One Little Word® 2018 | Space
My One Little Word® for 2018 is space.
Since 2006 I've been choosing a word to focus on over the course the 12 months from January through December. My past words have included:
- Play
- Peace
- Vitality
- Nurture
- Story
- Light
- Up
- Open
- Thrive
- Give
- Whole
- Connect
For 2018 I'm looking to get curious about the idea of space.
The word "space" has quite a few different meanings, from an interval of time to a continuous area or expanse which is free, available or unoccupied to the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move (outer space) to the freedom and scope to live, think, and develop in a way that suits one.
What I'm interested in inviting into my life this year is some breathing room. I find myself regularly filling things up: time, physical space, projects, etc. I want to see what it feels like to have "room" for thinking and dreaming and learning and moving at a slower pace. I want to pay attention and begin to recognize those times when I'm unconsciously filling up the space and learn to pause before continuing on auto-pilot.
Simply put, what I want to do this year is create more "white space" in my life to pursue what really matters most to me.
Companion words - words that are also speaking to me - this year include: wonder, less, ease, and slow.
I'm really looking forward to experiencing life with this word in 2018.

Love your word Ali! So much depth to it. Can't wait to see it play out in your life.
My word is Spark. I need some spark in my life after feeling burned out for a while. My other word is Grit. It sounds crazy, but I have a feeling both are needed to create the life I want. I feel really inspired to embrace them both. I'm thinking this year I will focus on Spark and next year will focus on Grit. But I have a feeling they are both needed right now. I did this for the past two years with Wild and Free and it was lovely to see them both play out in my life.
Thanks as always for your inspiration!

Love your word Ali! My word is "us". With my husband newly retired and kids grown, I really feel the need to just focus on us. Having the time now to just be together, living our dreams and growing even closer than we already are.

My word is BRAVING. I just finished “Braving the Wilderness” by Brené Brown. I found myself so inspired, so moved, so exhilarated by her words and the meaning & possibilities behind BRAVING, that I truly believe my 2018 OLW found me when I need it the most.

STRENGTH
This year I need to be extra strong.
My husband was recently diagnosed with lung cancer
And my son is starting college in January.
Both are requiring extra support from me
But I know with God on my side I will have the
Strength to handle whatever challenges come my way.

My word is POSE. I am never in front of the camera with my son who is 8 years old and this year I am committed to pose with him for pictures. My favorite pictures from my childhood are those with my mom and I want the same for my son. POSE for my own camera. POSE for other cameras. POSE and be visibly present whether intentionally or candid and to be in the memories the photographs preserve.
