Daring Greatly Giveaway

I'm super excited to support my friend Brené Brown today as she launches her new book Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead.

Just the title gets me excited.

GIVEAWAY | One person will receive the new book Daring Greatly by Brené Brown and a Daring Greatly T-shirt.

I met Brené five years ago at a gathering of women brought together by Kelly Rae Roberts and Jen Lemen. We became fast friends when we roomed together as we chatted about our families, our work, our childhood (we were both swimmers and life guards), and our type-A personalities.

Earlier this summer Brené and I held our breaths & practiced bravery together as we took off on an adventure in an 8-seater airplane for a vacation with our girlfriends.

Bottom line, she's one of my favorite people and I'm super thankful we were put in that room together five years ago.

Here's a bit about her professionally:

Brené Brown, Ph.D., LMSW is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past decade studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame.

Her 2010 TEDxHouston talk on the power of vulnerability is one of most watched talks on TED.com, with approximately 5 million views. She gave the closing talk, Listening to Shame, at the 2012 TED Conference in Long Beach.

Here's the description of her new book:

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable, or to dare greatly. Whether the arena is a new relationship, an important meeting, our creative process, or a difficult family conversation, we must find the courage to walk into vulnerability and engage with our whole hearts.

In Daring Greatly, Dr. Brown challenges everything we think we know about vulnerability. Based on twelve years of research, she argues that vulnerability is not weakness, but rather our clearest path to courage, engagement, and meaningful connection. The book that Dr. Brown’s many fans have been waiting for, Daring Greatly will spark a new spirit of truth—and trust—in our organizations, families, schools, and communities.

Check out the trailer for her new book:

It's on my nightstand and I can't wait to begin.

Here's an excellent review I read yesterday which will give you more insight into some of the themes covered in the book.

When we got together in July Brené asked if I'd be interested in doing some handwriting for a parenting manifesto that's part of Daring Greatly.

YEP.

You can download this 8x10 manifesto (and others on leadership and engaged feedback) by clicking here.

I also wanted to mention that there are Daring Greatly t-shirts. $10 from the purchase of each shirt goes to charity: water. The goal is for the Wholehearted community to raise $15,000 to fund a tap for 230 people in Rwanda. Click here to track the progress at charity: water.

Everything I am hearing about this book tells me that I will be reading it BEFORE any of the others on my list. Brene's other books have inspired me and helped so much in my healing & recovery process. Her work should be required reading for everyone. Can't wait - thanks so much Brene - you get a hug!

I've Loved Brene's work since I saw her Ted Talk over a year ago. She imparted some sage wisdom and I knew in that moment that I had been and would continue to be deeply impacted by her work.
Here is the piece that really stood out to me:

"To let ourselves be seen, deeply seen, vulnerably seen.
To love with whole hearts even though there is no guarantee.
Practice gratitude and lean into joy in those moments of terror.
    Believe that you are enough."

If you have 20 minutes, I encourage you to watch it. It might change the way you think about humanity. It did for me.

Ali - I love knowing that you and Brene are friends. I loved reading about it. Thanks for sharing her work and your story.

    with gratitude,

    Megan

Hello, Thanks for letting us know about her new book, currently I'm reading 'The Gift of Imperfection'....very slowly, trying to absorb all of the wisdom within (where was this book when I was younger?) I think she's going to be on 'Katie' this week, hope to be able to watch the program. Thanks, Ali
