31 Things Begins Next Week

My new 4-week workshop, 31 Things, begins next Thursday at Big Picture Classes.

Here’s a few more details about this class for those of you that might be thinking about signing up (or for those of you who are reading about it for the first time today):

This is not a class where you’ll be documenting what you do each day for 31 days.

This is a class where you are invited, via daily prompts, to tell 31 stories from your life. Some people will tell stories from today. Some will tell stories from the past. And some will tell stories that combine the two together. Some stories will be serious. Some will be silly. Some might will be hard and others easy.

This is a class that will stretch your writing muscles and encourage you to tell your stories in more detail and depth.

This is a class that focuses on topics/themes you might dismiss when you are thinking about which stories to scrapbook/write about your life. Examples of some of the topics/themes include jewelry, technology, listen, shoes, carry, spirit, outside, covet.

This is a class that would be appropriate for anyone who is interested in writing stories about their life, even if you don’t consider yourself a scrapbooker.

This is a class for every kind of memory keeper (paper, digital, art journalers, writers, bloggers, etc because it’s really all about the writing).

Class begins on Thursday, May 17th and runs through June 16th. All the daily emails will be archived in the classroom at Big Picture – there will also be a message board and gallery for sharing your work and being a part of the class community.

As with all Big Picture workshops you have complete access to the classroom and the archives after the live class is over.

When you sign up there’s a video waiting for you with more details along with layered templates for Photoshop users and Word journaling templates for those that might not use Photoshop.

Registration closes May 23.

You’re invited. Learn more and sign up here.

I can’t wait Ali. I’m ready to document. So excited about this class. One of the first I’ve found that will not be overwhelming to me in the short time we have together. Thanks so much for creating this class. I can see my album growing huge from it with my own words.

I can’t wait to get started… in fact I did start printing all the page stripes and now I’m thinking what kind of paper and stuff I’m going to use :-) – that makes me happy!

I signed up for it last night! Years and years ago, I used to LOVE to write… and then, with my career path and eventually becoming a busy SAHM of 2, I rarely write at all. This class is a birthday present… to myself!

I signed up weeks ago! Can’t wait for this class! I’ve always loved writing and when I was a kid I would write page after page about anything. I’ve always said one day I WILL write a book! Sadly, as an adult with three little ones, life leaves little room for me to just sit and write. I need this to refresh my skills and thoughts and I think you are so great at getting your thoughts and feelings down on the page, Ali. Thanks for this class!

Hello Ali, just wondering if you’ll be sharing some of your layouts for this class. I love how you tell your stories and would love to see some of your ideas for this project.

      Ali said…

Hi Danielle – I’m just sharing the image above that shows some of the layouts all together. Seeing the layouts and reading the content is part of being a student in the class (especially since it’s much more about the words vs. the actual look of the layouts).

I’ll be in Europe during most of the “live” time for this class. What will I miss?

      Ali said…

There will be a chat and you’ll just miss any live interaction on the message boards. The daily prompts will come to you via email so if you’ll have internet access available you’ll be able to access the prompts.

I CAN HARDLY WAIT! A CLASS FOCUSED ON JOURNALING FIRST! HOW MANY MORE MINUTES UNTIL MAY 17TH? YAY!

Thanks so much, Ali, for coming up with this class. I love photos, products, and the whole world of scrap/altered stuff. But story is my very first love and this is a great time for me to dig deeply to write. I am 60 years old and am as excited as a kid in a candy shop!

    Enjoy your weekend!

Thanks,Ali for the expalanation. I signed up for class not sure what to expect, but I love how this sounds. It’s as if you took ‘one little word’ and made it a ‘daily word’. I like this concept. A different word to focus on each day. Yes, I like this, cant’ wait to start class.

Hi Ana – make sure to watch the video in the classroom before next week. You’ll feel better prepared as we start on the adventure :) .

Ali, This is a great writing exercise. (Especially for me as I struggle with it)

I encourage all of you to wade, or jump right in!

Feel free to read my first page.

My hope is that it will encourage you, maybe it will make you smile, maybe it will spark some memories for you that will unravel some great stories and help you in the process of your own inner stories for your 31 Things.

I look forward to seeing any that are willing to share.

Most of all – Have fun in your journaling journey!

    Thanks for hosting this Ali.

Wasn’t sure where to post this but I wanted to thank you for the lovely newsletter that you send out. I followed your advice and read the speech by Patti and loved it!! Lucky you to have found her and she find you. I will take her advice to heart as I believe it not only applies to the graduate audience but to all who lived on this earth! Thanks for the uplifting read and it’s funny that sometimes
when you have nothing to say, you say the most of all!!
    Happy Mother’s Day!!

    Ali,

I am a little stockpiled on classes/albums that I’m behind on, but I am also the type that doesn’t mind this, I like to grab the opportunity while it’s there, knowing that sooner or later I will do it! So…if I sign up now but don’t start for a few months, will everything be waiting in place for me? And regarding the chats/message boards etc..will that all be saved too? It sounds like such an awesome class!!!!

    • ….
      Ali said…

Hi Nell – yes, everything will be archived in the classroom and the message boards remain open as well – I just won’t be there in a committed fashion like I will be during the actual four weeks of the class.

I am deferring this class a little too – I am having surgery on May 29 and have a month off work to recuperate. My plan is to complete the 31 Days class during my time off. I was a little worried about filling in my time as I will be restricted in what I can physically do, so when I saw this class advertised I knew it was meant to be :) Can’t wait to get into it!

I am so excited about this. I really want to work in my writing skills. Watched the video and love the templates, but I think I am going to use my smash book to hold my finished stories. I got it as a gift for Christmas and have not known exactly what to do with it and think this may be the perfect project. Can’t wait until Thursdays email!

    Also…happy mother’s day to you!

There’s no plans at this time to re-run it. When I did Yesterday & Today we re-ran it again 2 years later. Honestly not sure what will be the plan with this one – maybe next year?

I have been on the fence about taking this class even though it sounds awesome. I am a scrapbooker but have never considered myself a good story teller. My layouts always have the basics in a few sentences but I always have a problem really delving into my feelings to tell stories. Will that hamper my ability to complete these layouts?

    • ….
      Valerie said…

Hi Laura! You don’t have to be a good story teller to do this; just remember that anything you jot down will be treasured by family in the future — anything!

    • ….
      Ali said…

Hi Laura – this class is all about telling the stories – much more about that then the layouts themselves. If you are interested in writing more – and the encouragement to do so – then this class is for you. It’s not easy for lots of people to tell stories – it takes practice and a willingness to make it happen – you can do it :) .
