The Span Of Time Via Photobooth

One of the simple ways I document life is via Photobooth on my computer.

It's a random, irregular tradition. There's some people out there that are much more disciplined with daily shots - check out DailyBooth or Daily Mugshot.

The kids love it. I get myself in the story.

Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands (or click a button on your computer) to make sure you're visually included in the stories you're telling.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a set of shots like this of your Mom or Dad or Grandparent or other loved one from a certain point or over a span of time?

We have photo booth too, and it's great. Our daughter, who is now 3, made her first photo booth appearance around her first birthday and it's great to flip back and see how her hair and cheeks have changed. We often play with the different perspectives too and have lots of great pictures of the whole family morphing their heads into pinholes or pillows. I think it's one of the best apps on the Mac!

Do you have to have a Mac for this to work? I love this idea! I have a PC (I wish I had a Mac!) and I'm not sure how to do it.

Love the photos - great way to document changes over time. I noticed your wooden stamps in the printer's drawer, that's how I store mine also. I have two old printer's drawers which hold all my wooden stamps and I love having them out where I can see them and grab something easily.

Hi Ali, I love this, but my question is, how do I get this for PC? Is there a separate program? Or one that's similar? Thank in advance.

Kelly - I have an HP and downloaded a program tonight called "Cyberlink You Cam" from the HP website, it was free. Had a blast playing around with it!

Ali: we love photobooth too! Especially my son. He really gets into it. Making funny faces and all. I used it for my week in the life documentation. Though I need to get a better background then my kitchen. But I'm always on my computer at the Kitchen table, since this is where the kids play during the day. Haven't tried taking a photo while skypeing though. I think it's something I need to try. Think it would make a nice gift for Nana to have an album of various skype photos of her talking to her grandkids, over a period of time.

I've also used iMovie to take videos of me with the kids. The most notable is of me and my son on his 3rd birthday last year dancing to "I got a feeling" by The Black Eyed Peas.

Ali, I was perusing Molly Irwin's blog for inspiration from her 2008/2009 December Daily albums (gorgeous!! http://mollyirwin.typepad.com/mollyirwin/december-daily-2009/). In one of them she references a quote that you used and credited to Sister Joan Chittister, but I can't seem to find it in your archives. Can you please re-share if you're so inclined? Thanks so much! :)

Hi Ali, this is a great idea and one I should implement. On a completed unrelated point, I was watching Parenthood last night and here in Australia we are up to the episode where they run for Autism Speaks. Not sure if you watch or not anyway - long story short I dreamt about the show and you were in it - weird but not really given that I heard about Autism Speaks through you, I have a 12 year old son with Asperger's so I really related to the show. Anyway keep up the great blog posts! Cheers Jane

Interesting post. I'm just about to upgrade our computers from PC to Macs so will be interested to use this feature. I've recently just lost my Dad to cancer and then his sister died suddenly and we've been going through all the family photos etc.. as everything was left to my siblings and I when our aunt died. It made me realise that I need to get on the other side of the camera more. For the sake of my kids and grandchildren when I'm not around any more. A legacy of love and a documentary of life to leave.

Sometimes I forget that my Mac is actually more than a word processor. Thanks for reminding me about the cool tool that is Photo Booth.
