included my holiday cards in the back of my December Daily. Of course I didn't keep them all, just the ones most important (and cutest too). Here is an example:

I am planning to continue this year as well, so they can all be together in one place. Loved seeing your pages throughout the years.

I have a metal wreath in the shape of a snowflake that has little swirls on it to hold photos and cards. I take this years photo cards and put them in the wreath and leave it up all year to look at. That way we remember and pray for our friends and family on a daily basis. The other cards I make into to/from tags for gifts with a tag punch, make ornaments out of them, or on my blog I posted an idea that Jennifer from Hope Studios had, making your Christmas Cards into little Notepads! I love that idea and will do that with my cards this year. It is a few posts down here: www.lisarusselldesigns.blogspot.com

my boss hole punches all the photo cards she receives and places them on a jump ring. each day she prays for the one on top and flips the card to the back. then, she hangs the jump ring on a cute peg in her office so she gets to enjoy the picture throughout her day.

This is very similar to what I do with my cards every year. Mine has been a bit more of a collage format in that I used varying sizes; but the same concept. It's nice to be able to still look back and see the faces every year ... without keeping all the actual cards!

What I great idea! I'm curious how you are liking your new HP Photosmart printer. I'm in the process of purchasing a photo printer, as our currect HP Officejet does not print out quality photos. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I started binding the whole lot of cards with the Bind-it-all, starting with our card on top. I do love the layout idea but I don't think I will be able to cut them. Especially since several of them are collages themselves.

This year I took the fronts of some cards and shredded them. Then I took the tiny strips and laid them on doublestick tape and made a border for my art journal page. I also stuck them individually in rows, but that took a lot of time! I took some circle punches and cut out the handwritten part of the cards because I love other people's writing! Take a look at them in the Art Journal 2010 album on my picturetrail site.

I do the exact same thing!!! But I try to use the whole picture which takes a lot of finesse to get it all to fit on an 8.5x11 two page layout. I love your idea of square punching them. I think I am going to try it this year. Thanks again for another great idea!
P.S. I see Margie in the lower corner... excited to see her new line!!! kiss kiss

I really don't get too many cards.
Two years ago, I punched the onees I had for my first Xmas album (for Shimelle's class). Last year and this one I've added them to the album since I only got 3-4 last year and 2 this year.
It's been a long time since I haven't sent cards out myself...

I use a tag punch and they become gift tags for next Christmas. Just write the To and From on the back side and add a string or ribbon.

What a great idea! I have cards saved for at least the last 5 years since I moved here. I can't bear to part with them...especially the custom made ones with pictures.
Thanks for all the good ideas! I read your blog daily and I'm hoping someday your creativity will rub off on me.

Photo cards will go into my P365 book. All others will be saved for next year's December Daily album! :)

i do this same thing, too! at some point i'd like to take the time to scan all the old ones, front and back (or inside) if there's writing, and put them into a snapfish or blurb book containing all our cards we've received throughout the years. but not this year!

I actually used bits of the cards that came in my December Daily for extra embellishment as needed (or just because I loved something on them). Or wanted to save the photo, but they are all bound into my DD album. I quite liked it too!

Hi Ali. So this isn't related to your post, but wanted to ask you if you've considered making a Google theme? There are so many artist themes out there, but nothing good related to scrapbooking/papercrafting. I think a theme from you would be so great and I'm sure many others agree.

I also attack mine with a square punch... I got the idea from you! I only have 4 years worth, but I really like them. If there's a special card that I really like, in tact, I make a pocket on the backside of the page (or the next page) and slip those special cards in there. I find there is only one or two cards that I keep whole from each year.

Loving it. This is my second HP Photosmart (loved the first one too - it was not oversized but was a total workhorse). They have worked great for me.
