Freedom Writers

Have you seen this movie?

Watched it tonight. An overwhelmingly powerful true story about teaching and racial issues and education and books and believing in yourself and hope and making a difference and telling your story.

I have watched this movie. I thought it was one of the best movies I had seen in a long time. It was soo nice to see a teacher with that kind of drive and commitment to her students (PLEASE, teachers out there DON'T take that wrong). VERY ADMIRABLE!

that's so funny, i also watched it for the first time tonight. there are a lot of movies like it, but somehow this one was especially powerful. i keep thinking about the line "gifted with a burden." hooray for passion! hooray for being the change!

Very powerful. I'm reading Freedom Writers' Diary aloud (with serious editing!) to my English as Second Language students. I hope they will not only recognize themselves in the characters, but also the fact that they can make a difference. At some point, I want to show them the movie in class as well.

Hi Ali, I have been reading your blog for a while now, but have failed to comment. I found it thru Nicole Barczak.
We watched Freedom Writers last night, too. I loved it. It was a very powerful movie. Hillary Swank did an amazing job. I was a little bummed she separated from her husband though.
    Have a great day. Leslie

Amazing Movie! I watched it a few months ago and WOW - I teared up more than once. After seeing it, I suddenly was seeing something on Anne Frank EVERYWHERE - even on Lisa Bearnson's blog. Very touching eye opener - a nice reminder for myself to see things a bit differently and I too was a little bumbed at Dr McDreamy's character.

Freedom Writers is an amazing movie and an even more inspiring story. I've been recommending it to everyone I know who hasn't yet seen it. And it's definitely a movie I will be watching again.

Yes! Most excellent film. Love the whole concept that as an individual you have control of your own stories and through journalling you can make anything happen.
The depiction of the boyfriend character, while disspointing, is very real. Very inspiring story of standing up for what you believe and bucking the system, not taking no for an answer when it matters most.

Loved the story. A friend of mine graduated from the high school where the movie takes place. The valedictorian of her class took two different buses to get to school everyday and never missed a day of school all four years. Kinda really cool.

I saw this movie a few months ago. I was in awe of this brave, brave woman. Of this person who could give so much of herself, who devoted herself to helping these kids see there was a better way in life, to help them understand and break out of their destructive cycle. And she did it all in the face of personal and professional adversity. The story stayed with me for days afterwards.

Loved Hilary Swanks character, so brave and confident. I pretty much love anything with a little Patrick Dempsey, but he was not his usual self in this one. :( Without giving the movie away, I will quit here. Great movie though.. :)

And it's so funny you blogged about it, because it made me think of you...I remember thinking that had you been a teacher, you would have been that kind of teacher...so inspiring like you!

I haven't seen this movie but thought it looked good when the theatrical trailer came out. I don't know why I haven't rented it yet. That and 'The Pursuit of Happyness'. I guess I should rent them on the long weekend coming up, eh?
