December Daily® 2016 | Day 03

Welcome to  December Daily® 2016 | Day 03.

For my story today I went with a little something different - following an idea that came about as I was starting to type up my story in Photoshop. Originally I thought I would just make a column with the "embrace the mess" title at the top and my journaling below in a narrow text column. As I was in the process of writing up my story I wondered about creating some kind of interactive element (since i was already working outside a page protector) that would lift up to reveal the journaling underneath.

I've included the "embrace the mess" as a free word art download for you in case it might help you get a story told this season (or anytime) as well.

As a reminder, here's what Day 03 looked like as a foundation page:

Here's a look at what Day 03 turned out looking like:

Even though I decided to go with a full color background you could totally do this same technique with a photo.

The video below will walk you through my process. I printed my story on  Epson Matte Presentation Paper and adhered it to the back of the photo from Day 02. The "embrace the mess" was printed on Epson Glossy Photo Paper to give it a little extra stability and well, gloss. Both were printed using the Canon Pixma MG7720. I used a craft knife to cut out the flap after using a ruler to measure a safe space that would reveal the journaling below. Along the bottom I added an  Avery Index Tab with the sentiment "the reality of the season" (from this set) stamped on the white paper inside.

You'll also notice that I cut my 4-pocket page protector down to a 2-pocket page protector and added another tab along the outside edge.

When you lift up the flap my story for the day is revealed. Font is  Remington Noiseless

Underneath the flap I added a pattern paper from the Main Kit and a gold star that didn't make it into the photograph.

DAY 03 | JOURNALING

As I walked around the house today (and basically lots of previous days) this has been my message to myself, “embrace the mess.” Sometimes it’s whispered and other times it’s quite a bit louder. The “mess” around here right now is a physical mess. It’s a combination of Aaron & kids moving in this past summer and the resulting current state of construction (in the garage and upstairs). The end result is going to be awesome and eventually everything will have a place and we will all feel more settled. But right now, especially right now for the holidays, I’m having a bit of a challenge embracing the current mess. Lots of deep breaths. Lots of self-reminders that this is the current season and not forever. Note To Self: Focus on what’s most important, adjust your expectations and don’t let the beauty in the mess pass you by.

Here's a look at the spread outside of the album:

Oh I can't believe how much this resonates with me!!! At this time each year I prepare my home and garden for my daughter's birthday party. And like every year I am confronted by so much MESS!! It's really stressful. I have a great ability to embrace the mess when it's behind closed doors. In fact I'm thinking I may need to simply close some doors to reduce my workload! Anyway thanks heaps Ali for the digital word art - I will be using it more than once for sure!

This is going to resonate with so many of us, Ali. My basement has been turned upside down and I hate going down there. It is temporary, though. "To everything, turn, turn, turn. There is a season, turn, turn turn."

It's funny and ironic that "embrace the mess" was the story you documented today, because I was just talking to my therapist about doing just that this season. Our mess is physical and emotional. Piles of papers here and there as we get closer to going through another IVF process before end of the year. And realizing that it's okay and our place is not always going to be immaculate. And the emotions of the holiday and everything were doing, and who is missing as we move through each day of the holiday.
Even though I'm not doing a DD at this very moment, I have been following along with your posts and writing down journaling each day. Thank you for sharing this one, especially, and for the word art!

Ali - you blow my mind when when you're not super anal (like me) about using exact measurements or having to use a paper trimmer each time you cut and just bust out your scissors. I love that about you! And I can totally relate to "Embrace the mess" - that is where we are at right now and I'm totally going to use this idea in my DD. Thank you so much for the word art, the inspiration AND for always keeping it real.

So cool! Just curious about the colored paper you used for the flap. Is that in the main kit?

I know this may be a dumb question but I'm completely stumped. I loved this idea so I added it to my DD. I was able to change the color to red to match better but I for the life of me can't figure out how to get the text smaller in photoshop. I just wanted it to be smaller so I can add photos to the bottom half.
