One Little Word 2012

Poster print via Poster Inspired.

My word for 2012 is up.

It came to me one day last month while I was working in the kitchen and the kids were watching the movie Up. My initial connection to the word stems from the part towards the end where the old man is looking at the scrapbook his wife made and a note she wrote to him at the end which says something along the lines of "Thanks for the adventure. Now go have a new one." (Found the clip here.)

That's the attitude I'd like to be working towards and embracing in 2012 - giving thanks for the things that were great about my marriage and then moving forward and welcoming whatever is coming next.

Up | ready, eager, open, awake, into a happy mood

There were so many words I could have chosen for what I want for myself in 2012. This one simply feels like a good starting place. I will also be carrying three of my past words close to my heart again in 2012: light, story, and peace.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2012. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

In a couple of days I'll post a compilation of the words as an inspirational reminder to us all.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Above is an image of all my prompts from my album that I made for my One Little Word class at Big Picture in 2011.

Registration is open for 2012 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2012.

This is my first OLW, and it's JOY. 2011 was filled with an epic battle with depression and just a general feeling of misery. I want to learn to find joy in life - especially in the drudgery. This year I'm looking forward to focusing on joy and seeing where this journey will take me.

My word is harmony. "Agreement, accord, harmonious relations." Besides bringing more of this into relationships, I'd like to bring more music into my life in new and nurturing ways.

Ali, thank you for your "one little word" challenge/reminder. It's a great inspiration and so are you!
    Best wishes for 2012.

My word for 2012 is balance. Specifically, regaining mine!

From reading all the posts of people who have thought the same in years past, I am excited to get started.

my word for the year is perceive. I have realized very keenly over the past year that I need to see clearly without the imprisoning haze of self doubt and negativity. I need to know myself in order to be able to express and communicate through my art.
thank you for letting me share this. It was lovely to read other words as well. Very inspiring!

    Hi Ali,

I signed up for your online class last year and have to admit that I did a very poor job of following along! My word last year was move and we moved house twice so maybe I had a premonition or something last January!

Anyways, I am going to try again. This year I have chosen the word cultivate because I like how it involves action to create something. It is applicable to all areas of my life: my marriage, home, job, mothering etc. And I am going to do my damndest to actually make my book this year!!!!

    Olwyn

My word for 2012 is going to be "more." It means greater, further, farther, in addition, extra. I am going to combine my one little word "more" with so many things I want to do, with the goal of making this new year one of my best years yet. I also plan to make it not all about me but make it "more" about everything positive around me! I'm really excited about this adventure!

My OLW for 2012 is DISCOVER. I tried to find another but this word keeps coming to the fore. After a shocker 2011 I realise it is past the time to discover more about myself as a person, a mother, a leader, a woman. My whole life until now has been defined by people and things that are no longer there. I begin 2012 in a new house and a new job and essentially a new life so I look forward to all the little discoveries waiting in store for me. With a 7 week trip to France and England in Feb/Mar I plan to discover the beauty in the world around me. I want to sit in the warmth of coffee shops and watch the world walking by. I plan to discover the 'real' people in the places I will go and discover treasures away from the tourist sites. So I guess DISCOVER is a good word for me in what I know will be a great year.

Oh, Ali . . . I've joined in the whole "Word of the Year" movement for the past four years, I believe. Each year, it changes my life. Thank you for introducing me to the power of one little word.

This year, I've picked COURAGE. Or it has picked me, really. Last July of 2011, my job was eliminated. I found myself in a rare opportunity to follow my dreams and began my very own creative business. I have SO FAR to go (of course), so this year I sought a word that would help me forge ahead. COURAGE. It's perfect for me.

Wishing you a wonderful year, Ali. Thinking of you.

This is my favorite part of the year. My OLW for 2012 is HEALTH. I will continue to hold my words from prior years close to my heart...but this year's word is part of my ongoing journey. Health in every sense...physical, mental, spritual. Thank you for doing this every year!

my one little word for 2012 is hokey pokey.

why? I feel alive and free when I remember to put my WHOLE SELF IN.

and when I get wrapped up in the everyday, it will remind me to take the time to dance. to put my whole self in, shake it all about & turn my self around.

My OLW for 2012 is 'blessings'. I'll be counting my blessings as opposed to complaining and being negative. I'll be blessing my home by decluttering and organizing. I'll be blessing my body (and my family's) with healthier food and exercise. I'll be blessing my spirit by reading scripture and being sure to make time to do something enjoyable for me. My OLW from last year was 'quiet' and it will be piggybacking with my new word b/c I still need to work on that OLW too.
