One Little Word 2012

Poster print via Poster Inspired.

My word for 2012 is up.

It came to me one day last month while I was working in the kitchen and the kids were watching the movie Up. My initial connection to the word stems from the part towards the end where the old man is looking at the scrapbook his wife made and a note she wrote to him at the end which says something along the lines of "Thanks for the adventure. Now go have a new one." (Found the clip here.)

That's the attitude I'd like to be working towards and embracing in 2012 - giving thanks for the things that were great about my marriage and then moving forward and welcoming whatever is coming next.

Up | ready, eager, open, awake, into a happy mood

There were so many words I could have chosen for what I want for myself in 2012. This one simply feels like a good starting place. I will also be carrying three of my past words close to my heart again in 2012: light, story, and peace.

Are you considering selecting a word for yourself (or letting one find you)? There's no right or wrong. The main thing to remember is that this is your word. It's not for your child, parent, partner, spouse, sister, etc.

And what do you do with this one little word?

You live with it. You invite it into you life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.

I'd love to read what word you've chosen or are considering for 2012. In the comments feel free to simply leave your word as your comment or write a bit about why you are choosing this word. In a couple days I'll combine all the words into a single post - super inspiring to see all the words in one place.

In a couple of days I'll post a compilation of the words as an inspirational reminder to us all.

If you’re new to the concept of One Little Word, you can read some of my previous posts here: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Above is an image of all my prompts from my album that I made for my One Little Word class at Big Picture in 2011.

Registration is open for 2012 and you're invited to join the journey.

Each month you'll receive a prompt with a simple creative, writing, or photography project and a gentle reminder to check back in with your word. By the end of the year you'll have compiled the contents of an 8.5x11 album that documents, defines, celebrates and generally makes your word more visible. Workshop materials include printable elements, full-color PDF handouts, and video presentations.

People have been asking me if you have to be a scrapbooker for this class. My answer is no. Even though we are making an album it's really more of a journaling/record keeping/thinking/exploring project. I'm excited to see how people interpret the prompts and make them meaningful for their own lives.

This is not complicated and it's not time-consuming. It's simply a way we can come together to share our experience with our words throughout the course of the year.

The One Little Word classroom opens on January 1, 2012.

FINISH -- I saw this link on Pat Sloan's blog and thought it was a great idea.

I chose finish because I have such a habit of starting with good intentions but rarely following it through.

    Finish --- quilt projects
    Finish --- weight loss
    Finish --- C25K (Couch to 5 K running program)
Finish --- running my first 5K

Finding just one little word sounds so simple. Until you start thinking, then there are oh so many words that come flooding in.

Action - I need to take action in so many ways. To improve my health, to revamp my craft room, to add a jolt to my business and so much more.

I've mulled over other words...such as: move, change, and energize. The word that keeps popping into my head is action.

[...] There’s a movement happening on the web that gives a new perspective to goal-setting for the new year. Instead of focusing on bad habits to break, or setting unreasonably high resolutions, or creating a complex web of things to accomplish before the end of the year, these people are choosing one little word to frame the new year. Some are choosing words to encourage the accomplishment of goals, while others are looking for mindfulness, slowing down, or a reminder. You can read more about it here. [...]

I think my one little word for this year will be balance - not to see how high I can stack papers before they lose balance and crash to the floor, but to work on balancing all the little/not so little parts of my life. Today, I had two balancing challenges - the first was when taking a cake from the oven, I balanced it with burning fingers (ha). The second balance challenge for today was time spent with my overly energized sixth grade class - balancing time, patience, and activities for them is always a challenge. Great start!

My word is stand. I chose this word because I want to focus on standing up for what I believe in, standing firm in my values, and on being myself even if that means standing out in the crowd. This is my first time to participate and I'm excited to see how choosing this word will affect my life this year!

This is so timely! I've written over a hundred novels since first being published in 1983. Since it takes, on average, nine months for a publisher to put out a book, along with writing seven days a week, I'm always planning way into the future. At the moment I'm writing a book that'll be published in 2013.

In 2011, I wrote two novels, built one house while living 3,000 miles away (which involved a lot of frequent flier miles), sold another house, and moved our three rescued dogs in a motorhome bought for the trip across ten states in nine days to beat the moving van to our new home on Puget Sound. And immediately began my next contracted book.

Then, right after Thankgiving, my husband got diagnosed with Parkinsons. After the initial emotional hit, I went into my usual control-freak planning mode, researching, finding therapists,
Trainers and exercise classes to maintain his core stength and balance, etc. But the one thing my research has taught us is that everyone is different. I can't control EVERY aspect of this new journey we're setting out on.

So my word is "Now." Rather than waste time worrying about a future we can't see clearly(in reality, who can?, I'm going to spend more time in the now. Pausing to fully appreciate a good day or even a lovely moment, rather than always racing on to the next thing/goal.

And yes, I did nearly write a novel here! lol

My word for the year is UPCYCLE! In my home decor, in my crafting, in my clothing, and yes even me, myself! I want to take what is already wonderful and "there" and rethink it to reinvent it and make things even better and better. That is my goal. In the process it will be soul-friendly, budget friendly and earth friendly.

I have two words because I cant find one work that combines the two to make the meaning I want. It is Follow Through. I am a Pinterest girl...lots of ideas, and good intentions, but not following through on what I really want. So this year is the year of follow through and completing some things, and changing others.

my word this year is here as in 'here and now' instead of thinking about what i was doing or should be doing i need to enjoy the moment and live in the moment. planning ahead and organizing will help me enjoy the 'here' without worrying about what needs to be done. and when i'm in the 'here and now' i will hear and listen to what is going on...
