How Do You Read Blogs?

Have you read the news that Google Reader is going away?

Which leads me to my next question...

How do you read blogs these days?

Via a reader? Via email? Via bookmarks?

I've been using Feedly for a bit now and love the clean streamlined design plus it looks great on my ipad which is where I tend to read blogs the most (thanks to Peppermint for the tip on that one a few months back). I also just have a set of bookmarks in Firefox toolbar that includes blogs I like to visit from time to time. I do have a couple blogs I subscribe to via email that I really don't want to miss.

Thoughts?

I subscribe via email so that I don't miss anything, but I love to read blogs on the actual website. I use my lunch break for this guilty pleasure full of inspiration! :)

I have been using google reader forever. I am just switching to feedly as well and do like the "look" so far. I admit thought that I often click over via twitter links too.

Thank you very much for posting this. Since I heard that Google Reader was going away, I have been avoiding searching for a new app. This has pushed me to research new options and figure out what I'm going to do. I love Byline but it depends on Google Reader. I'm going to try some of these suggestions and find my new solution. Thanks again!

What I love about Google Reader is the Next button. Anything like that out there?

I'm old school - i type in the name of the blogs that i read frequently and let internet explorer pull them up for me. From there, I usually find/visit blogs from links - like BH's Creative Team page. I subscribe to a few blogs too - stuff that I like, but doesn't publish everyday like you do. :)

    Hi Ali -

When I started reading blogs a few years ago, I just put the blogs I followed (now over 200) in Blogger. I'm not that "Blogging savy", so not sure if that will go away since it is supported by Google and when you enter a blog to follow in Blogger, it supposedly puts a subscription for it in Google Reader. What I like about Blogger is that it allows me to view my list of subscribed blogs on any PC, on my smart phone and my iPad. All without downloading software. So I'm kind of not sure if I have to worry since I use Blogger. I'm so confused - LOL!

For the past couple years I've been a Bloglovin' girl through and through. I love that it has the ability to "like" a post (for later reference) and the mobile app is easy to use and looks nice, too.

Since hearing about Google Reader, I switched to Feedly. Been using it for a month now. I do like the clean look but it requires more steps if I wanna read directly from the blog or leave a comment since it doesn't show the comments section. I definitely miss the 'Next' feature from Google Reader where it'll just bring me to the next subscribed blog with that click.

I tried organizing my subscribed blogs in Feedly and it only allows me to selectively organize from my imported list. Still figuring out Feedly on the whole. But I Will also check out other readers.

I'm using both Bloglovin' and Feedly, because they work with different web browsers I use. Both made it easy to transfer the blogs I follow from Google reader over to their sites --- took less than 5 minutes and they did all the work! I also love that both sites allow you to categorize by topic. I have all my scrapbooking blogs in one category, my food blogs in another, and so on. Makes browsing them even more fun!

I've used Google Reader for years! But I had just discovered Feedly a few weeks before the announcement and love it. I love the photographs and magazine style. I am very visual, so being able to see a photograph to go along with a Title really helps me make a decision about whether I want to read it or not. It really helps me pick and choose which ones I feel like reading that day.

I only read via bookmarks. I tried subscribing to a couple, but I found that if I got the email when it wasn't a convenient time for me to read it, I forgot aobut it.
This way, with bookmarks, when I have my "me" time, I simply sit at the computer and read all of them at once, at my schedule.

I've used iGoogle for awhile, which is also going away. More often these days, I find myself visiting posts from Twitter. I hate to complain, but I must say I find it quite frustrating when a tweet sends me to Facebook first, creating an extra step to get to the content. I don't understand why it would benefit anyone for me to see a second teaser on Facebook, then send me to the blog I wanted to see in the first place. I hope this seems constructive, as that's the spirit in which I write it! Thanks for all the inspiration!

I use FeeddlerRSS on my Ipad to catch up on my blog reading. I like it because not only does it list all the blog posts in the main view, but it also has a menu on the side that lists all the blogs I am subscribed to. If I want to read posts from a certain blog, I can click on it and get just those posts. It also integrates nicely with email, facebook, evernote, etc.

First it was bloglines, then Pulse, but now I also bookmark my favorites. I do subscribe via email to a few, but end up not liking the clutter in my inbox. I feel a little overwhlmed with so many blog readers and blogs, etc., that I have really pared it down to my top 2-3 for my daily blog fix. (Yours included, of course!) And I use Twitter for the other blogs that I like to look at only now and then.

I use blogs via email. I don't keep up with very many blogs any more. I just don't seem to have the time. I only have two scrapbook type (yours and Debby Schuh) plus one called 365lessthings and Friedokra.

When Feedly said they would bring over my blog list with an easy import I jumped on it and I haven't looked back. It works great but I find myself still going to reader.google.com I'm going to be sad when it's not there anymore!

Like you I'm converting from google reader to Feedly and I'm really really enjoying the design, all the bookmark tools and even a sidebar for a twitter feed! I've got it as an app on my android and as a plugin in Firefox on the computer. Both work great and now I'm just glad to be rid of old boring google reader! :-)

I'm signed up for your new class (through the bundle that was offered) and am Digi- I always figure anything anyone can do in paper, I can do on the computer. And of course concepts always translate. I've always loved your classes and your approach to story telling.

I'm using feedly- started just after they announced google reader was going away. I used a different RSS Reader that synced with Google Reader prior to that on my my ipad and my iphone. I tend to read on either. I have also used Google Reader on the computer at times and am sad to see it go. But, I like feedly so far.

I love having everything in one spot the way an RSS reader does- and the ability to save something for later.

You will totally be able to translate the layout ideas in the class to digital. Planning to include PNG files that can be used either with paper or digi too.

I outgrew the bookmark method years ago and now rely solely on RSS feeds. I have both GoogleReader and Feedly on my Laptop. I use Reader primarily but obviously will be turning to Feedly as my #1 method very soon. As far as the IPad goes, I would highly recommend that you try Perfect RSS. It's been my "go to" for two years. Love it.
