Week In The Life™ 2017 | Wednesday Words + Photos

Every other Wednesday around here is the transition day for Simon and Anna when they head to Chris' house after school for the rest of the week (they are with me for ten days and then with Chris for five). It's a schedule that has worked well for our family overall. This is one of those Wednesdays. The other kids will also be with their Mom from this evening through the weekend and they will all be back here again on Monday after school (they have their own schedule that these days, as a result of everyone working together, often overlaps with our schedule).

I vividly remember how challenging and heartbreaking it was adjusting to this new reality of life without kids all the time. It was so, so hard in the beginning to let them go. Eventually the story evolved and I learned to embrace it for what it was: my reality. Now this time represents an opportunity for me to rest, to work so I have more time available when they are back again, to hang out with Aaron or other friends, to travel, to clean up, or to go to yoga anytime I want.

People make it through things.

Here's a look at how my Wednesday unfolded:

6:52am // The morning pet-feeding rush.

7:02am // Waking up seemed to be a bit more challenging this morning.

7:33am // Miraculous recovery. Ha. Actually it was a pretty okay morning minus the reminders to keep doing what they are supposed to be doing to get ready. Anna has Easter Mass at school today and she's actually wearing the dress I wore when I was baptized + received First Communion. Thanks for saving that Mom.

Silly hugs between the girls before heading off in different directions for the rest of the week.

Isaac + Elliott have been sharing this room since they moved in and they are both looking forward to having their own space. Once they get their morning jobs done they are able to have some screen time before it's time to leave for school.

On Wednesday's, because Simon has a late start, I get to walk Anna into school and to her classroom vs. just dropping her off and continuing on with Simon. It's a fun ritual that we both like and she loves the chance to be exclusively in charge of the music on the way to school.

8:32am // On Wednesday's Simon's late start means I take Anna to school first and then come back to get him. I love that I get some time with each one individually as they start their day (and he loves to sleep in). There's hot cocoa in that mug there and a breakfast sandwich wrapped in the paper towel. Aaron drives the other three to their school and we wave as we pass each other coming + going on the highway.

9:07am // ? by Simon. I might have been singing "Oh Shelia." 80's on 8 (sirius station) forever - Simon's daily station of choice.

9:17am // On Wednesday mornings I have recently been trying to catch a Level One yoga class at my favorite local place after I drop Simon off at school. It has literally taken me years to put myself first in this way - especially during "working hours." I am trying to keep making that choice. Katie has really helped and encouraged me in this area in my life and I will be forever grateful to her for a million different reasons. I love going and I love how I feel both during and after.

The daffodils I bought at Trader Joe's yesterday are fully opened.

Katie's here on Wednesdays. Top knots are not a requirement to work here.

12:12pm // Found some of those chocolates. Ate them after leftovers from Taco Tuesday.

1:10pm // Experimenting with other shots at my desk since I spend lots of time here. The planner I love and use for all my work stuff (family stuff goes onto a digital calendar) is a Get To Work Book

In the middle of a 1.5 hour video conference meeting with our wonderful brand manager Christy from Inked. All kinds of fun things in progress these days.

3:18pm // Back in the pick-up line again waiting for Simon. On Wednesday's (whether they are staying at my house or not) I drive him and a friend to their Minecraft social group that's run by a very awesome local autism organization called Bridgeway House

5:11pm // Getting Simon's stuff back into his room. Aaron spent some time late this afternoon to start moving Simon's stuff back into his room that got new carpet on Monday.

5:49pm // Things get pretty quiet here when all the kids are away. Some times I spend a lot of the time working and some times I spend a lot of time playing and some times it's a mix. Tonight it's dishes and shrimp pasta and watching basketball on TV with Aaron.

And wine.

7:03pm // Went looking for Sam and found him on Anna's top bunk bed.

The rest of the evening Aaron and I sat in bed and watched basketball. A pretty darn good evening. And as I look back through my photos I see that I didn't take any of Aaron today. Putting that on my list for tomorrow.

In the past I've offered a linking widget here to collect links to people who wanted to share their Wednesday post of words + photos. For some reason I can't get it to work again so if you would like to share a link to your WEDNESDAY words and photos please post in the comment section below. Please link directly to your post vs. a general blog link. Thank you!

Love your photos from the office and the joke about the hairstyle ^^ I'm spending a lot of time alone in my studio too and I feel a bit dah as to how to record the workday in a more interesting way. So I made funny faces. But I don't really want to make funny faces. Anyway, my post is here: http://deuxjanvier.eu/2017/04/wednesday-19th-april/ Loving this project so far!!

Great photos, love the people get through things. I remember the anger and fear and heartbreak at being separated from them and then it was cool and then I began to really enjoy it and found a little hobby called scrapbooking :-)

A little bit fewer photos today, but did take a video and think it is a fair representation of our Wednesdays: http://athomewiththerichardsfamily.blogspot.com/2017/04/2017-witl-wednesday.html

I'm loving WITL posts. I look forward to them each day. So much Inspiration. I did have a question though on your process. When you create the WITL album do you predominately use the images & text from your blog? Do you have an idea of how many photos you want for each day to put in your album? Thanks Ali. :)

Hi! Yes - I will literally copy + paste the text from my blog (makes it super easy). Sometimes I print the text on the photos and other times I make a separate journaling page and collect the text all together there. I don't usually use every single photo.

So grateful to be doing this project for the 3rd year and seeing my full whole life reflected back to me. LOVE what you wrote on top about the heartbreaking challenge of adjusting to life without kids all the time and the process evolving over time. So grateful for these truths you share that reflect a deep experience I share, and the reminder that people make it through things. Thank You Ali!

I got all choked up reading the top of your post. I've learned so much about how this project lets you watch time pass as I follow your family. My last three weeks in the life have been: finding out I was pregnant, living with a newborn, and now frantically chasing a one year old around the house. Thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart, for letting us come along with your own week in the life, and encouraging us to capture our own stories of "right now."
