Book Giveaway | The Beauty of Different by Karen Walrond

Today one person is going to receive a copy of Karen Walrond's lovely new hardcover book: The Beauty of Different.

Constantly bombarded with messages on how to think, how to feel, how to look, it can be very easy to fall into the mindset that we somehow fail as individuals, that we are not enough. But the truth is, those aspects of ourselves that make us individuals are actually the source of our own beauty, our super power. The Beauty of Different explores beauty in eight fresh ways and challenges the reader to revel in her own uniqueness. Combining beautiful imagery, portraiture, insightful commentary, essays, and interviews, this multisensory exploration of what is really beautiful provokes deeper self-discovery. Designed to connect and inspire, The Beauty of Different encourages the reader to reframe her differences, not as shortcomings, but as characteristics of distinction--maybe even superpowers.

Very simply put, this book is a wonderful combination of photos + words. It's interviews and stories addressing subjects such as adventure, individuality, spirituality, and imperfection, woven together with Karen's breathtaking photographs. It's the kind of book you can pick up anytime, read a section or a couple pages, and get inspired to tell your own stories related to the theme.

And the whole concept of different being beautiful...I'm wholeheartedly on board with that. Thank you God for different.

You can check out Karen's Beauty of Different blog here.

In addition, Karen recently came to my house and interviewed me about creativity for BlogHer's Own Your Beauty series. You read her thoughts on creativity and watch the video she created from my interview here.

Also, check out her project "Photovent 2010" - a really cool take on a photo garland. She's got a free download and instructions too.

My eyes are prone to turn into half-moon slits, like you see on smiling anime girls - because I smile a LOT!

Something different about me: I'm blind in one eye. What's beautiful: I CAN see all the beautiful things in my life.

What makes me different is that I am not hesitant to do things solo; I follow what strikes my fancy. My grown sons tell me I'm not a "real girl" because I don't spend hours shopping as the females they know do . . . secret: online shopping! Life is good.

I tend to have an undying sense of hope--even when there's only .5 seconds on the clock and we're down by 10 :)

I always feel bad when people ask me how many ScrapBook albums I have and I have to tell them less than five and only I complete. Well, what I think is special about me is that I create and keep memories for others, not for myself. I guess I should start "keeping" a few things for my daughters.

Thanks for the give away and for pointing me to Karen's beautiful blog.

It's difficult sometimes to appreciate beauty especially (when we talk about people) when the media really only appreciates a particular type. So thankful that the definition is starting to include other ethnicities. I am beautiful because I am Okinawan.

To me, beauty is about gratitude. It is about being thankful for so many wonderful gifts we are given daily. As a result, in appreciating these moments, these faces, these little objects, we see BEAUTY. By being grateful, the world of beauty unfolds for us over and over again--Even by writing this, I am bathed in a loving moment! Have a beautiful (and grateful) day!

Let's see...what's unique! I'm a walking contradiction. I enjoy being alone but crave being around my friends. I'm a procrastinator, but I love deadlines.

I am growing, I am changing, I am accepting that I am not perfect. I am spending more time with my kids, playing with them. This is different of my life just few months ago and I believe it is a beautiful thing.

I am wracking my brains here to think of something different about me...I feel like I am very different from all the people I know. I'm dramatic and loud and tend to always be in the spotlight - without trying. I have some 'magic' with children - I am a teacher and I feel like I am a bit of a "Horse Whisperer" or should I say "Kid Whisperer?" I remember what it was like to be a kid and I can kinda guess what they are thinking. They really respond to me. It's a very good different too be.

The most important loved one in my life told me that one of the reasons he loves me is because the greatest gift I have is to feel compassion for people and understand what they are going through without knowing all the details. That really blessed me so much. I would love to read this book. Thanks, Ali!

I am a HUGE believer that people in general do not express their thanks to each other often enough. I make a conscious effort every day to thank people for things that they do for me. Expressions of appreciation have become my special "talent".
