Domesticity.

Feeling very domestic today. Even wearing my apron.

Visited my doctor again and scheduled my iodine uptake scan for the end of August. They will be checking to see what's up with my enlarged thyroid: figuring out what to do next (remove part or all of it or just wait and continue to measure it) and assessing whether the nodules are cancerous.

For the scan to see my thyroid correctly I get to go on a special low-iodine diet before testing (from today through up until the day of the test).

Things I can eat: fruits, fresh meats & poultry, and some vegetables (no broccoli, spinach, or turnip greens) and no more than 2 cups of dairy products per day. There are a bunch of things that are spelled out that I can't eat - focusing on what I can. Had to laugh to myself as I walked out of the office thinking this is what I should be eating anyway - nothing like doctor's orders and diagnosed health-issue to get me going in the right direction.

Basically it means that I am going to have to put a bit (understatement) more effort into preparing our meals around here. This can be nothing but a good thing for all of us. I have already become certifiably addicted to our local farmer's market so we are set on that front. It's a darn good time of year to have to rely on fresh fruits and vegetables - picked up local cantaloupe, carrots, tomatoes, and butter lettuce today.

To start off on the right foot I roasted a chicken this afternoon and chopped up a bunch of vegetables for easy snack access. Can't remember the last time I roasted a whole chicken. Planning to have some for dinner tonight and use the rest for salads later this week.

To make my day of domesticity complete I received a fabric order in the mail. I am going to sew myself a skirt (for real Mom). Now that should be an interesting adventure.

And the photo today? Mint tea (simply a mint leaf + hot water) - something I picked up while visiting with Florence in Amsterdam last year.

Thinking good thoughts for your test next month. When I was first diagnosed with my Hashimoto's disease, they found 2 nodules on my thyroid. They were determined to be non-cancerous, but still needed to be checked occasionally. My last scan earlier this year, they were gone entirely. Wahoo! Keep the faith, enjoy all the fresh summer goodness, and looking forward to seeing that skirt.

Wishing you the best of luck with the scan. Sadly, they're a very boring process. I always wished someone could hold up a book for me while my head was turned to each side for what seemed like an eternity! I have what is called a "hot" nodule (the good kind to have), and am going in soon to get my regular bloodwork to see if anything is out of normal ranges.

My mom had the same operation last summer and did great afterwards. There was no cancer. Hope and pray you have the same experience with recovery and all!

Ali - You should post your new diet to your website. I am sure there are many of us that are curious on what you can and cannot eat. The positive thing is the healthier diet. I'm curious because I've never been able to lose the weight that I gained because of my thyroid. My doctor says it should fall off of me, but it doesn't.

I'm making this skirt too (http://lisacohen.typepad.com/my_weblog/2007/06/some_fabric_for.html)! I still have to go and get a few more things from the local fabric store... like the zipper... but I have all the fabric! My sewing machine has been sending me subliminal messages lately I think. LOL! ;-) And I'm with ya on trying to eat better... I'm going for the more seasonal approach.. trying is the operative word... checking out books from the library that focus on this since they tend to be rich in vegetables and fruits and preparing them in simple and delicious ways (can you say simple herb sauces from the garden?!). Let us know how you're doing on this path and if you find any yummy recipes along the way. I'm always looking for new ones to make!
Good luck at the doctors - I'll be thinking and praying for you that everything turns out alright.

I was just on the low iodine diet about two weeks ago and I was miserable on it. However, I am very picky and don't really like most fruits and vegetables :o) Also, I wasn't really prepared for the work or had the time that went into being on the diet. I was only on it for 1 week and lost 3 pounds. Sounds like you'll be ok since you like the fresh fruits & vegies, so I'm sure you'll do great on it! Good luck with everything.

Fabric, fun! Here's a cool (but expensive) site for really cute Japanese fabrics:
    www.superbuzzy.com
The site is U.S. so shipping is fair, but the fabric is imported so it's pricey. Still, super-cute stuff.

Ali - I've been following your blog for a long time now but I don't think I've ever posted. I just wanted to tell you that I just went through all this thyroid stuff early this year (and found it quite by accident also!). After several scans and a biopsy the doctors thought they were dealing with cancer. (And, thyroid cancer is one of the very easiest cancers to treat thankfully!) I had surgery in February and I was fortunate that the pathology came back benign after all. The surgery was extremely easy and I was back at work 2 days later. I was amazed with how simple the whole thing was.
Everything will be just fine! I'll be thinking about you!
