A Day In The Life | Documenting Today

Thursday With Anna
From February 2010.

Happy Wednesday!

Here's my goals for today as I document A Day In The Life:

1. Take a bunch of photos. I feel like I've slacked off a lately. Some of my favorite photos have come from the times when I've been consciously documenting our days (such as during Week In The Life). I'm thinking I'll probably do a combination of iPhone and DSLR with the intent to create a "picture story" (via Henri Cartier-Bresson) of my day. I'm hoping to get some good use out of the wireless remote I recently purchased for my bigger camera.

2. Really capture a written look at the basic everyday details (times, places, events) combined with observations, thoughts and gratitudes of life right now.

I'm planning to add my content to my Project Life album. I created an 8.5x11 layered template for photos that I'm going to pair that with the Daily Sheets (no need to re-write or type all that content over again).

No matter what time you come across this post today (or in the days to come), it's not to late to do this on your own. There's never a perfect day for this project. Maybe you do it for half the day or tomorrow or the next day or next week. You don't have to add it to Project Life. Maybe at the end of the day you look back and see five stories you want to tell. Maybe just one. Maybe you'll create a minibook of your day or a single layout. Or maybe you will post on your blog and capture the content with words and photos online.

Whatever you do, it counts.

I'm doing this today because I need to see, via words and photos, where we are (I am) right now. I need to be reminded of all that is good and loving even in the midst of a major life transition. I've learned over the years that these sorts of projects have a way of bringing that all to the surface and it helps me see the areas I may need/want to make adjustments in daily routines.

Click here to download the A Day In The Life freebie.

To help celebrate today, and encourage you along the way, I designed a digital freebie for you. It includes two PNG files (one 4x6 and one 3x4) and two Silhouette Studio files. For more information on working with digital files check out my links for Getting Started With Digital Scrapbooking.

Have fun today. No rules. No stress.

Hey Ali! Thanks for the freebie! Do you have a video tutorial on how to print PNG as PDF? I want to print this as a 3 X 4 journaling card for PL in PSE but can't figure it out. Can you help me? Thanks again!

Hi Ali, I'm in Singapore and have competed my day! Read your blog post two days ago and thought why not? I had much fun recording my very routine, typical day. And your suggestion today to include observations, gratitude, really inspired me. I'm thinking of journaling under two columns with header: Doing, and Feeling. What a great page to add to my PL! Thank you and have a blessed day too!

Ali, today was/is my daughters birthday and the first one of the year for our family. Thank you for the inspiration. I can't wait to see what I "captured" today. I would love to do this for each birthday we have this year (4 for the kids at least). I stopped a couple times and journaled in my phone, so I hope a great picture comes together. Can't wait to see your take!

I'm in! I've been writing all day, and taking pictures, all with my iPhone. What did I do before I had this? Thanks for the freebie also. I'm going to cut it with my Silhouette with your instructions...haven't had a chance to try that yet! Thanks for the encouragement. I have been doing Project Life too, and was feeling like I was already in a rut and a little bored with my process. I think this will energize me for both projects.

Thank you for the lovely gift! I love Project Life and it is something that I never thought I would do..ever. Only you, Ali, could make me see how important, fun, and endlessly creative this project is on so many levels. I never thought I could love any project as much as 25 Days of December but Project Life is a contender. :) I too am going through a major transition as my sweet mother's health is so fragile but these moments too are such an important part of our life stories that I don't want to miss the beauty in each moment. The camera, and the stories, reveal the deepest love we can ever feel for those we love and Project Life helps us to hold those moments forever. Big hugs, Bonnie

Ali--thanks so much --is this the first time you have included studio files in your products. I have most of them and never noticed it before. If you have included please let me know which ones and if not please definitely include them in your designer digital products---makes it even better!

Hi Candy - no, it's not something I normally do but might do some in the future. I do have a tutorial available for using my PNG files with the SIlhouette here: http://aliedwards.com/2011/12/december-daily-2011-day-three.html

Just wanted to say thank you! I'm on maternity leave right now, and before I know it I will be back to work full time. I completed the week in the life project last week to help document this special time. As I was going through my massive amounts of pictures I had to smile and give you a great big thanks! There were many times last week that I wanted to quit and give up, but I'm so glad I continued.
    THanks,
    Jess

Wow, love this, thank you and it could not have come at a better time. I was sorting through some old photos the other day and I found a packet of pics from a day in my sons life that I took when he was three, he is about to turn 13 next week. I had documented all the fun things we did together in a day just before he started kindergarten. Can't wait to use it on a page.
